Defining The Obvious, Or Not, Emily Furner, William Eggington Jan 2016

Defining The Obvious, Or Not, Emily Furner, William Eggington

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When a new word premieres in a publication in the English language, the word is normally followed with a definition (hereafter gloss) that defines or restates its meaning1. But generally, words will eventually stop being defined as readers come to understand the meaning of the word. In other words, when readers “accept” a word into their vocabulary, the practice of including definitions with newer words becomes unnecessary. In this study, I explored the possibility of using corpora to determine when words stop appearing with definitions, thus signaling when these new words became “accepted” into American English.

Rhesus Macaque Scar Tissue As It Relates To Aggression Rates And The Oxytocin Receptor Gene, Riley Barrington, Dee Higley Jan 2016

Rhesus Macaque Scar Tissue As It Relates To Aggression Rates And The Oxytocin Receptor Gene, Riley Barrington, Dee Higley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This research project originally started out with the purpose of correlating aggression rates in rhesus macaque monkeys with the level and type of oxytocin receptor that that monkey possessed. Blood samples were to be taken, level of scarring and wounds analyzed, and observations done to predict their average level of aggressive activity. Oxytocin has been implicated in a number of pro-attachment behaviors, including bonding with pair-mates and offspring, but has conversely been shown to increase aggressive behaviors toward those who pose a threat to either of the afore mentioned. Because Rhesus macaques are notoriously aggressive, I was interested in seeing …

Infant Aggression In Rhesus Macaques, Stephen Anderson, Dr. James Higley Jan 2016

Infant Aggression In Rhesus Macaques, Stephen Anderson, Dr. James Higley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Temperament is defined as a pattern of behaviors that remain stable and show continuity over time and across different contexts (Clarke & Boinski, 1995). These behavioral patterns can be observed early in life, and can serve as a predictor of future behaviors (Weinstein & Capitanio, 2008). Temperamental differences are largely a result of interaction effects between genetic and environmental factors. These interactions can be complex, and there is a great need to better understand the nature of those interactions (Clarke & Boinski, 1995). The purpose of this project (which is still ongoing) is to better understand the features of early …

Cultural Compromises: Effects And Perceptions Of Formal Education Among The Himba Of Namibia, Jessica Andrus, Greg Thompson Jan 2016

Cultural Compromises: Effects And Perceptions Of Formal Education Among The Himba Of Namibia, Jessica Andrus, Greg Thompson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Himba of Namibia have only recently been introduced to formal education within the past 20 years. Previously, formal education was not as readily available to them. This has led to a major cultural shift among the Himba. Traditionally, the Himba do not count, read, or speak English, but formal education is changing that. Through an ethnographic study in Otutati, Namibia, I found that the reasons the Himba are more positive towards education is because they have found ways to reconcile the traditional culture and formal education, enjoying the benefits of both lifestyles.

Studio Orchestra Club, Dallas Crane, Ron Saltmarsh Jan 2016

Studio Orchestra Club, Dallas Crane, Ron Saltmarsh

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Studio Orchestra Club was successfully initiated and its first stages of implementation were successful. We were able to accomplish the following goals:

  1. Establish Studio Orchestra Club as an Academic Association under the Commercial Music program. This lends official recognition to the group, as well as funding from the Commercial Music program (ideally, see below). This also allowed Studio Orchestra Club to schedule room usage as an independent unit, instead of relying of faculty.
  2. Record various projects, including two film scores, a graduate audition and a concept album. Link to the audio files: https://soundcloud.com/studio-orchestra-club.
  3. Create a growing roster of BYU …

Cultural Celebration And Exchange In Mongolia: An Artistic Inquiry Of Community And Tradition, Sarah Waldron, Daniel T. Barney Jan 2016

Cultural Celebration And Exchange In Mongolia: An Artistic Inquiry Of Community And Tradition, Sarah Waldron, Daniel T. Barney

Journal of Undergraduate Research

After spending time in Switzerland with Mongolian immigrants back in 2012, I became interested in their culture and heritage. I attended several events with my Mongolian friends in Switzerland, most notably a cultural event in the summer time called Naadam, or what we describe in English as the festival of three manly sports. Although their customs and traditions differ from mine, I noticed that we share many common values. I recognized in these people a familiar sensitivity to areas such as: family, pilgrimage, community, language, spirituality, and service. All of these areas correspond with my ideas, and also those promoted …

Streamlining The 3d Animation Process, Dylan Hoffman, Kelly Loosli Jan 2016

Streamlining The 3d Animation Process, Dylan Hoffman, Kelly Loosli

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I knew from the beginning that this project – centered around improving the collaborative process of making a 3D animated film across several “stages” and made by several artists of different specialties, temperaments, and backgrounds – would be two-fold. The first phase was learning more about the process itself, and how each phase related to another. The second, zoning in on an area that has been a weakness for BYU Animated Films in the past – character effects and cloth simulation. The project evolved much over the course of the year, with far more time and value being placed in …
