Managing Temporal Data In A Comprehensive Modeling Environment, Norman L. Jones, E. James Nelson, Colby T. Manwaring Mar 2000

Managing Temporal Data In A Comprehensive Modeling Environment, Norman L. Jones, E. James Nelson, Colby T. Manwaring

Faculty Publications

Numerous graphical pre- and post-processors have been developed for numerical modeling. Many of these systems support numerical models that can be used for both steady state and transient simulations. Dealing with transient data can be particularly difficult in such an environment due to the differing time scales and units associated with transient field data and boundary conditions. A data model and a set of functions are presented in this paper as a simple, yet powerful strategy for managing temporal data in a comprehensive modeling environment. The strategy makes it possible to seamlessly integrate multiple types of transient data and convert …

Numerical Aspects Of Discrete And Continuum Hybrid Models In Cell Biology, J. C. Dallon Feb 2000

Numerical Aspects Of Discrete And Continuum Hybrid Models In Cell Biology, J. C. Dallon

Faculty Publications

In this paper we introduce a method of modeling which mixes continuum and discrete variables, and explain two models in cell biology that use this method. The first application deals with wound healing, more specifically the collagen alignment in scar tissue formation and the second models early aggregation in the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum. We solve these models using numerical techniques similar to the particle-in-cell method which requires that the discrete and continuum variables are interpolated one to the other. The implementational and numerical details are discussed in an informal and practical manner with particular attention given to the …

Community Structure Of Eleodes Beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) In The Shortgrass Steppe: Scale-Dependent Uses Of Heterogeneity, Nancy E. Mcintyre Jan 2000

Community Structure Of Eleodes Beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) In The Shortgrass Steppe: Scale-Dependent Uses Of Heterogeneity, Nancy E. Mcintyre

Western North American Naturalist

Patterns in the community structure of darkling beetle (9 Eleodes spp., Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) assemblages in the shortgrass steppe of north central Colorado were monitored by live pitfall trapping for 4 summers. There were significant correlations among weather (temperature and precipitation), species richness, and number of individuals per species captured; effects from weather conditions also displayed 1-month and 1-yr delayed effects. Population densities of 2 eleodid species were monitored by mark-recapture methods. Densities of these species varied relatively little among years and sites, although density was correlated with temperature and precipitation. Abiotic influences on both density and richness differed between 2 …

Plecoptera And Trichoptera Species Distribution Related To Environmental Characteristics Of The Metal-Polluted Arkansas River, Colorado, L. P. Ruse, Scott J. Herrmann Jan 2000

Plecoptera And Trichoptera Species Distribution Related To Environmental Characteristics Of The Metal-Polluted Arkansas River, Colorado, L. P. Ruse, Scott J. Herrmann

Western North American Naturalist

The Upper Arkansas catchment has been polluted with heavy metals from mining for almost 140 yr. Adult Plecoptera and Trichoptera species distributions were recorded from 22 stations along 259 km of main river during 1984–85 so that these could be related to metal deposition and other environmental characteristics. Chemically or physically perturbed sites had poor species richness compared with adjacent sites. There was no sequential downstream increase in species numbers. Filter-feeders proportionally increased downstream as predators declined; these proportions were reset at a high-energy site before the trend resumed. Using canonical correspondence analysis, we found that species composition was most …

Suitability Of Shrub Establishment On Wyoming Mined Lands Reclaimed For Wildlife Habitat, Richard A. Olson, James K. Gores, D. Terrance Booth, Gerald E. Schuman Jan 2000

Suitability Of Shrub Establishment On Wyoming Mined Lands Reclaimed For Wildlife Habitat, Richard A. Olson, James K. Gores, D. Terrance Booth, Gerald E. Schuman

Western North American Naturalist

Restoring coal mined land to pre-mining shrub cover, density, height, community composition, and diversity to renew wildlife habitat quality is a priority for reclamation specialists. Long-term shrub reestablishment success on reclaimed mined land in Wyoming and suitability of these lands for wildlife habitat are unknown. Fourteen reclaimed study sites, 10 yr old or older, were selected on 8 mines in Wyoming to evaluate shrub reestablishment and wildlife habitat value for antelope (Antilocapra americana) and sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). Five sites were categorized as fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) sites and 9 as fourwing saltbush/big sagebrush …

Wood And Understory Production Under A Range Of Ponderosa Pine Stocking Levels, Black Hills, South Dakota, Daniel W. Uresk, Carleton B. Edminster, Kieth E. Severson Jan 2000

Wood And Understory Production Under A Range Of Ponderosa Pine Stocking Levels, Black Hills, South Dakota, Daniel W. Uresk, Carleton B. Edminster, Kieth E. Severson

Western North American Naturalist

Stemwood and understory production (kg ha−1) were estimated during 3 nonconsecutive years on 5 growing stock levels of ponderosa pine including clearcuts and unthinned stands. Stemwood production was consistently greater at mid- and higher pine stocking levels, and understory production was greater in stands with less pine; however, there were no differences in total (stemwood + understory) production. Based on loss of productivity, there is no argument that small clearcuts and unthinned stands should not be included in site plans. They contribute significantly to community structure, particularly to plant and animal species richness.

Dreams At Conception In The French Lancelot-Grail Romances (Thirteenth Century), Reginald Hyatte Jan 2000

Dreams At Conception In The French Lancelot-Grail Romances (Thirteenth Century), Reginald Hyatte

Quidditas

The Lancelot-Grail romances offer problematic instances of rewriting in their treatment of dreams: a songe or a vision recounted to an adult character about himself in the Vulgate Lancelot proper (ca. 1215–20) appears “prewritten” in a later composed romance as his mother’s or father’s dream in an enactment of the scene at or near his con- ception. In the cases under study, Queen Elaine’s dream the night Lance- lot was conceived in the Vulgate Story of Merlin (L’estoire de Merlin, after 1230) and Arthur’s dream soon after Mordret’s conception in the post-Vulgate Merlin Continuation (La suite du …

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Questions And Responses For Latter-Day Saints, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks Jan 2000

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Questions And Responses For Latter-Day Saints, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks

Maxwell Institute Publications

Since their initial discovery in 1947, the ancient scrolls found in caves near the Dead Sea have stirred public curiosity. For Latter-day Saints, whose scriptural tradition speaks of sacred records to come forth in the last days, the Dead Sea Scrolls naturally give rise to questions such as:

— Are there references to Christ or Christianity in the scrolls?

— Do the scrolls contain scripture missing from the Bible?

— Is the plan of salvation attested in the scrolls?

— Do the scrolls refer to Joseph Smith or other latter-day figures?

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Questions and Responses for Latter-day …

Allen D. Breck Award Winner: Anne Southwell, Metaphysical Poet, Hugh Wilson Jan 2000

Allen D. Breck Award Winner: Anne Southwell, Metaphysical Poet, Hugh Wilson

Quidditas

T.S. Eliot has remarked that "[n]ot only is [it] extremely difficult to define metaphysical poetry, but [it is] difficult to decide what poets practise it and in which of their verses." Although the terminology was initially ad hoc, post hoc, and somewhat hostile, the adjective has been transvalued and it “stuck.” But ever since John Dryden accused John Donne of affecting “the metaphysics,” and “perplexing the fair sex with nice speculations of philosophy,” and long before Samuel Johnson wrote that the metaphysical poets were “men of learning,” there has been a tacit assumption that women did not …

The Lioness In The Text: Mary Of Egypt As Immasculated Female Saint, Onnaca Heron Jan 2000

The Lioness In The Text: Mary Of Egypt As Immasculated Female Saint, Onnaca Heron

Quidditas

The oral legend of Saint Mary of Egypt, whose death is assigned the date of about A.D. 430, was first recorded in Greek by Sophronius, bishop of Jerusalem, in the mid-sixth century; roughly two centuries later, Paulus, the deacon of the church of holy Naples, translated Sophronius’s text into Latin. While closely following his Greek source in the Latin translation, Paulus the deacon inserted a “Prologus auctoris,” an introductory allusion to the blinding and healing of Tobit by the archangel Raphael

Wyoming, Nebraska Territory: Joseph W. Young And The Mormon Emigration Of 1864, Craig S. Smith Jan 2000

Wyoming, Nebraska Territory: Joseph W. Young And The Mormon Emigration Of 1864, Craig S. Smith

BYU Studies

On a mild and pleasant Monday, February 22, 1864, Joseph A. Young in company with Elders William C. Staines, John W. Young, and H. B. Clawson departed Salt Lake City by overland mail stage for the East to organize and direct the year's gathering of Saints to Zion. Joseph W. Young, also appointed to this task, had already left the city on the preceding stage. After extensive labors ensuring a successful emigration, these untiring servants did not return to their homes and families until late September when the last emigrants were outfitted and on the final leg of their journey.

A Mathematical Model For Spatially Varying Extracellular Matrix, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt Jan 2000

A Mathematical Model For Spatially Varying Extracellular Matrix, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt

Faculty Publications

Orientation of extracellular matrix fibers in the skin is a key ingredient of tissue appearance and function, and differences in fiber alignment are one of the main distinctions between scar tissue and normal skin. In this paper, the authors develop a mathematical model for alignment of collagen fibers and the fibroblast cells that remodel them; the model extends previous work in which spatial variation was excluded. Numerical simulations of the model are presented, which show spatial variations in alignment over long transients, but with spatially uniform behavior in the long term. This is investigated further via asymptotic analysis, using the …

Snow!, Enok Mortensen Jan 2000

Snow!, Enok Mortensen

The Bridge

The winter had been unusually mild. For many years, people had never seen anything like it. The old folks even thought that there was something wrong with such unusual weather. Coal dealers cursed and knocked on their barometers, but the temperature held above freezing and well into December no snow fell. In Grant Park, which Chicago had wrested from Lake Michigan, a faint sun kissed the faded grey lawn and warmed it enough so that fat wealthy women took out their yappy lap dogs. In long uneven rows the homeless lay in rags and stole a belated sleep well into …

Analysis Of The Livestock Production System Of The Poroma Community In The 2 Section Of The Oropeza Province, Department Of Chuquisaca, Freddy Claudio RamíRez Serrudo

Theses and Dissertations

This study was performed in the Poroma community of the Oropeza Province, in the department of Chuquisaca. The Poroma community is characterized by a high poverty level among its members due to a number of different factors. Some of the major factors include: a restricted market, small farms, an absence of support systems, and a lack of support for agricultural development. This lack of support is seen in areas such as: research, roads, electricity, technical assistance, marketing systems, organization, and institutions that support rural development. Numerous studies on the production systems of farmers have described and analyzed the agricultural components …

Evaluation Of 4 Small Doses Of Fertilizer In Growing Maize (Zea Mays L.) In Two Communities Of San Juan Ermita, Chiquimula, Victor Estuardo Villalta Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

Corral de Piedra and Salitron are two communities located in the municipality of San Juan Ermita, which is in the department of Chiquimula, Guatemala. In both communities, the land has very sloped topography with slope grades ranging from 12 to 55%. Agriculture is the main production activity with corn (Zea mays L.) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) being the crops of greatest economic importance. These crops are planted through a system of sequential association commonly called relay. First, corn is planted at the beginning of the rainy season (May or June). Once it has completed its reproductive cycle, beans are planted …

Evaluation Of Forty-Two Corn (Zea Mays L.) Genotypes And Their Tolerance To Drought In Chiquimula, Servin Ardany Flores Galdámez Jan 2000

Evaluation Of Forty-Two Corn (Zea Mays L.) Genotypes And Their Tolerance To Drought In Chiquimula, Servin Ardany Flores Galdámez

Theses and Dissertations

The Corral de Piedra community is located in Chiquimula, Guatemala. The main agricultural activities are corn and bean production, small-scale gardens, and small animal production, such as poultry and pigs. The crop areas are predominantly located on lands with slopes between 12 and 55%, presenting low fertility conditions and poor moisture retention capabilities. In addition, local crop varieties have low productivity potentials and the winter season is characterized by poorly distributed and erratic periods of rain. The Benson Institute introduced a technology transfer model to increase and diversify agricultural production, while preserving current natural resources. An integral part of this …

Dance And Doctrine: Shaker And Mormon Dancing As A Manifestation Of Doctrinal Views Of The Physical Body, Lindsy Stewart Cieslewicz Jan 2000

Dance And Doctrine: Shaker And Mormon Dancing As A Manifestation Of Doctrinal Views Of The Physical Body, Lindsy Stewart Cieslewicz

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis compares the dancing of the Shakers (The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearance) and the Mormons (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or LDS Church) during the nineteenth century, as it was influenced by their doctrinal beliefs about the human body. Specifically, it examines how the role of the physical body in achieving mortal happiness and immortal salvation was viewed by each group and how these beliefs were reflected in their dancing. It describes the different forms of dancing performed by each religious group and how dance functioned as worship and recreation for the …
