Three-Dimensional Seismic Study Of Pluton Emplacement, Offshore Northwestern New Zealand, Jason Allen Luke
Three-Dimensional Seismic Study Of Pluton Emplacement, Offshore Northwestern New Zealand, Jason Allen Luke
Theses and Dissertations
Detailed 3D seismic images of a volcano-plutonic complex offshore northwestern New Zealand indicate the intrusive complex lies in a relay zone between NE-trending en echelon normal faults. A series of high angle normal faults fan out from the margin of the Southern Intrusive Complex and cut the folded strata along the margin. These faults terminate against the margins of the intrusion, extend as much as 1 pluton diameter away from the margin, and then merge with regional faults that are part of the Northern Taranaki Graben. Offset along these faults is on the order of 10s to over 100 meters. …
Humanized Mice As A Model To Study Human Viral Pathogenesis And Novel Antiviral Drugs, Freddy Mauricio Sanchez Tumbaco
Humanized Mice As A Model To Study Human Viral Pathogenesis And Novel Antiviral Drugs, Freddy Mauricio Sanchez Tumbaco
Theses and Dissertations
Animal models have greatly contributed to the understanding of different aspects of human biology, as well as a variety of human-related pathogens and diseases. In order to study them, humanized mice susceptible to pathogens that replicate in human immune cells have been developed (e.g., humanized Rag2-/-γc-/- mice). These animals are engrafted with human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), resulting in the de novo development and maturation of the major functional components of the human adaptive immune system and the production of a variety of human cell types. Primary and secondary lymphoid organs in the mouse are populated with human cells, and …
Status Of Lost River Sucker And Shortnose Sucker, Josh E. Rasmussen
Status Of Lost River Sucker And Shortnose Sucker, Josh E. Rasmussen
Western North American Naturalist
The endangered Lost River sucker (Deltistes luxatus) and shortnose sucker (Chasmistes brevirostris) are endemic to the Upper Klamath Basin, Oregon and California. The once very abundant populations have declined drastically due to a combination of habitat loss and impairment, disruption of reproduction and gene flow, intensive harvest, and loss of entire populations. Spawning populations within Upper Klamath Lake are declining and have not had significant recruitment for over a decade. In addition to habitat loss, these populations are threatened by periodic harmful water conditions resulting from massive algal blooms and entrainment of larvae and juveniles into …
Size-Structured Spatial Patterns As A Measure Of Larval Dispersal And Emigration, Douglas F. Markle
Size-Structured Spatial Patterns As A Measure Of Larval Dispersal And Emigration, Douglas F. Markle
Western North American Naturalist
Size-structured spatial patterns in larvae of 2 sucker and 3 minnow species are described from fixed-site sampling in Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon, and are used to demonstrate patterns of size-based losses downstream and retention in the lake. The smallest larvae of shortnose suckers (Chasmistes brevirostris), Lost River suckers (Deltistes luxatus), and tui chubs (Siphateles bicolor) were least likely to be found in Lake Ewauna, a downstream catchment; yet the proportion of larger larvae downstream was often substantial, 20%–40% of a size class. In contrast, the smallest larvae of blue chubs (Klamathella coerulea) …
Effect Of Density On Growth And Survival Of Young June Sucker, Mark C. Belk, R. Cary Tuckfield
Effect Of Density On Growth And Survival Of Young June Sucker, Mark C. Belk, R. Cary Tuckfield
Western North American Naturalist
One of the fundamental determinants of survival and growth of individuals is population density. Typically, individuals exhibit negative density dependence, but positive density dependence (Allee effect) may occur. Understanding patterns of density dependence is important for conservation and management of species that have low densities as a result of recent population declines. June sucker (Chasmistes liorus) is an endangered species that was formerly abundant but now is found at low densities in Utah Lake. We tested the hypothesis that young June sucker exhibit positive density dependence (i.e., Allee effects) in growth and survival at low densities. In addition, …
Growth Of Young June Sucker (Chasmistes Liorus) Is Associated With Zooplankton Density In Utah Lake, Joshua D. Kreitzer, Eric J. Billman, Mark C. Belk, Russell B. Rader
Growth Of Young June Sucker (Chasmistes Liorus) Is Associated With Zooplankton Density In Utah Lake, Joshua D. Kreitzer, Eric J. Billman, Mark C. Belk, Russell B. Rader
Western North American Naturalist
The endangered June sucker, Chasmistes liorus, is a long-lived, zooplanktivorous sucker endemic to Utah Lake, Utah. Habitat degradation both in the tributaries, where adults spawn, and in the lake has contributed to near complete mortality of larval and juvenile fish within the first few weeks after hatching, leading to a long-term lack of recruitment to the adult population. Recovery of June sucker depends on habitat restoration in the river and the lake that will increase the survival of young fish. Thus, it is important to understand how habitat heterogeneity within the lake will influence the survival and growth of young …
Comparison Of Disturbance Impacts To And Spatial Distribution Of Biological Soil Crusts In The Little San Bernardino Mountains Of Joshua Tree National Park, California, Nicole Pietrasiak, Jeffrey R. Johansen, Tasha Ladoux, Robert C. Graham
Graham
Western North American Naturalist
Biological soil crust ecology in the hot Mojave Desert is poorly understood with regard to crust distribution and abundance, as well as the impacts of trampling disturbance on crust development. Our objective was to study biological soil crusts in 2 areas of differing disturbance pressures in the high desert region of Joshua Tree National Park, California, with respect to visible crust cover and frequency, chlorophylla, and soil stability. Impacts on biological soil crusts from 2 disturbance regimes, historic grazing and recent high foot traffic, were compared using a disturbance indicator. In addition, we measured a suite of abiotic and …

Ecology Of Unique Lentic Populations Of Roundtail Chub, Gila Robusta, Sarah M. Laske, Frank J. Rahel, Wayne A. Hubert, Peter A. Cavalli
Western North American Naturalist
Although roundtail chub (Gila robusta) is generally considered a riverine species, 6 natural lakes in the upper Green River basin, Wyoming, have resident populations of this fish. In 2 of the lakes, Halfmoon and Little Halfmoon, we investigated the ecology of resident roundtail chub, including their habitat use, diet, weight–length relationships, growth, and reproduction. Lentic roundtail chub used littoral and mid-depth benthic habitats most often, with the highest catch rates in littoral habitats. Roundtail chub were rarely caught in pelagic or deep benthic habitats. Opportunistic foraging was observed in both lakes, with roundtail chub consuming terrestrial and aquatic …
Habitat Selection By Greater Sage-Grouse During Winter In Southeastern Oregon, Christian A. Hagen, Mitchell J. Willis, Elizabeth M. Glenn, Robert G. Anthony
Habitat Selection By Greater Sage-Grouse During Winter In Southeastern Oregon, Christian A. Hagen, Mitchell J. Willis, Elizabeth M. Glenn, Robert G. Anthony
Western North American Naturalist
The distribution and geographic range of Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) have been reduced by 56% since European settlement. Although loss and fragmentation of sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) habitats have been cited as the primary causes for the decline of the species, degradation of existing habitat also has been considered an important factor. Guidelines for protection and management of breeding and winter habitat have been developed for land managers, but winter habitat use has not been thoroughly described throughout the species’ range, particularly for the western portion of its range in Oregon. We examined vegetation-type selection and use by …
Consequences Of Parasitic Mite Infestation On Muskrat (Ondatra Zibethicus), Jeffrey A. Prendergast, William E. Jensen
Consequences Of Parasitic Mite Infestation On Muskrat (Ondatra Zibethicus), Jeffrey A. Prendergast, William E. Jensen
Western North American Naturalist
Ectoparasite infestation has been implicated in increased physiological costs and reduced fitness of several animals. The semiaquatic habit of muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) restricts its ectoparasites to small mites. We assessed variation in muskrat reproductive effort and fat content in response to relative abundance of parasitic mites. There were no significant correlations between total number of placental scars, number of litters, or percent body fat and the relative abundance of ectoparasitic mites. Our results suggest that these measures of muskrat reproduction and physiology are generally unaffected by arachnid ectoparasites.
La infestación de ectoparásitos ha sido vinculada con el aumento …

Characterization And Isolation Of Five Microsatellite Loci In Northern Flying Squirrels, Glaucomys Sabrinus (Sciuridae, Rodentia), A. M. Kiesow, L. E. Wallace, H. B. Britten
Western North American Naturalist
Northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus) are found in boreal forests of northern and northwestern North America, but a small population is isolated to the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. Few microsatellite primers have been developed for this species, though they are needed to examine the genetic structure of these populations. Thus, we isolated and characterized 5 microsatellite loci in northern flying squirrels through a series of steps involving microbiology, molecular biology, and genetic techniques. Data analyses with these primers indicated that the northern flying squirrel population found in the Black Hills may have low heterozygosity and …
Diets Of Three Species Of Bufonids (Amphibia, Anura) From Northern Mexico, Geoffrey R. Smith, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal, Allison B. Burner, Kristen E. Winter, Christopher B. Dayer
Diets Of Three Species Of Bufonids (Amphibia, Anura) From Northern Mexico, Geoffrey R. Smith, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal, Allison B. Burner, Kristen E. Winter, Christopher B. Dayer
Western North American Naturalist
We examined the diets of 3 species of bufonids from northern Mexico (Anaxyrus debilis, Anaxyrus punctatus, and Incilius mazatlanensis) with the objective of better understanding the diets of amphibians in this region of Mexico, which is currently undergoing environmental change. The diet of A. debilis was numerically and volumetrically dominated by termites, followed by ants. In A. debilis, some aspects of prey size were correlated with toad head width but were not related to head length or body size (i.e., snout–vent length [SVL]). Ants were numerically the most important prey item in the diet of A. punctatus, but …

Lake Suckers In The Western Usa: History, Ecology, And Bibliography Of An Endangered Genus, Mark C. Belk, Russell B. Rader, Michael D. Mills
Western North American Naturalist
Lake suckers of the genus Chasmistes are a unique and important component of the fish assemblages of the western USA. To review recent research, discuss issues, and exchange information, researchers and managers working on the various species participated in a symposium on lake sucker biology as part of the 2010 annual meeting of the Western Division of the American Fisheries Society, held in Salt Lake City, Utah. This special feature of the Western North American Naturalist is dedicated to lake sucker ecology and natural history and provides a central venue for publication of several papers presented in the symposium. Evaluation Of Release Strategies For Captive-Reared June Sucker Based On Poststocking Survival, Eric J. Billman, Josh E. Rasmussen, Jackie Watson
Evaluation Of Release Strategies For Captive-Reared June Sucker Based On Poststocking Survival, Eric J. Billman, Josh E. Rasmussen, Jackie Watson
Western North American Naturalist
The recovery program for the endangered June sucker (Chasmistes liorus) relies on population augmentation to overcome recruitment deficits. Successful recruitment of artificially propagated individuals is affected by release timing, release size, and rearing techniques. We examined the effect of release timing and release size (total length [TL] and a relative condition factor [Wr]) on recruitment probability of hatchery-reared June sucker (Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Fisheries Experiment Station [FES]) and captive-reared June sucker (Red Butte Reservoir [RBR] refuge population) stocked across multiple years. Because source and year effects were confounded, we assessed the probability of recruitment …

The following list of books contain—as far as we have been able to ascertain—most of those books which have been written in Danish by Danish-American authors. Included in the list are those Danish authors who have written about conditions in America or which have been published by Danish American publishers. The multitudes of other Danish authors have not been included. We do not make the claim that the list is complete, it has simply been quite difficult to ensure completeness in the short time we have had available. We have not included those small publications which may have been published …
The Investiture Panel At Mari And Rituals Of Divine Kingship In The Ancient Near East, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw, Ronan James Head
The Investiture Panel At Mari And Rituals Of Divine Kingship In The Ancient Near East, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw, Ronan James Head
Studies in the Bible and Antiquity
This article explores the ancient Near Eastern rituals that endowed kings with this power, specifically the rites suggested by the Investiture Panel at the palace of Mari, with specific focus on the motifs of creation, sacred garden, and divine kingship. Because contemporary evidence at Mari relating to an interpretation of the panel and the functions of various rooms of the palace is limited, it will be necessary to rely in part on a careful comparative analysis of religious texts, images, and architecture throughout the ancient Near East, including the Old Testament. Comparative analysis not only has the benefit of increasing …
Lost And Found: Pondering The Parable Of The Prodigal Son, Robert L. Millet
Lost And Found: Pondering The Parable Of The Prodigal Son, Robert L. Millet
Studies in the Bible and Antiquity
The parable of the prodigal son is among the most beloved and consoling of the Savior’s teachings. This literary masterpiece is essentially a distillation of God’s plan of salvation, a sobering insight into human nature—men and women’s tendency to stray, their inclination toward envy, the temptation to judge unrighteously. And yet towering above the condition of the two sons—each a prodigal in his own way—is the tender revelation of the waiting father, the actual hero of the story. His capacity to love without limits, to readily forgive, and to celebrate the return of a wandering child is as stunning as …

Becoming Sons And Daughters At God's Right Hand: King Benjamin's Rhetorical Wordplay On His Own Name, Matthew L. Bowen
Becoming Sons And Daughters At God's Right Hand: King Benjamin's Rhetorical Wordplay On His Own Name, Matthew L. Bowen
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Royal sonship is a key theme of Mosiah 1–6, including King Benjamin’s seminal address at the temple in Zarahemla (Mosiah 2–5) on the occasion of his son Mosiah’s enthronement. Benjamin, however, caps this covenant sermon, not with an assertion of his son’s royal status and privileges, but with a radical declaration of his people’s royal rebirth (or adoption) as “ the children of Christ, his sons and his daughters” (Mosiah 5:7) and their potential enthronement at God’s “ right hand” (5:9). Similar to rhetorical wordplay involving proper names found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other ancient texts, …
The Apocryphal Acts Of Jesus, John Gee
The Apocryphal Acts Of Jesus, John Gee
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Numerous noncanonical accounts of Jesus’s deeds exist. While some Latter-day Saints would like to find plain and precious things in the apocryphal accounts, few are to be found. Three types of accounts deal with Jesus as a child, his mortal ministry, or after his resurrection. The Jesus of the infancy gospels does not act like the Jesus of the real gospels. The apocryphal accounts of Jesus’s ministry usually push a particular theological agenda. The accounts of Jesus’s post-resurrection teaching often contain intriguing but bizarre information. On the whole, apocryphal accounts of Jesus’s ministry probably contain less useful information for Latter-day …

Botanist In Death Valley, Stanley L. Welsh
Botanist In Death Valley, Stanley L. Welsh
Books by Faculty of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum
Abstract
This book details the author’s trips to Death Valley, along with general ecological information about the region. Explorations by other natural historians are also recounted. Death Valley and its surrounding mountain ranges are stark and appear to lack vegetative cover, but that appearance is deceiving. The ranges and valley support a great diversity of living things, both plants and animals. Pages 10–17 contain photographs of various landscapes. Pages 18–20 list the plant species collected in Death Valley, 1970–1983. Voucher specimens are available for study at Stanley L. Welsh Herbarium, Brigham Young University.
Hyperreal Blessings: Simulated Relics In The Pardoner’S Tale, Chelsea Henson
Hyperreal Blessings: Simulated Relics In The Pardoner’S Tale, Chelsea Henson
Quidditas
This article argues that reading the relics Chaucer’s Pardoner carries through the lens of Jean Baudrillard’s definition of simulacra illustrates the potential existence – and subsequent dangers – of a simulated hyperreality to the spirituality of the fourteenth century. Juxtaposing “The Pardoner’s Prologue” from The Canterbury Tales and Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation lends meaning to both the machinations of Chaucer’s (arguably) most corrupt pilgrim, and to the postmodern idea of simulated realities. Rather than doubles or imitations of an original image or conception of reality, Baudrillard’s simulacra are indistinguishable replacements for the real, as the Pardoner would have us believe …
The Cultural Context Of Nephite Apostasy, Mark Alan Wright, Brant A. Gardner
The Cultural Context Of Nephite Apostasy, Mark Alan Wright, Brant A. Gardner
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Nephite apostates turned away from true worship in consistent and predictable ways throughout the Book of Mormon. T heir beliefs and practices may have been the result of influence from the larger socioreligious context in which the Nephites lived. A Mesoamerican setting provides a plausible cultural background that explains why Nephite apostasy took the par ticular form it did and may help us gain a deeper understanding of some specific references that Nephite prophets used when com bating that apostasy. We propose that apostate Nephite religion resulted from the syncretization of certain beliefs and practices from normative Nephite religion with …
Today's Kids Need The Classics Too, Lorraine Wallace
Today's Kids Need The Classics Too, Lorraine Wallace
The Utah English Journal
It is no secret that 21st Century adolescents are reading less than their parents and grandparents did. Because modern technology has tapped into teens’ craving for color, action, and sound, books have a hard time competing with the X-box and the Wii. The “gotta have it quick and easy” attitude of today’s teens and young adults seems to make reading anything of substance, involving depth of thought or processing time, a pastime gone the way of wringer washers and push mowers.
So how do secondary English teachers who want their students to read tap into the insatiable appetite teens have …

Anticipating The Year 2000: Howard Nielson, Byu, And Statistics, Natalie J. Blades, G. Bruce Schaalje
BYU Studies
In the 1950s, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints considered creating BYU satellite campuses around the western United States and asked BYU President Ernest Wilkinson to recommend locations. At the same time, Stanford researcher Howard Nielson created a careful projection of future demand for wood in America that drew much attention. Wilkinson hired Nielson to create a projection of future growth of the Church and demand for a BYU education. Upon learning that Nielson was a member of the Church, Wilkinson invited him to join the faculty of BYU, and the BYU Department of Statistics was …
The Medical Practice Of Dr. Frederick G. Williams, Frederick G. Williams
The Medical Practice Of Dr. Frederick G. Williams, Frederick G. Williams
BYU Studies
Frederick Granger Williams (1787-1842) was a leader in the early days of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but also served as a justice of the peace, scribe, editor, and medical practitioner. In the early nineteenth century, the medical profession was in its infancy, beginning a slow shift from barbaric practices (generally bleeding and calomel) to herbal treatments that were at least mild if not particularly effective. Dr. Williams conscientiously followed the botanic methods and theories of Samuel S. Thomson, who published a book (The Thomsonian Materia Medica) and sold patents to those who read his …

Word Ways: Revisiting Ancient Greco-Latin Myths To Build Vocabulary, Jacqueline S. Thursby
The Utah English Journal
I recently assigned an old children’s tale to my senior undergraduate students called “!e Story of the Cruel Giant Barbarico, the Good Giant Benefico, and the Little Pretty Dwarf, Mignon,” written by Sarah Fielding, who lived from 1710 to1768. It was an unfamiliar story to them and written in the archaic style of 18th century English. The primary characters in the story were the giants, Barbarico and Benefico, and the sweethearts, Fidus and Amata. The names clearly reflect characteristics of the players in the story. By using root Latinate forms, Sarah Fielding foreshadowed the characters’ primary personality attributes: Barbarico (barbarous: …
Clothed With Salvation: The Garden, The Veil, Tabitha, And Christ, Daniel Belnap
Clothed With Salvation: The Garden, The Veil, Tabitha, And Christ, Daniel Belnap
Studies in the Bible and Antiquity
Because clothing has a social function by which we define ourselves in relation to others, the rites of investiture and divestiture are often used within a given community as the individual moves from one social environment to another. These two rites can be used to examine the social progression of Adam and Eve via the fall, the symbolic movement from the mortal sphere to the divine sphere as represented with the veil, as well as the Christ-like nature of Tabitha who, like Christ himself, clothed others, thus giving them meaning and place within the community of believers.
