Testing Theories Of Behavior With Scripture, Stephen L. Brower
Testing Theories Of Behavior With Scripture, Stephen L. Brower
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
This paper suggests procedures for testing behavioral theory with scripture. A theory of self-betrayal (Warner, et. al., 1979) is examined against the series of self-betrayal "strategies" Cain used to avoid the consequences of killing his brother Abel. The theory fits and explains well the behavior of Cain. A second example of testing theory with scripture deals with guidelines for assessing fundamental assumptions upon which theories of behavior are constructed.
Vegetation And Soil Factors In The Relation To Slope Position On Foothill Knolls In The Uinta Basin Of Utah, Miles O. Moretti, Jack D. Brotherson
Vegetation And Soil Factors In The Relation To Slope Position On Foothill Knolls In The Uinta Basin Of Utah, Miles O. Moretti, Jack D. Brotherson
Great Basin Naturalist
Vegetation and soil differences with respect to slope position were studied on foothill knolls in the Uinta Basin of Utah. Plant communities on windswept ridges (top of slope) exhibited several unique characteristics when compared to the other slope communities. These communities at the top and base of slopes were sufficiently different in respect to plant life form composition, plant cover, wind-adapted growth forms, and percent exposed rock that they should be considered separate community types. Mineral concentrations in plant tissue and soil samples declined downslope in some cases and increased in others. Diversity decreased downslope as shrubs became dominant over …

First Record Of Pygmy Rabbits (Brachylagus Idahoensis) In Wyoming, Thomas M. Campbell Iii, Tim W. Clark, Craig R. Groves
Great Basin Naturalist
Pygmy rabbits are reported for the first time in southwestern Wyoming. The range for this species is thus extended 240 km and 145 km from the nearest records in Idaho and Utah, respectively.
The Relation Between Species Numbers And Island Characteristics For Habitat Islands In A Volcanic Landscape, Steven H. Carter-Lovejoy
The Relation Between Species Numbers And Island Characteristics For Habitat Islands In A Volcanic Landscape, Steven H. Carter-Lovejoy
Great Basin Naturalist
Within the Craters of the Moon Lava Flow in southeastern Idaho are kipukas, islands of sagebrush habitat isolated by relatively barren lava. In 1979 I counted the number of species of plants, small mammals, and reptiles for a series of kipukas. The degree of isolation of a kipuka was not related to numbers of species found there; thus, these data do not support the equilibrium theory of island biogeography. For most of the study organisms lava is not a significant barrier to dispersal. Larger kipukas support larger numbers of species. For plants this relationship likely is a result of the …
The Prevalence Of Echinococcus Granulosus And Other Taeniid Cestodes In Sheep Dogs Of Central Utah, Lauritz A. Jensen, Ferron L. Andersen, Peter M. Schantz
The Prevalence Of Echinococcus Granulosus And Other Taeniid Cestodes In Sheep Dogs Of Central Utah, Lauritz A. Jensen, Ferron L. Andersen, Peter M. Schantz
Great Basin Naturalist
Fifty-one of 62 sheep dogs in central Utah were successfully purged for diagnosis of cestodes in 1981. Tapeworms were identified in the purged fecal samples of 33 (64.7 percent) animals. Minimum infection rates in the dogs which were purged were: 9.8 percent for Echinococcus granulosus, 29.4 percent for Taenia pisiformis, 27.5 percent for T. ovis krabbei, 27.5 percent for T. hydatigena, and 2.0 percent for T. serialis. The prevalence of E. granulosus decreased from 27 percent in 1971 to 9.8 percent in 1981.
Growth Of Juvenile American Lobsters In Semiopen And Closed Culture Systems Using Formulated Diets, S. R. Wadley, R. A. Heckmann, R. C. Infanger, R. W. Mickelsen
Growth Of Juvenile American Lobsters In Semiopen And Closed Culture Systems Using Formulated Diets, S. R. Wadley, R. A. Heckmann, R. C. Infanger, R. W. Mickelsen
Great Basin Naturalist
Growth of juvenile American lobsters, Homarus americanus, raised in four semiopen culture systems, with daily water exchange rates ranging from 29 percent to 3.3 percent, was compared with growth in a completely closed system. Animals were fed a formulated pelleted ration, water quality factors were measured daily, and changes in concentration of nitrate, orthophosphate, and total organic carbon were monitored. Results of two 90-day trials indicate that growth increased in the system with the lower water exchange rates. Maximum growth occurred in the closed system.

Acquisition Of The Mitsui Collection By The East Asiatic Library, University Of California, Berkeley, Roger Sherman
Acquisition Of The Mitsui Collection By The East Asiatic Library, University Of California, Berkeley, Roger Sherman
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Not long after World War II came to a close, there was a burgeoning of interest in area studies, which prompted many academic libraries in the United States to embark on extensive acquisitions programs to obtain foreign books for their universities. At the Berkeley campus of the University of California, it was recognized that there was a need on the West Coast for a strong collection of East Asian research materials. This led to the establishment of the East Asiatic Library (EAL) in 1947 as a separate branch on campus. The first few years at the Library were a period …
The Zodiac Man In Medieval Medical Astrology, Charles Clark
The Zodiac Man In Medieval Medical Astrology, Charles Clark
Quidditas
A naked male figure was a familiar illustration in many medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. Standing with his legs and arms slightly spread, the twelve images or names of the zodiac were superimposed on his body, from his head (Aries) to his feet (Pisces). Used as a quick reference by physicians, barber-surgeons, and even laymen, the figure indicated the part of the body which was "ruled" by a specific sign of the zodiac. Once the correct sign was determined for the particular part of the body, the proper time for surgery, bloodletting, administration of medication, or even the cutting of hair …
Observations On Pulci's Reworking Of The Anonymous Orlando, Madison U. Sowell
Observations On Pulci's Reworking Of The Anonymous Orlando, Madison U. Sowell
Quidditas
As a preface to the observations which follow on Luigi Pulci's treatment of the anonymous Orlando in the composition of his chief work, Il Morgante, it should be noted that in the past four decades several scholars in Italy have published significant books on Pulci's chivalric poem. Giovanni Getto published the first edition of his renowned Studio sul "Morgante" in 1944; Gaetano Mariani produced his long comparative essay on Il Morgante e i cantari trecenteschi in 1958; in 1967, the year of the second edition of Getto's study, Angelo Gianni gave us his interpretation of the Morgante's two …

Vegetable Love: Metamorphosis And Morality In Hesperides, Frances M. Malpezzi
Vegetable Love: Metamorphosis And Morality In Hesperides, Frances M. Malpezzi
Quidditas
Recent critics of Hesperides, less content than their predecessors with the plucking of but one of Herrick's golden apples, the examination of its beauty, and the savoring of its sweetness, have attempted the task of surveying the landscape of the entire garden, elucidating the pattern of its design, and identifying the various species of plants growing therein. The emphasis now is on seeing Hesperides as an integrated and thematically unified construct. The studies by Whitaker, Chambers, Deming, Rollin, and DeNeef are concerned with the ceremonial mode that pervades the poems in Hesperides. The consensus of these writers is …
Peter Lassen: Danish Pioneer Of California, Franklin D. Scott
Peter Lassen: Danish Pioneer Of California, Franklin D. Scott
The Bridge
"The Dane Peter Lassen," or " Peter Lassen, a Danish Blacksmith," appears in almost every memoir dealing with early northern California. His Danishness was obvious, though no one bothers to explain why. Was his speech the telltale feature? The man was almost thirty years of age when he left Denmark, and he had had no opportunity to learn English while his tongue was ductile. He came to California in the spring of 1840, at the beginning of a decade of decision. At that moment Indians inhabited the land, Russians were still established on the California coast, Mexicans held title to …

The Bridge
A jackrabbit was sunning himself on a rock in the warm March sun, stretched out and went to sleep. Suddenly a noise awakened him and he jumped quickly away at right angles to where the noise had originated. From a safe distance he stopped, sat up to see what had disturbed his siesta, wiggling his ears and nose as he watched another of those strange creatures going by his sunning rock. What were they? They had been passing in increasing numbers, and had actually made parallel tracks right by his rock!
Danish Farmers In The Middle West, Erik Helmer Pedersen
Danish Farmers In The Middle West, Erik Helmer Pedersen
The Bridge
A former Danish carpenter and farmer, Niels Madsen, his wife, Anna, and their six children, aged 15 to 3 years, were among the passengers on board the America wooden paddle-steamer "Northern Light" when the ship on May 1, 1869, left Copenhagen. It was bound for New York, but enroute it had to call at Gothenburg in Sweden and Christiana in Norway. The Madsen family had left their native village of Klippinge at Stevns, in the company of about 30 other emigrants, headed by a so-called "yankee," Mr. A. Clausen, who during the spring of 1869 had formed an emigration group. …
A Sampler, Carl Hansen
A Sampler, Carl Hansen
The Bridge
Note: Seventy years after his death the Danish-born writer Carl Hansen (1860-1916) remains, among those who read Danish, a highly valued interpreter of the immigrant experience in the United States. Hansen was the subject of two articles in earlier issue (Vol. 2:1, 1979) of The Bridge. His short stories and one novel are together a landmark in the American literature written in Danish , but the books have become inaccessible to many and, as to language, closed to a large audience who would appreciate his ability to sketch Danish-American personalities and lives. In Tyler, Minnesota, where he lived until 1910, …
Four Utah Mormon Artists As Authors, Roxie Dale Trimble
Four Utah Mormon Artists As Authors, Roxie Dale Trimble
Theses and Dissertations
In researching the literary and visual art forms of four Utah Mormon artists/authors, considerable evidence supports the prognosis that natural parallels do exist between the written and visual works of artists/authors. Recent as well as past historical data also confirms this hypothesis.
To implement research personal interviews and written questionnaires were submitted. The resultant data compiled supports the prognosis that this parallelism does exist.

Demonic Patterns In Tasso And Spenser, John Mulryan
Demonic Patterns In Tasso And Spenser, John Mulryan
Quidditas
The term "demon" has embraced a variety of meanings over the centuries, and, while it can include the notion of one's own inner genius, or of a sprite midway between the gods and men, it is usually construed as an evil spirit, as Augustine said long ago:
... there is scarcely a man, no matter how well read and learned, whoo would dare say by way of praise to his slave, You have a demon, or who could doubt that the man to whom he said this would consider it a curse? Why, then, are we to subject ourselves to …
