You Want To Know About This One Here? Where The Mormons Go, Curtis Wade Bentley

The mortuary seemed to keep the town alive. Always stately and freshly painted. It looked like one of those plantation houses from Gone with the Wind. Like a place where lots of well-off men come on a Saturday afternoon to hold tall, cold glasses and toast tall, cold women in white. It even had a gazebo-type thing out in the middle of a lot of grass where a band ought to play something lively. Of course it wasn't that kind of place. The mortuary was a kind of mirage that way. But then, I didn't know anyone who would have …

Gastronomy And Sexuality: "Table Language" In The Heptaméron, Colette H. Winn Jan 1986

Gastronomy And Sexuality: "Table Language" In The Heptaméron, Colette H. Winn

Quidditas

In his penetrating study on Marguerite de Navarre, Themes, Language and Structure, Marcel Tetel calls attention to the metaphoric usage of food in the Heptaméron. Critics, to date, have failed to pursue this line of inquiry. Readers accustomed to Rabelais's elaborate gastronomic depictions may be disappointed by the extreme sobriety of corresponding scenes in the Hemptaméron. Marguerite eschews the picturesque description of a generously laden table, the exuberance associated with this traditionally jovial event and the gigantism required by the Gargantuan legend in favor of briefer and often less colorful table encounters. Yet relegating these scenes to …

Judicial Prosecution Of Prisoners For Lds Plural Marriage: Prison Sentences, 1884-1895, Rosa Mae Mcclellan Evans Jan 1986

Judicial Prosecution Of Prisoners For Lds Plural Marriage: Prison Sentences, 1884-1895, Rosa Mae Mcclellan Evans

Theses and Dissertations

The practice of polygamy among the Mormons during the nineteenth century was vigorously prosecuted by the federal government in response to the demands of those whose political and economic goals could best be served through exploitation of the national attitude toward polygamy. Hundreds of men served prison terms for practicing what they believed was their religious obligation. This study of the sentences from the prison admission records has focused on the comparative severity of the judges, examines age as an influencing factor in sentencing, and compares the sentences of the polygamists with those for crimes against person and property.

My Ivy League Education, An Autobiography: 1967-71, Wayne Taylor

I was seven years old, leaving what I thought was Eden for the northeastern United States. The jungle, our backyard, a tangled and mysterious playground filled with loud birds, lizards , and an occasional snake, fell away in the noise and rush of Managua and the scream of propellers. Nicaragua slipped into memory: hunting iguana on hot Sunday afternoons, the warm chatter of rain on our tin roof, and volcanoes to the south and west, smoking redly through the nights. Left behind was the string hammock woven with bright red and green designs in which my sister and I had …

The Family Historian, G. Wesley Johnson Jr. Jan 1986

The Family Historian, G. Wesley Johnson Jr.

Faculty Publications

The archivist of a great university library was once asked his secret in collecting so many important materials. He smiled and said, "My success can be summed up in two very important words: vacuum sweeper." His approach was to locate as many relevant materials as possible and then to analyze and classify them. His success was linked to having a wide definition of what records might be of value for historical archives. Where others threw away phone books, he kept them (valuable information on professions and businesses in the Yellow Pages), where others threw away menus, he kept them (valuable …

A Burkean Logological Analysis Of Doctrine And Covenants Section 88, Joann Farias Jan 1986

A Burkean Logological Analysis Of Doctrine And Covenants Section 88, Joann Farias

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis applies Kenneth Burke's method of logology as exemplified in The Rhetoric of Religion to analyze the Mormon text Doctrine and Covenants Section 88. This method of logology is based on the assumption that what is said about God in theology reveals a religion's use of language to influence human motives. The logological method uses six analogies to discover the motives implicit in religious terminologies. These six analogies are as follows: words-Word, Matter-Spirit, the Negative, the Titular, Time-Eternity, and the Formal.

This study revealed that the terminology contained in Doctrine and Covenants uses motives far diferent from the motives …

Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen Jan 1986

Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces the origin, development, and decline, from 1852 to 1904, of Salt Lake County's judicial precincts. A precinct functioned as the basic subdivision of county government. Its boundaries were generally coterminous with those of local communities. It was established to allow for a degree of local control by the people.
Chapter two reveals that precinct justices experienced over time a marked decline in socio-political prominence. This is largely due to legislative statutes that decreased their jurisdictional powers. Chapter three examines the evolution of precinct boundaries. It is demonstrated that geographic distribution of individuals played a major role in …

From Babylon To Zion: The Life Of William Mclachlan, A British Convert To The Mormon Church, Winifred Morse Mclachlan

Theses and Dissertations

William McLachlan, a Scotsman, was converted to the L. D. S. Church, in Braintree, Essex, England in 1859. The motivating factor in his life was his faith that Joseph Smith was a prophet to whom the Lord had restored the precepts of the original Christian church. His journals, his letters, his speeches, his life, were oriented toward one ultimate goal, to build the Kingdom of God and to gain a place for himself and his family in that kingdom.
This thesis is a biography of his life and examines his emigration to Zion, his settlement and adjustment to the frontier, …

Marcellus Palingenius' Zodiacus Vitae in twelve books (Venice [1535?]) was exceedingly popular in Reformation Europe. In nearly 10,000 lines of Latin hexameters

are conteined twelue seuerall labours, painting out moste liuely, the whole compasse of the world, the reformation of manners, the miseries of mankinde, the pathway to vertue and vice, the eternitie of the Soule, the course of the Heavens, the mysteries of nature, and diuers other circumstances of great learning, and no lesse judgement,

as Barnabe Googe summarized it on the title page of his translation in 1576. The ZV saw over sixty editions as well as translations …

A Moral Voice For The Restoration Lady: A Comparative View Of Allestree And Vives, John A. Thomas

Quidditas

Following the civil strife of the 1640s and the Interregnum of the 1650s, Anglican England felt the necessity of spiritual housecleaning to tighten its hold on the godly and to ferret out dissenting influences. Evidence of renewed authoritarianism is seen in Richard Allestree's early appointment in the 1660s as a lecturer for the city of Oxford, where his task was to establish the faith and to root out schismatical opinions propagated by "false" teachers of the Interregnum. In 1662 Charles was to pass measures, albeit reluctantly, requiring strict conformity concerning practices in the church not unlike those enforced by Laud. …

Cousin Laman In The Wilderness: The Beginnings Of Brigham Young's Indian Policy, Richard E. Bennett

Faculty Publications

Historians of the American West have observed that compared with most other mid-19th century American overlanders, whether Oregon-bound farmers or California Agronauts, the Mormons enjoyed a relatively more amicable, more peaceful relationship with the American Indian. Furthermore several contend with cause that Brigham Young was the principal architect of peace with the Ute, Shoshoni, Navaho, Hopi, and other tribes in the deserts and valleys of "Deseret," the Mormon Zion in the Great Basin Kingdom. Leonard Arrington, Davis Bitton, James Allen, and other modern writers have argued that Young pursued a conciliatory (if not self protective and condescending) policy toward the …

Uncompahgre Dinosaur Fauna: A Preliminary Report, James A. Jensen Oct 1985

Uncompahgre Dinosaur Fauna: A Preliminary Report, James A. Jensen

Great Basin Naturalist

A diverse late Jurassic dinosaur fauna, discovered in western Colorado in 1963, contains many undescribed taxa that may represent evolutionary trends at the generic level not previously reported from the Morrison Formation. A preliminary faunal list is given. Bones of the largest known dinosaur, Ultrasaurus, are present as are a variety of small animals, including Pterosaurs, in which one sacrum displays avianlike fused sacral neural spines. A new family, the Torvosauridae, erected, based on the genus Torvosaurus that is redescribed.

Sexual Selection And Mating System Variation In Anuran Amphibians Of The Arizona–Sonoran Desert, Brian K. Sullivan Oct 1985

Sexual Selection And Mating System Variation In Anuran Amphibians Of The Arizona–Sonoran Desert, Brian K. Sullivan

Great Basin Naturalist

Mating system variation in anuran amphibians of the Arizona-Sonoran Desert was reviewed. Male density and breeding period duration were negatively correlated in seven bufonids and pelobatids. Variation in male mating behavior and ability of females to freely select their mates unhindered by active-searching males also was related directly to male density. These observations support hypotheses relating ecological factors to mating system organization. It is suggested that male calling behavior, and anuran lek mating systems in general, may be significantly influenced by predation on vocalizing males.

Three New Sauropod Dinosaurs From The Upper Jurassic Of Colorado, James A. Jensen Oct 1985

Three New Sauropod Dinosaurs From The Upper Jurassic Of Colorado, James A. Jensen

Great Basin Naturalist

From 1972 to 1982 three exceptionally large sauropod scapulocoracoids and other equally large sauropod bones were collected from the base of the Brushy Basin Member of the Upper Jurassic, Morrison Formation, in western Colorado. Two of the scapulae are conspecific, but the third represents a second genus and possibly a new family. The two conspecific specimens are described here as: Supersaurus vivianae; the second genus is described as Ultrasaurus mcintoshi, and a large, robust anterior dorsal vertebra of unique form is described as Dystylosaurus edwini. Various miscellaneous elements are referred to the three genera.

Thermal Ecology And Activity Patterns Of The Short-Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma Douglassi) And The Sagebrush Lizard (Sceloporus Graciosus) In Southeastern Idaho, Craig Guyer, Allan D. Linder Oct 1985

Thermal Ecology And Activity Patterns Of The Short-Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma Douglassi) And The Sagebrush Lizard (Sceloporus Graciosus) In Southeastern Idaho, Craig Guyer, Allan D. Linder

Great Basin Naturalist

A mark-recapture study of the short-horned lizard (Phrynosoma douglassi) and the sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus graciosus) was performed from 1976 to 1977 in southeastern Idaho. Both species had mean cloacal temperatures of approximately 33 C. However, P. douglassi had more variable cloacal temperatures, particularly during morning and evening periods. This was caused by differences in sleeping sites chosen by the two species. Adults of both species were active from mid-April through late August, with peak activity in June. Juvenile P. douglassi displayed a seasonal activity pattern similar to that of adults. Juvenile S. graciosus were most active …

Life History Of The Cui-Ui, Chasmistes Cujus Cope, In Pyramid Lake, Nevada: A Review, William F. Sigler, Steven Vigg, Mimi Bres Oct 1985

Life History Of The Cui-Ui, Chasmistes Cujus Cope, In Pyramid Lake, Nevada: A Review, William F. Sigler, Steven Vigg, Mimi Bres

Great Basin Naturalist

The cui-ui, Chasmistes cujus Cope, a member of the sucker family and endemic to Pyramid Lake, Nevada, is listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Cui-ui was once a major source of sustenance for native Americans, who have inhabited the Lahontan region for at least 11,000 years. The Northern Paiutes developed sophisticated fishing technology to harvest this resource. The original distribution of cui-ui was the ancient Lake Lahontan complex, but as a result of climatic changes it was restricted to the Pyramid–Winnemucca–Truckee system by the turn of the 20th century. Transbasin water diversions (1905 to present) have …
