Anticipated Effects Of Re-Allocation Of Intensive Livestock In Sandy Areas In The Netherlands, A. P. Van Wezel, R. O. G. Franken, J. D. Van Dam, P. Cleij Jul 2004

Anticipated Effects Of Re-Allocation Of Intensive Livestock In Sandy Areas In The Netherlands, A. P. Van Wezel, R. O. G. Franken, J. D. Van Dam, P. Cleij

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Currently plans are developed for a large-scale 'reconstruction' of the rural area in the Netherlands. Goals of the reconstruction are to diminish veterinary risks and to improve the quality of environment, nature and landscape. Spatial separation of land-use is an important instrument. The plans are prepared at a regional scale, involving stakeholders. We present an ex-ante analysis of the effects of these plans, including cost-effectiveness and integration with related spatial plans. Scenarios for the autonomous development of intensive livestock, spatial data-rich analysis and research in the field of public administration are integrated in the ex-ante analysis.

Diese Aufnahme Ist Bezaubernd Schön: Deutsche Grammophon's 1964 Recording Of The Magic Flute, Aaron Dalton

BYU Studies

Singing speaks most eloquently for itself in real time and doesn't fall into words on paper very easily," writes a former voice teacher of mine. "It is either beautiful or it isn't. If it's beautiful, words aren't adequate. If it isn't, words about it have to be either false or cruel." Why, then, would I offer the following dissection of what I believe to be the greatest recording of arguably the greatest opera? And how, with a glut of Magic Flute recording on the market (I aborted my tally at over forty casts on dozens of labels), can I presume …

From Narrative To Number: A Role For Quantitative Models In Scenario Analysis, Eric Kemp-Benedict Jul 2004

From Narrative To Number: A Role For Quantitative Models In Scenario Analysis, Eric Kemp-Benedict

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

There is growing concern that the predictive mathematical models conventionally used in policy analysis are too limiting to serve as tools in futures studies, because they cannot reproduce the sudden changes seen in real societies. The field of complex systems has successfully produced similar changes in simplified model systems, but has been less successful in practical futures work. Some recent scenario exercises (such as the IPCC scenarios, UNEP’s GEO-3 scenarios, the work of the Global Scenario Group and the European VISIONS project) have addressed this issue by combining wide-ranging narratives with quantitative models, demonstrating that a synthesis between qualitative and …

An Integrated System For The Forest Fire Dynamics Hazard Assessment Over A Wide Area, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi Jul 2004

An Integrated System For The Forest Fire Dynamics Hazard Assessment Over A Wide Area, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

An integrated approach is presented for the assessment of forest fire hazard over a wide geographical area on the basis of real-time information, meteorological forecasts, and territorial data stored in a geographical information system. The paper describes the architecture of a comprehensive system that can be designed in order to manage the overall forest fire risk. Specifically, vegetation modelling, in connection with local meteorological conditions and topography, allows obtaining forecast of the dynamics of moisture contents of the different kinds of dead and live fuels over a wide geographical area. Besides, a semi-physical fire propagation model gives a quantitative evolution …

The Coexistence Of Plankton Species With Various Nutrient Conditions: A Lattice Simulation Model, T. Miyazaki, T. Togashi, T. Suzuki, T. Hashimoto, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura Jul 2004

The Coexistence Of Plankton Species With Various Nutrient Conditions: A Lattice Simulation Model, T. Miyazaki, T. Togashi, T. Suzuki, T. Hashimoto, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In aquatic ecosystems, species diversity is known to be higher in poor nutrient conditions. Theenrichment of nutrition often induces the loss of biodiversity. This phenomenon is called the paradox ofenrichment, since higher nutrient levels can support more species. Furthermore, the species diversity isusually high in most natural communities of phytoplankton. However, the niches of planktonic algae seemalmost identical in apparently homogeneous, aquatic environments. Therefore, the high species diversity ofphytoplankton is incomprehensible and called the paradox of plankton. Mathematical studies show that localcoexistence of competitive species is rare. In a competitive community, the most superior species eliminatesall the inferior species in …

Towards An Environmental Dss Based On Spatio-Temporal Markov Chain Approximation, Gerard Balent, Marc Deconchat, Sylvie Ladet, Roger Martin-Clouaire, Regis Sabbadin Jul 2004

Towards An Environmental Dss Based On Spatio-Temporal Markov Chain Approximation, Gerard Balent, Marc Deconchat, Sylvie Ladet, Roger Martin-Clouaire, Regis Sabbadin

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The aim of this paper is to provide a mathematical model for assessing the influence of forest fragmentation on the dynamics of animal biodiversity in a changing landscape. The model is based on a stochastic, spatially explicit population dynamics model which takes both temporal and spatial dynamics of biological processes into account. Unfortunately, this model is not tractable, so we will use a Monte Carlo simulation method in order to approximate the multidimensional random variables involved. The main strength of our approach is its ability to model generic biological and socio-economic dynamic processes, which are both explicitly spatial and stochastic. …

Implications Of Uncertainty And Variability In The Life Cycle Assessment Of Pig Farming Systems, C. Basset-Mens, H.M.G. Van Der Werf, P. Durand, Ph Leterme Jul 2004

Implications Of Uncertainty And Variability In The Life Cycle Assessment Of Pig Farming Systems, C. Basset-Mens, H.M.G. Van Der Werf, P. Durand, Ph Leterme

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In a case study of pig production systems we propose a simple quantification of the uncertainty of LCA results (intra-system variability) and we explored inter-system variability in order to produce more robust LCA outcomes. Our quantification of the uncertainty took into account the variability of technical performance (crop yield, feed efficiency) and of emission factors (for NH3, N2O and NO3) and the influence of the functional unit (FU) (kg of pig versus hectare used). For farming systems, the inter-system variability was investigated through differentiating by the production mode (conventional, quality label, organic (AB)), and farmer practices (Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) …

Toward An Anthropology Of Apotheosis In Mozart's Magic Flute: A Demonstration Of The Artistic Universality And Vitality Of Certain "Peculiar" Latter-Day Saint Doctrines, Alan F. Keele Jul 2004

Toward An Anthropology Of Apotheosis In Mozart's Magic Flute: A Demonstration Of The Artistic Universality And Vitality Of Certain "Peculiar" Latter-Day Saint Doctrines, Alan F. Keele

BYU Studies

It seems there are certain notions held by Latter-day Saints, deviating almost diametrically from those promulgated by orthodox Christianity, that have the power to evoke form certain conservative Christian quarters the most vituperative fulminations. One thinks immediately of the idea expounded by Joseph Smith at King Follett's funeral that humans have the potential to become gods through a process of perfection experienced by the gods themselves. The orthodox response to this notion in the form of the Godmakers films and other manifestations of righteous indignation has been extraordinary. The paradox, however, is this: Scratch the orthodox surface of Christianity, explore …

From Arcadia To Elysium In The Magic Flute And Weimar Classicism: The Plan Of Salvation And Eighteenth-Century Views Of Moral Progression, John B. Fowles

BYU Studies

The painful sighs are now past.

Elysium's joyful banquets

Drown the slightest moan—

Elysium's life is

Eternal rapture, eternal flight;

Through laughing meadows a brook pipes its tune.

..........

Here faithful couples embrace each other,

Kiss on the velvet green sward

As the soothing west wind caresses them;

Here love is crowned,

Safe from death's merciless blow

It celebrates an eternal wedding feast.

Treatment Of Hypertriglyceridemia With Omega-3 Fatty Acids: A Systematic Review, Amanda Gloria Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: To 1) critically appraise available randomized controlled trials (RTCs) addressing the efficacy of long-chain ω-3 fatty acids as a secondary prevention agent of hypertriglyceridemia, and 2) make recommendations for clinical practice.

Data Sources: All RCTs identified from several databases from 1993-2003 were reviewed by two independent reviewers who extracted data from each study and used the previously tested Boyack and Lookinland Methodological Quality Index (MQI) to determine study quality.

Results: Ten studies reported long-chain ω-3 fatty acids to be effective in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia. The average decrease in triglycerides (TG) was 29%, total cholesterol (TC) 11.6%, very low …

Pressurized Hot Water And Dtpa-Sorbitol, Viable Alternatives For Soil Boron Extraction, Amanda Kathryn Shiffler Jun 2004

Pressurized Hot Water And Dtpa-Sorbitol, Viable Alternatives For Soil Boron Extraction, Amanda Kathryn Shiffler

Theses and Dissertations

Pressurized hot water and DTPA-Sorbitol are two relatively new soil boron (B) extraction methods with potential to replace the cumbersome hot water extraction. The objective of this research is to produce data in support of acceptance or rejection of these two alternative B extractions. The three soil tests were used to extract B from samples of calcareous sand and silt loam and limed, loamy fine sand treated with 10 levels of B and incubated for 7 and 28 d. As B application increased so did extractable B with each extraction method. High correlations (r of 0.977 to 0.999) were observed …

Microcredit In Rural Bangladesh: Is It Reaching The Poorest?, Dipankar Datta Jun 2004

Microcredit In Rural Bangladesh: Is It Reaching The Poorest?, Dipankar Datta

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

During the last decade microcredit has exploded in Bangladesh, as well as in a large part of the third world. Empirical studies give strong evidence that microcredit has had positive effects on two vital areas of national development; namely, the alleviation of poverty and the empowerment of women. Despite these positive impacts, some critics question the efficacy of microcredit in reaching the extreme poor. Some argue that while microcredit has contributed positively to the well-being of the poor in general, it has failed to reach the poorest of the poor. This paper explores the reasons why microcredit programs rarely reach …

Environmental Protection And Microenterprise Development In The Developing World: A Model Based On The Latin American Experience, Mark D. Wenner, Norman Wright, Abhishek Lal

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Microenterprises constitute the vast majority of business firms in low- and middle-income developing countries. In Latin America, the sector contributes significantly to employment and gross domestic product. Recently, the expansion of microlending programs has been viewed as an effective means of developing the microenterprise sector and alleviating poverty. However, the nexus between microenterprise development and environmental degradation has remained largely unexplored. It is suspected that the pervasive informality of the microenterprise sector, its sheer size, and the high incidence of poverty in the sector contribute to cumulative environmental degradation and low standards of occupational safety. This paper highlights commonly observed …

Species are defined using a variety of different operational techniques. While discussion of the various methodologies has previously been restricted mostly to taxonomists, the demarcation of species is also crucial for conservation biology. Unfortunately, different methods of diagnosing species can arrive at different entities. Most prominently, it is widely thought that use of a phylogenetic species concept may lead to recognition of a far greater number of much less inclusive units. As a result, studies of the same group of organisms can produce not only different species identities but also different species range and number of individuals. To assess the …

Community And Land Attachment Of Chagga Women On Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Elizabeth Parnell Carr May 2004

Community And Land Attachment Of Chagga Women On Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Elizabeth Parnell Carr

Theses and Dissertations

Chagga women who control land on Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, have a deep and profound sense of attachment to their lands and homes. This thesis compares their reasons for attachment to the systemic model. The systemic model states that community attachment is dependent on social ties and interactions. The three factors that lead to these ties are length of residence, social status, and age. In-depth interviews with women in 2002 and 2003, a survey from 2002, and field notes from 2002 and 2003 are used to explain the main factors of attachment of women in three villages on the mountain: Mbahe, …

Margaret Cavendish And Scientific Discourse In Seventeenth-Century England, Alisa Curtis Bolander May 2004

Margaret Cavendish And Scientific Discourse In Seventeenth-Century England, Alisa Curtis Bolander

Theses and Dissertations

Although the natural philosophy of Margaret Cavendish is eclectic and uncustomary, it offers an important critique of contemporary scientific methods, especially mechanism and experimentalism. As presented in Observations upon Experimental Philosophy and Blazing World, Cavendish's natural philosophy incorporates rationalistic and subjective elements, urging contemporary natural philosophers to recognize that pure objectivity is unattainable through any method of inquiry and that reason is essential in making sense and use of scientific observation.

In addition to its scientific implications, Cavendish's three-tiered model of matter presents interesting sociopolitical associations. Through her own use of metaphor and her theoretical fusion of matter and motion, …

Effect Of Cryptobiotic Crust Type On Microarthropod Assemblages In Piñon-Juniper Woodland In Central New Mexico, S. L. Brantley, U. L. Shepherd Apr 2004

Effect Of Cryptobiotic Crust Type On Microarthropod Assemblages In Piñon-Juniper Woodland In Central New Mexico, S. L. Brantley, U. L. Shepherd

Western North American Naturalist

Cryptobiotic crusts make up an important part of the ground cover in arid systems. Along with their roles of retarding soil erosion and enhancing soil fertility, crusts may also be supporting local and regional arthropod biodiversity. We inventoried arthropod species in mossy, lichen, and mixed (lichen and mossy) cryptobiotic crusts at 2 sites in central New Mexico piñon-juniper habitat. We collected 240 crust samples and used a heptane flotation technique to extract the microarthropods. We found 39 species of microarthropods and small macroarthropods, with significantly fewer species on lichen. Species richness was higher in March than in August, but diversity …

Influence Of Yellow Starthistle (Centaurea Solstitialis) On Small Mammals In Central California, Kirsten Christopherson, Michael L. Morrison

Western North American Naturalist

Yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis) is native to Europe and Asia and has quickly invaded disturbed grasslands and rangelands in the western United States. The purpose of our study was to determine the effects of starthistle on rodents at Beale Air Force Base, Yuba County, California, by examining rodent species diversity, species abundance, age structure, and reproductive condition among locations with low, medium, and high percent cover and height of starthistle. Listed in decreasing order of abundance, the rodents were house mouse (Mus musculus), California vole (Microtus californicus), deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), western …

Cone And Seed Production In Pinus Ponderosa: A Review, Pamela G. Krannitz, Thomas E. Duralia Apr 2004

Cone And Seed Production In Pinus Ponderosa: A Review, Pamela G. Krannitz, Thomas E. Duralia

Western North American Naturalist

Factors associated with seed cone production in Pinus ponderosa were reviewed to identify broad patterns and potential effectiveness of restoration activities. Cone and seed production are quite variable, with differences between (1) years, (2) sites, and (3) individual trees. Between-year, population-wide crop failures suggest large-scale triggers for cone and seed production, perhaps high temperatures and dry weather. Stem diameter is the most important determinant for cone production at the tree level, with other factors such as genetic disposition, moisture, soil nutrients, and insect pests and disease playing a smaller role. Some extrinsic factors affect growth rate, indirectly affecting cone production. …

Plant Species Diversity In A Grassland Plant Community: Evidence For Forbs As A Critical Management Consideration, Monica L. Pokorny, Roger L. Sheley, Tony J. Svejcar, Richard E. Engel Apr 2004

Plant Species Diversity In A Grassland Plant Community: Evidence For Forbs As A Critical Management Consideration, Monica L. Pokorny, Roger L. Sheley, Tony J. Svejcar, Richard E. Engel

Western North American Naturalist

This study quantified species and functional group diversity in a grassland plant community in southwestern Montana. Specific objectives were to measure the richness and density of functional groups within the grassland community, measure the biomass of each functional group, and calculate diversity indices for each functional group. We hypothesized that diversity would be greater than previous descriptions for the Festuca idahoensis/Agropyron spicatum habitat type because our multiple-season method would recognize seasonal and environmental variations in community composition. Of the species present, we hypothesized that forb functional groups account for the majority of richness and biomass of this grassland plant community. …
