Map Interactivity: Exploring The Benefits In The Utah Studies Classroom, Whitney Fae Taylor
Map Interactivity: Exploring The Benefits In The Utah Studies Classroom, Whitney Fae Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis introduces map interactivity as a new learning resource for historical geography subjects. The purpose of the research is to examine the ability of interactive maps to improve the learning process in social studies classrooms in Utah's public schools. An interactive map and paper maps focused on Utah settlement and hypothetical geographical attractors were created for this research. A two-group experiment was conducted in six classes of Utah Studies; the experimental group used an interactive map, and the control group used a series of paper maps and corresponding tables. Students' conceptual knowledge was tested before and after they used …
Algal Succession And Nutrient Dynamics In Elephant Butte Reservoir, Eric J. Nielsen
Algal Succession And Nutrient Dynamics In Elephant Butte Reservoir, Eric J. Nielsen
Theses and Dissertations
A water quality model was created for Elephant Butte Reservoir, New Mexico to understand nutrient dynamics and algal response during a three year period. The model chosen for this study was CE-QUAL-W2 because of its proven ability to represent hydrodynamics and the ability to represent multiple algal groups. Elephant Butte has been subject to large algal blooms. This study examined the phosphorus loading into the reservoir to see if it could sustain the observed algal growth. Data showed that the amount of bioavailable phosphorus was more than enough to support large blooms. This study also was an initial attempt to …
A Uintan (Late Middle Eocene) Flora And Fauna From The Uinta Basin, Utah, Stephen Dee Sandau
A Uintan (Late Middle Eocene) Flora And Fauna From The Uinta Basin, Utah, Stephen Dee Sandau
Theses and Dissertations
Late Middle Eocene time marks one of the most dynamic periods of the Paleogene in the western interior of North America. Analysis of an extensive, new collection of plant, invertebrate, and vertebrae fossils from the Uinta Formation in the Uinta Basin, south of Myton, Utah, USA, provides evidence of environmental change. Paleobotanical specimens are preserved in late stage Uinta Lake sediments and coarse-grained fluvial sediments which are stratigraphically 650 to 660 m above the Green River Formation. Deposition rates estimates of 18 to 55 cm/kyr, for Uinta Lake sediments in the Uinta Basin suggest a period of 1.18 Ma to …
Vegetation Response Of A Wyoming Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata Ssp. Wyomingensis) Community To 6 Mechanical Treatments In Rich County, Utah, Daniel David Summers
Vegetation Response Of A Wyoming Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata Ssp. Wyomingensis) Community To 6 Mechanical Treatments In Rich County, Utah, Daniel David Summers
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the importance of sagebrush to shrub-steppe ecosystems and associated plant and animal species has been recognized. The historical removal of herbaceous species by excessive and uncontrolled livestock grazing on many of our sagebrush ecosystems has resulted in a stagnant state where dense, competitive stands of sagebrush prevent herbaceous species from recovering. Most early research on sagebrush control was directed toward eradication to increase herbaceous forage for livestock production, rather than sagebrush thinning to improve shrub vigor and understory production for wildlife habitat and community diversity. Mechanical treatments have the ability to retain shrub and herbaceous components, while …
Phylogenetic History, Morphological Parallelism, And Speciation In A Complex Of Appalachian Salamanders (Genus: Desmognathus), Nathan D. Jackson
Phylogenetic History, Morphological Parallelism, And Speciation In A Complex Of Appalachian Salamanders (Genus: Desmognathus), Nathan D. Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the mechanisms that generate shared morphologies across closely related taxa is important when identifying distinct evolutionary lineages using morphological characters. Desmognathus salamanders are an ideal group for testing hypotheses concerning the correlation between morphological similarity and genetic exchange within and among nominal species due to a pattern of high discordance between the two. Phylogeographic hypotheses are tested for populations of the D. quadramaculatus species complex throughout southern Appalachia by combining phylogenetic and population genetic methods with geographical information. Phylogenetic and phylogeographic inferences are then assessed in conjunction with morphological characteristics that have traditionally diagnosed taxonomic entities to understand the …

The Translator's (In)Visibility In Ann Patchett's Bel Canto, Amy Dawn Glauser
The Translator's (In)Visibility In Ann Patchett's Bel Canto, Amy Dawn Glauser
Theses and Dissertations
Transferring words and ideas from one language to another has always been a puzzling and difficult matter for those involved in it. For centuries, English-speakers and translators have dealt with these difficulties by enforcing, through professional codes of ethics and through publishing contracts, what Lawrence Venuti calls "the translator's invisibility," as chronicled in his book by the same name. By evaluating translation solely on the transparency and fluency of the target language translation (that is, by making a translation not seem like a translation), English translators and audiences assured that translators remained faithful to original authors' intents, or so they …
Calorespirometric Evidence For Adaptation Of Blackbrush And Shadscale To Growth Season Temperatures In Cold Deserts, Heidi A. Summers
Calorespirometric Evidence For Adaptation Of Blackbrush And Shadscale To Growth Season Temperatures In Cold Deserts, Heidi A. Summers
Theses and Dissertations
Coleogyne ramosissima Torr. (blackbrush) and Atriplex confertifolia [Torr. & Frem.] Wats. (shadscale) are cold desert shrubs from different families that often grow together in the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau in the life zone between 800 and 2000 m elevation. Tissue and seeds from the two species were collected from several localities. Metabolic heat and carbon dioxide production rates were measured with calorespirometry on tissue from field-grown plants and on seedlings at temperatures from 5 to 35°C at 5°C intervals. Blackbrush adapts to higher temperatures earlier than does shadscale, and once it has adjusted to higher temperatures, anabolic rates …
Optical Detection Of Ultracold Neutral Calcium Plasmas, Elizabeth Ann Cummings
Optical Detection Of Ultracold Neutral Calcium Plasmas, Elizabeth Ann Cummings
Theses and Dissertations
We demonstrate an optical method to detect calcium ions in an ultracold plasma. We probe the plasma with a 397 nm laser beam tuned to a calcium ion transition. The probe laser beam is focused to a 160 µm waist allowing fine spatial resolution. Ions are detected by measuring fluorescence using a Photo-Multiplier Tube (PMT). The signal, an average of 4000 acquisitions, has a temporal resolution of 120 ns. We present the details of this method, potential improvements, and prospects of imaging the expanding plasma ions. We also present preliminary work on spatially resolved absorption measurements, as well as additional …
Fast And Robust Incremental Action Prediction For Interactive Agents, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura
Fast And Robust Incremental Action Prediction For Interactive Agents, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura
Faculty Publications
The ability for a given agent to adapt on-line to better interact with another agent is a difficult and important problem. This problem becomes even more difficult when the agent to interact with is a human, since humans learn quickly and behave non-deterministically. In this paper we present a novel method whereby an agent can incrementally learn to predict the actions of another agent (even a human), and thereby can learn to better interact with that agent. We take a case-based approach, where the behavior of the other agent is learned in the form of state-action pairs. We generalize these …
Ancient Voyages Across The Ocean To America: From “Impossible” To “Certain”, John L. Sorenson
Ancient Voyages Across The Ocean To America: From “Impossible” To “Certain”, John L. Sorenson
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
In the past, experts have assumed that primitive sailors would have found it impossible to cross the oceans between the Old World and the New. However, John Sorenson here concludes that the evidence for transoceanic contacts now drowns out the arguments of those who have seen the New World as an isolated island until ad 1492. Sorenson’s arguments are based on evidences from Europe, Asia, and Polynesia of the diffusion of New World plants and infectious organisms. His research identifies evidence for transoceanic exchanges of 98 plant species, including tobacco and peanuts. The presence of hookworm in both the Americas …
Alma's Enemies: The Case Of The Lamanites, Amlicites, And Mysterious Amalekites, J. Christopher Conkling
Alma's Enemies: The Case Of The Lamanites, Amlicites, And Mysterious Amalekites, J. Christopher Conkling
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
In Alma 21 a new group of troublemakers is introduced—the Amalekites—without explanation or introduction. This article offers arguments that this is the same group called Amlicites elsewhere and that the confusion is caused by Oliver Cowdery’s inconsistency in spelling. If this theory is accurate, then Alma structured his narrative record more tightly and carefully than previously realized. The concept also challenges the simplicity of the good Nephite/bad Lamanite rubric so often used to describe the players in the book of Mormon.

Functional Characteristics Of Wilderness Streams Twenty Years Following Wildfire, Christopher T. Robinson, Urs Uehlinger, G. Wayne Minshall
Functional Characteristics Of Wilderness Streams Twenty Years Following Wildfire, Christopher T. Robinson, Urs Uehlinger, G. Wayne Minshall
Western North American Naturalist
We compared functional attributes of streams draining catchments burned by wildfire 20 years previously to those of streams in unburned catchments. Long-term analyses of channel profiles indicated most channel change occurred within the first 10 years after fire with little subsequent change the following 10 years. Much of the standing dead timber had fallen, and its effect on stream morphology was directly related to stream size, with important ramifications for future years as decay progresses. The volume of wood in the active channel was 5X higher in a 3rd-order burn stream than in other burn or reference streams, but >80% …
Effects Of Grazing Exclusion On Rangeland Vegetation And Soils, East Central Idaho, Jeffrey J. Yeo
Effects Of Grazing Exclusion On Rangeland Vegetation And Soils, East Central Idaho, Jeffrey J. Yeo
Western North American Naturalist
Nineteen exclosures on sagebrush steppe and shadscale rangelands, varying in age from 18 to 38 years, were sampled for plant species richness, plant composition, indicators of soil erosion, ground cover, vegetative cover, and herb–low shrub layer screening cover. Features within the exclosures were compared with adjacent sites of the same size that were open to grazing by livestock and wildlife. Species richness typically was slightly greater inside exclosures than in adjacent grazed sites (median = 2 more species inside exclosures), but the difference was not significant (P = 0.16). Similarity of plant community composition between exclosures and adjacent grazed …

Influence Of Water Size And Type On Bat Captures In The Lower Sonoran Desert, Michael J. Rabe, Steven S. Rosenstock
Influence Of Water Size And Type On Bat Captures In The Lower Sonoran Desert, Michael J. Rabe, Steven S. Rosenstock
Western North American Naturalist
We compared bat use by mist-netting at 4 different types of wildlife water developments in southwestern Arizona during summer 2000 and 2001. Scaling our results by netting effort, we caught bats more frequently and observed higher species diversity at tinajas (modified natural rock pools) with larger open-water area compared with "guzzler" type water developments that had less open water and more obstacles to bat flight. We caught the fewest bats at guzzlers with buried concrete vault drinkers, which impede bat access and have the smallest areas of open water. Water development designs that minimize evaporative water loss by reducing the …
Characterizing A First Occurrence Of Bison Deposits In Southeastern Nevada, William Gray Johnson, Saxon E. Sharpe, Thomas F. Bullard, Karen Lupo
Characterizing A First Occurrence Of Bison Deposits In Southeastern Nevada, William Gray Johnson, Saxon E. Sharpe, Thomas F. Bullard, Karen Lupo
Western North American Naturalist
Late Holocene bison bones eroding from the badlands topography of Cathedral Gorge State Park in southeastern Nevada have been identified as the remains of Bison and date between approximately 400 and 850 years old. The bones were originally thought to be turn-of-the-century cattle and then early bison, so park personnel had need to solve this interpretive problem. A multidisciplinary team sought information on archaeology, geomorphology, paleontology, and paleoenvironment to document the 1st established occurrence of bison in this part of Nevada and to develop a hypothesis explaining their demise.
Home Range And Seasonal Movements Of Columbian Sharp-Tailed Grouse Associated With Conservation Reserve Program And Mine Reclamation, Jennifer H. Boisvert, Richard W. Hoffman, Kerry P. Reese
Home Range And Seasonal Movements Of Columbian Sharp-Tailed Grouse Associated With Conservation Reserve Program And Mine Reclamation, Jennifer H. Boisvert, Richard W. Hoffman, Kerry P. Reese
Western North American Naturalist
During 1999 and 2000 we trapped and radio-marked 156 Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus) on leks in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP, n = 73) and mine reclamation (MR, n = 83) lands in northwestern Colorado. Median spring–fall home range sizes using the 95% fixed kernal and minimum convex polygon estimators for 54 grouse were 86 ha and 61 ha, respectively. Median fixed kernal home range size did not differ between males (79 ha) and females (87 ha). Home ranges of grouse associated with CRP (112 ha) were larger than those of grouse in MR (75 ha). Directional …
Effect Of Perch Sites On Mourning Dove Nest Distribution, Paul M. Meyers, Michael R. Conover, John A. Bissonette
Effect Of Perch Sites On Mourning Dove Nest Distribution, Paul M. Meyers, Michael R. Conover, John A. Bissonette
Western North American Naturalist
We examined the effect of natural and artificial perch sites on Western Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura marginella) nest density in shrubby habitat. Nest density in shrubs was strongly correlated with the density of natural perch sites. This relationship occurred in 2 vegetation types with differing shrub composition. The correlation was stronger in areas with a homogenous shrub layer. Nest density was also higher in plots with artificial perch sites than in adjacent control plots. Nest density increased between years in plots where artificial perch sites were constructed but remained the same in adjacent control plots. Knowledge of perch-site …

Spatial Analysis Of Urban Stormwater Quality
Spatial Analysis Of Urban Stormwater Quality
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Urban stormwater non-point source pollutants are recognized as a major cause of receiving waters quality deterioration. To date most research has focused on specifying temporal variations of stormwater quality parameters which includes high uncertainties and also increases the risk of pollution control structures failure. Traditionally, the temporal variations of quality parameters in forms of either pollutograph or Event Mean Concentration (EMC) is obtained by sampling stormwater at the outlet of urban catchments for quality analysis in addition to measurement of flow rate over years. Spatial variations of the runoff quality are the key factor in non-point source pollution studies. This …
