Nature Among The Mormons: An Ecocritical Approach To Mormon Literature, Gail D. Ballard Jan 1996

Nature Among The Mormons: An Ecocritical Approach To Mormon Literature, Gail D. Ballard

Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly, environmentalists have focused on Judeo-Christian tradition as the cause of Western culture's ecological crisis. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the charges against Judeo-Christian tradition and to show how the revealed doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provide possible solutions to environmental challenges. The resulting Latter-day Saint environmental paradigm will be superimposed on selected Mormon literature to determine how effectively the doctrines taught by Church authorities filtered into popular Mormon culture.

Despite the inspired teachings of Latter-day Saint prophets, Mormons remain unimpressive in their environmental practices. My research will show that while …

Fictional Case Of Landmine Company And The Town Of Mudville Jan 1996

Fictional Case Of Landmine Company And The Town Of Mudville

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Landmine Company owns some land near a national forest amid the Rocky Mountains. The company does a lot of logging, mining and resource refinement in a factory on that land. They also mine and log on the national forest land, for the Department of the Interior (DOI) granted them special mining and logging permits. Naturally, their operations create a considerable amount of pollution and inconvenience to the general area, which includes the National Forest and, Mudville, a fairly large town bordering the forest for which the company provides several hundred jobs and a large slice of the tax base. Founded …

City Of Mudville Vs. State Department Of Environmental Quality, Andrew Christensen

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The City of Mud ville, having witnessed an increase in childhood cancer and other illnesses coincident with a rise in levels of toxins in the area's watershed, believes that the State Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has failed to fulfill its statutory mandate to "ensure a safe and healthy environment for all residents (and) maintain healthy ecosystems needed for the development of tourist activities." Specifically, the city is suing the DEQ to force it to demonstrate that the DEQ has fulfilled its mandate by either a) confirming the EPA's compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDW A), orb) exercising …

Defining Responsibility: The Citizens Of Mudville V. Epa, Jenny Rebecca Oman

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

A logging, mining, and resource refinement company called Landmine, which operates near national forest land by the Rocky Mountains, has created a severe water pollution problem to the surrounding area, especially for a large town called Mudville. The company does a great deal of its mining and logging inside the national forest, for which Landmine Company possesses special permits to do so from the Department of the Interior (DOI). In addition, the wells that are used in the area share a common aquifer with both the company and the national forest. The wells have increasingly become tainted with elements and …

Testimony In Art: John Hafen's Illustrations For “O My Father”, Dawn Pheysey

BYU Studies

When artist John Hafen was a young man, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sent him to the Julian Academy in Paris so that he could improve his skills and further the kingdom by painting murals for the Church. Towards the end of his life, Hafen used the artistic skills he had developed to create eight illustrations for the famous poem “O My Father” by Eliza R. Snow. His lifetime of struggle gave him a spiritual maturity that is clear in his sincere and beautiful work. The art for "O My Father" has been called one …

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady Jan 1996

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the stories which revolve around folk legend Hugh Winder Nibley and what those stories mean to the people of Brigham Young University. Folklore reveals who we are and what is important to us. But, interestingly, folklore tends to reveal more about the person telling the story than about the subject of the story itself. People can't remember every story they hear. The ones they do remember are important to them. The stories are important because they fulfill basic needs of the teller. Such needs are a desire to look up to a hero, a need to fit …

Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk Jan 1996

Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a record of a journey into the pioneer past both literally and metaphorically. The physical journey retracing the Oregon and Mormon trails was made in September of 1993, the year I was a National Endowment for the Humanities/Reader's Digest Teacher-Scholar; however, my intellectual and emotional journey into the lives of pioneer women covers several years of study. I compare my life experiences with those of pioneer women whom I studied, using geographical settings on the trail trip as memory triggers. My husband, as my traveling companion, plays an important role in this journey of discovery. Major themes …

Nutritional And Alimentative State Of The Canaviri, Pocohata, Colina Blanca, Puente Arriba And Villa Arriendo, Ingavi Province, Department Of La Paz - 1996, Juana F. Moraima Gonzles Tapia

Theses and Dissertations

The intent of the present work responds to the necessity of the settlers in depressed areas of La Paz's Altiplano in Bolivia of knowing the reality surrounding the unfolding of their lives. The focus takes into account only one part of all that weighs down on them: that part dealing with their nutritional and alimentative state. This study takes in the communities of Canaviri, Pocohata, Colina Blanca, Puente Arriba, and Villa Arriendo of the Ingavi Province in the Department of La Paz. The variable taken into account is the families' nutritional situation; these families possessing the same status in the …

Paradise In Poverty, Visti Favrholt Jan 1996

Paradise In Poverty, Visti Favrholt

The Bridge

Junction City, in the early thirties, was a sleepy, small

town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. With a

population of only a few hundred, it could hardly be

called a city. But the forefathers had visions of a major rail way

and highway junction at this location, providing prosperity

and a great future for all. As it was, the railway went

straight through town and trains seldom stopped there.

Relative Vulnerability To Extirpation Of Montane Breeding Birds In The Great Basin, J. Michael Reed Oct 1995

Relative Vulnerability To Extirpation Of Montane Breeding Birds In The Great Basin, J. Michael Reed

Great Basin Naturalist

Seventy-four species of montane breeding birds were evaluated for their vulnerability to extirpation in the Great Basin. Although none of these species are endemic to the Great Basin, the montane island system results in a unique pattern of species associations. Loss of species from these montane communities could be indicative of region wide habitat degradation. I ranked susceptibility to extirpation based on seven biological variables: geographic range, population size, reproductive potential, susceptibility to cowbird parasitism, migratory status, and diet specialization. Each variable was weighted equally in its contribution to vulnerability, and scores were the sum of trait scores for each …

Prey Choices And Foraging Efficiency Of Recently Fledged California Gulls At Mono Lake, California, Chris S. Elphick, Margaret A. Rubega Oct 1995

Prey Choices And Foraging Efficiency Of Recently Fledged California Gulls At Mono Lake, California, Chris S. Elphick, Margaret A. Rubega

Great Basin Naturalist

We studied the foraging biology of recently fledged California Gulls (Larus californicus) at Mono Lake during August–September 1991. We made behavioral observations to collect information on the relative proportions of different prey types in the diet of these birds and took plankton tows to determine the relative abundance of each prey in the water column. These data show that alkali flies (Ephydra hians) were the primary constituent of the diet and that they were eaten at a much higher rate than one would expect based on their abundance. We also determined the number of feeding attempts …

Grasshopper Densities On Grazed And Ungrazed Rangeland Under Drought Conditions In Southern Idaho, Dennis J. Fielding, Merlyn A. Brusven Oct 1995

Grasshopper Densities On Grazed And Ungrazed Rangeland Under Drought Conditions In Southern Idaho, Dennis J. Fielding, Merlyn A. Brusven

Great Basin Naturalist

Low-density grasshopper populations were sampled at 15 pairs of rangeland sites in south central Idaho. One site of each pair had not been grazed by livestock for at least 10 years. Grazed sites were managed under normal grazing regimes established by the Bureau of Land Management.

Mean grasshopper density was higher on ungrazed sites than on grazed sites. Proportions of Melanoplus sanguinipes were higher on ungrazed sites than on grazed sites and were higher on annual grasslands than on other vegetation types. Effects of grazing appeared to be independent of vegetation type.

Proportions of Comhpocerinae, a subfamily of grasshoppers that …

An Integrated Framework For Learning And Reasoning, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez Aug 1995

An Integrated Framework For Learning And Reasoning, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

Learning and reasoning are both aspects of what is considered to be intelligence. Their studies within AI have been separated historically, learning being the topic of machine learning and neural networks, and reasoning falling under classical (or symbolic) AI. However, learning and reasoning are in many ways interdependent. This paper discusses the nature of some of these interdependencies and proposes a general framework called FLARE, that combines inductive learning using prior knowledge together with reasoning in a propositional setting. Several examples that test the framework are presented, including classical induction, many important reasoning protocols and two simple expert systems.

Alpine Vascular Flora Of The Tushar Mountains, Utah, Alan C. Taye Jul 1995

Alpine Vascular Flora Of The Tushar Mountains, Utah, Alan C. Taye

Great Basin Naturalist

The Tushar Mountains of southwestern Utah rise to a maximum elevation of 3709 m, with timberline and krummholz reaching maximum elevations of 3438 m and 3566 m, respectively. Voucher specimens were collected from the alpine region during eight field seasons to inventory this largely unknown alpine flora. Listed are 171 vascular plant species from 102 genera and 34 families that occur in eight types of plant communities within an alpine area of about 19.3 km2, the seven largest families are Asteraceae (29 species), Poacea (20), Brassicaceae (13), Rosaceae (12), Cyperaceae (11), Caryophyllaceae (10), and Fabaceae (8). Thirteen species …

North American Types Of Oxytropis Dc. (Leguminosae) At The Natural History Museum And Royal Botanic Garden, England, With Nomenclatural Comments And A New Variety, S. L. Welsh

Great Basin Naturalist

Specimens of Oxytropis in the herbaria of The Natural History Museum and Royal Botanic Garden were examined to interpret their role in nomenclature. This is the first attempt at a systematic overview of specimens so important in understanding the genus as it occurs in North America. The review of specimens at BM and K during the present research has resulted in realignment of names of some of the taxa. Oxytropis campestris var. gracils (A. Nelson) Barneby is recognized herein as being predated by O. campestris var. spicata Hook., O. sericea var. spicata (Hook.) Barneby is replaced by O. sericea var. …
