Simile Curses In The Ancient Near East, Old Testament, And Book Of Mormon, Mark J. Morrise Jan 1993

Simile Curses In The Ancient Near East, Old Testament, And Book Of Mormon, Mark J. Morrise

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The simile curse is a type of curse that appears in ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Book of Mormon texts. It consists of two parts: (1) an event (e.g., “Just as this wax is burned by fire”) and (2) an application of that event to the subject of the curse (e.g., “so shall Arpad be burned”). In ancient Near Eastern texts, simile curses appear in written treaties and were often part of a ritual acted out during a treaty ceremony. In the Old Testament, simile curses appear primarily in prophetic writings as literary devices. In the Book of Mormon, …

The Tree Of Life, A Personification Of Christ, Jeanette W. Miller Jan 1993

The Tree Of Life, A Personification Of Christ, Jeanette W. Miller

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Throughout history in many cultures, man has looked to the tree of life as a symbol of eternal life. The form of the tree of life varies according to a culture’s perception of the universe. Many early Christians saw the tree of life as a personification of Jesus Christ. It may be that the tree of life vision in the Book of Mormon was presented to introduce the Savior and his ministry. We may learn much about the Lord’s calling and personality by combining a study of various cultural ideas of the tree of life with the testimonies of the …

The Myth Of The Persecuted Female Healer, Jane P. Davidson Jan 1993

The Myth Of The Persecuted Female Healer, Jane P. Davidson

Quidditas

The idea that most women condemned as witches during the classic periods of witch persecution in Europe (between 1500 and 1700) were in actuality unlicensed healers who were suppressed by the male medical establishment arose among feminist writers, historians, and religious leaders. This idea has been around for more than twenty years now and has become a familiar strain in women's studies. It has been presented often as historically valid by scholars of both genders. The theory is that the midwife, the 'cunning woman', and the female folk herbalist were condemned as witches by male physicians in order to keep …

The Experience Of The Black Death In Bologna As Revealed By The Notarial Registers, Shona Kelly Wray Jan 1993

The Experience Of The Black Death In Bologna As Revealed By The Notarial Registers, Shona Kelly Wray

Quidditas

The Black Death of 1348 has fascinated readers and scholars for centuries. In this century it has been the subject of innumerable debates. Historians have argued back and forth about the demographic effects of the plague, about whether or not it instigated a period of economic depression, or even whether it represented a major event in history. Similarly, disagreement has raged, both inside and outside of the historical discipline, about the medical history and epidemiology of the plague. Fewer studies, however, have focused on the more immediate effects of the plague in localized areas. These scholars have attempted to uncover …

Pus, Pox, Propaganda And Progress: The Compulsory Smallpox Vaccination Controversy In Utah, 1899-1901, Eric L. Bluth Jan 1993

Pus, Pox, Propaganda And Progress: The Compulsory Smallpox Vaccination Controversy In Utah, 1899-1901, Eric L. Bluth

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the compulsory smallpox vaccination controversy in Utah, 1899-1901. It looks at the two smallpox epidemics during 1899-1901 and follows the boards of health attempts to eradicate smallpox primarily by compelling the vaccination of school children.

Dr. Theodore B. Beatty, secretary of the State Board of Health, championed the effort to vaccinate all Utahns; however, the opposition led by Charles W. Penrose, editor of the Deseret Evening News, produced anti-compulsion and vaccination information which influenced Utahns to generally oppose vaccination. Consequently, the legislature passed an anti-compulsory vaccination statute over the governor's veto to annul the courts decision …

Of All Things! Classic Quotations From Hugh Nibley, Gary P. Gillum

Maxwell Institute Publications

When you hear the name “Hugh Nibley” what do you think of? Intellect? Scholarship? Ancient religions? Temple worship? The study of civilizations? Surely, but there’s more. Brother Nibley has a keen sense of humor. And he turns a pithy phrase as no one else can. Here in one volume are many of the most entertaining and also the deepest of Brother Nibley’s thoughts on society, science, education, Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon and other sacred writings, the temple, sustaining church leaders, and many other topics. These are not the jottings of some stuffy scholar. These are gems of thought …

Divergent Journeys: Devils, Readers, And The Narrator's Art In 'Þe Deuelis Perlament', Gary D. Schmidt

Quidditas

In 1509, Wynkyn de Worde published a five-hundred-line poem that he, in defiance of the poet's own suggestion that the piece be called 'þe Deuelis Perlament' (1 490), entitled 'The Parliment of Fyendys'. It would remain known by that title — if it can be said to have been known at all — for the next three centuries, when the Roxburghe Club reprinted de Worde's text about 1820 for private distribution. A wider audience would wait almost another half-century for Furnivall's EETS edition in 1868. But still another century would pass before 'þe Deuelis Perlament' began to be taken seriously …

Overview Of Acerc Comprehensive Model Development, Thomas H. Fletcher, Scott C. Hill Jan 1993

Overview Of Acerc Comprehensive Model Development, Thomas H. Fletcher, Scott C. Hill

Faculty Publications

A major objective of the Advanced Combustion Engineering Research Center (ACERC) is the development of comprehensive combustion models to help in the solution of critical national combustion problems. Computer models incorporate research and technology results from center projects and from external research programs. The synergistic integration of scientific knowledge that is expected from the NSF engineering research centers is demonstrated to a great extent at ACERC by the development of these software tools. The transfer of technology from ACERC to industry is also accomplished in part by the implementation of the models at industrial firms. The effort to develop such …

Terrestrial Vertebrates Of The Mono Lake Islands, California, Michael L. Morrison, William M. Block, Joseph R. Jehl Jr., Linnea S. Hall

Great Basin Naturalist

We compared vertebrate populations between the two major islands (Paoha and Negit) in Mono Lake, California, and the adjacent mainland to further elucidate the mechanisms underlying island colonization. Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and montane voles (Microtus montanus) were captured on Paoha, but only deer mice were captured on Negit. In contrast, eight species of rodents were captured on the mainland. Overall rodent abundance on Paoha and the mainland was similar, but on Negit it was about three times greater than on Paoha or the mainland. Adult deer mice from Paoha were significantly (P < .05) smaller in most external body characteristics than mainland mice. Coyotes (Canis latrans …

Botanical Content Of Black-Tailed Jackrabbit Diets On Semidesert Rangeland, Tchouassi Wansi, Rex D. Pieper, Reldon F. Beck, Leigh W. Murray

Great Basin Naturalist

Botanical content of black-tailed jackrabbit diets was determined by microhistological examination of fecal samples collected from six different vegetation types in southern New Mexico on three dates. Grasses comprised the largest component of the jackrabbit diets, with dropseed species (Sporobolus spp.) and black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda) the most abundant grasses in the diets. Leatherweed croton (Croton pottsii) and silverleaf nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium) were important forbs on most vegetation types. Diet composition varied in response to season and vegetation type. Grasses were important during the summer growing season, while forbs were selected during their …

Winter Nutrient Content And Deer Use Of Gambel Oak Twigs In North Central Utah, Rosemary L. Pendleton, Fred J. Wagstaff, Bruce L. Welch

Great Basin Naturalist

We examined winter nutritional quality of current-year bud and stem tissues from burned and unburned stands of Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii Nutt.). Nutritional analyses were based on the amount of forage consumed by wintering mule deer. Deer use along the Utah Valley foothills averaged 6.25–10.7 cm of current-year growth. Of the tissues examined, post-fire bud tissue had the highest nutrient content, with a mean of 9.51% crude protein, 0.19% phosphorus, and 34.0% in vitro digestibility. Composite values (bud + stem) for unburned stands were slightly higher in crude protein and phosphorus and lower in digestibility than those reported in …

Vascular Flora Of Kane Lake Cirque, Pioneer Mountains, Idaho, Robert K. Moseley, Susan Bernatas

Great Basin Naturalist

Kane Lake Cirque lies in the western Pioneer Mountains of south central Idaho. An inventory of the high elevation flora of the cirque revealed the presence of 180 vascular taxa representing 95 genera and 30 families. Five alpine taxa are here documented from Idaho for the first time: Carex incurviformis Mack., Draba fladnizensis Wilfen., Potentilla nivea L., Ranunculus gelidus Kar. & Kir., and Ranunculus pygmaeus Wahlenb. Kane Lake Cirque also contains populations of four additional alpine taxa considered to be of conservation concern in Idaho: Erigeron humilis Graham, Parnassia kotzebuei Cham., Saxifraga adscendens L., and Saxifraga cernua L.

Mushroom Consumption (Mycophagy) By North American Cervids, Karen L. Launchbaugh, Philip J. Urness Dec 1992

Mushroom Consumption (Mycophagy) By North American Cervids, Karen L. Launchbaugh, Philip J. Urness

Great Basin Naturalist

Native mushrooms play an important, though often underestimated, role in deer, elk, and caribou diets in North America. Mushrooms are often noted as an unusual or anomalous food in the diets of cervids; yet they often dominate diets in the late summer and fall in forested areas of western North America and throughout the year in the southeastern U.S. Mushrooms are particularly high in protein (16–19%), phosphorus (average 0.75%), and potassium (average 2%). Also, mushroom production is generally greatest in fall. Therefore, they are a highly nutritious food in late season when other native forages may marginally meet basal nutrient …

Species Of Eimeria From The Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus Tridecemlineatus, From Wyoming, Robert S. Seville, Diane M. Thomas, Russell Pickering, Nancy L. Stanton

Great Basin Naturalist

Five species of the coccidian genus Eimeria (E. beecheyi [prevalence = 17.9%], E. callospermophili-morainensis[28.6%], E. larimerensis [16.1%], and E. bilamellata [3.6%]) were recovered from 56, 13-lined ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridicemlineatus) collected from two sites in eastern Wyoming. Two squirrels from one site were also passing an unidentified polysporocystic coccidian. Infected squirrels were found to harbor from one to three species simultaneously. Previously these same eimerian species were found infecting sympatric populations of Wyoming ground squirrels. (Spermophilus elegans) and white-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys leucurus) at one of the sites; it is suggested that …

Can Townsend's Ground Squirrels Survive On A Diet Of Exotic Annuals?, Eric Yensen, Dana L. Quinney Dec 1992

Can Townsend's Ground Squirrels Survive On A Diet Of Exotic Annuals?, Eric Yensen, Dana L. Quinney

Great Basin Naturalist

Southwestern Idaho desert shrub-bunchgrass rangeland is being invaded by fire-prone exotic annuals that permanently dominate the landscape following wildfires. This study was undertaken to describe diets of Townsend's ground squirrels (Spermophilus townsendii idahoensis) at four study sites with varying degrees of exotic annual invasion to determine if the squirrels could utilize high proportions of exotic annuals in their diets. Townsend's ground squirrels were collected in March and May of 1987 and 1988, and stomach contents were analyzed using a microhistological technique. Grasses comprised 37–87% of Townsend's ground squirrel diets at the four sites. Native species, especially Sandberg's bluegrass …
