Current And Future Prospects Of The Biological Diversity Of Vertebrates In Teh Protected Areas Of A Megadiverse Country: Ecuador, Benjamin Bay, Dr. Jack Sites
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I collected, cleaned, and organized data on animal species in Ecuador, a megadiverse country (harbors a vast proportion of Earth’s species and is home to high numbers of endemic species). These data were crucial for a larger project which modeled the impacts of climate change on species conservation over time. I designed the algorithms that cleaned and organized these large data sets.
Defining Nkx6.1 Binding Partners In Young And Aged Pancreatic Islet, Sean Kang, Dr. Jeffery Tessem
Defining Nkx6.1 Binding Partners In Young And Aged Pancreatic Islet, Sean Kang, Dr. Jeffery Tessem
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Diabetes is an increasing epidemic that deserves more attention. Those affected by diabetes are restricted to either strict diets or remedial insulin supplementation. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are directly related to a decrease in functional β-cell mass. Exciting research has revealed Nkx6.1 to be an influential transcription factor which induces β-cell proliferation, protects against apoptosis and enhances insulin secretion when overexpressed 1 . Our recent findings indicate significant β-cell proliferation is limited to β-cells from adolescent rats, with a severe decrease in proliferation as the animal ages. 2 Nkx6.1 expression is present in every stage of development, …
Tear Analysis: High-Speed Video Capture Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear, Devon Smith, Steven Cook
Tear Analysis: High-Speed Video Capture Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear, Devon Smith, Steven Cook
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The tearing of the ACL is among one of the most common sports injuries seen during this era. Research shows that annually there are more than 80,000 documented cases of ACL tears occurring with a 15x greater possibility of re-tearing after reconstruction.1 Currently, there is no digitally filmed data on how the fiber bundles unravel during an induced ACL tear. Published studies utilize a Porcine ACL as the highest anatomically comparative model to Human ACL. We are looking to create a grade 3 ACL tear in both human and porcine ACL’s, and film them at high-speed while it unravels. We …
Development Of A Directed Forward Genetic Screen Using Crispr Libraries, Robert C. Russell, Johnathon Hill
Development Of A Directed Forward Genetic Screen Using Crispr Libraries, Robert C. Russell, Johnathon Hill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Thousands of genes control the development of our bodies. These genes must be activated at the proper place and time in order for development to proceed correctly. The technique that we are developing will improve our ability to identify such genes, thus providing insights to the mechanisms underlying development processes. One in 33 live births in the United States is impacted by a birth defect. Of these, congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common, affecting nearly 1% of births in the United States.1 For this reason, we are developing a technique that will identify key contributors in heart development.

How To Be Famous, Carlie Smith
Children's Book and Media Review
Pigeon is the most famous and most important animal at the zoo - or at least that’s what he would say! He is shown in different exhibits soaking in the limelight. In reality, people are there for the other, much more majestic creatures like elephants or crocodiles. Unfortunately, Pigeon’s cockiness and presence is quite the irritant to both people and animals. He is oblivious to their true feelings. Eventually his big-head leads him too close to a lion and he is gobbled up! This book cleverly makes the illustrations an integral part of the story. The lecture preached by Pigeon …

Development Of A Model For Adult T Cell Leukemia In Htlv-1 Infected Humanized Mice, Matthew Smith, Dr. Brad Berges
Development Of A Model For Adult T Cell Leukemia In Htlv-1 Infected Humanized Mice, Matthew Smith, Dr. Brad Berges
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Millions of people in the world are infected with human T-lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1). As the name states, this virus attacks the T cells of the infected organism. Though many of these individuals will remain asymptomatic throughout life, a small percentage will develop adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), a rare and understudied form of cancer. The latency period, or amount of time between infection and detection of cancer, is generally 20-40 years before infected patients begin developing cancer.
Mono-Associated Gnotobiotic Animal Meta-Genome Wide Association R Package, Corinne Penrod, John Chaston
Mono-Associated Gnotobiotic Animal Meta-Genome Wide Association R Package, Corinne Penrod, John Chaston
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Animal-associated bacteria fundamentally influence the normal function and behavior of their hosts, and understanding the genetic basis for these effects is an ongoing challenge. The traditional approach to understanding phenotypic effects of genes by mutant analysis is to perform a genetic screen. MAGNAMWAR is an R package that provides a simple and effective gene function predicting pipeline to be used as a faster alternative to a genetic screen. It uses meta-genome wide association (MGWA) and bacteria genotype-host phenotype relationships to predict bacterial gene function. Proven to be an effective gene predictor in work done with Drosophila melanogaster, this pipeline …

Toxoplasma Gondii Moderates The Association Between Multiple Folate-Cycle Factors And Cognitive Function In U.S. Adults, Bruce L. Brown, Andrew N. Berrett, Shawn D. Gale, Lance D. Erickson, Dawson W. Hedges
Faculty Publications
Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a microscopic, apicomplexan parasite that can infect muscle or neural tissue, including the brain, in humans. While T. gondii infection has been associated with changes in mood, behavior, and cognition, the mechanism remains unclear. Recent evidence suggests that T. gondii may harvest folate from host neural cells. Reduced folate availability is associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and cognitive decline. We hypothesized that impairment in cognitive functioning in subjects seropositive for T. gondii might be associated with a reduction of folate availability in neural cells. We analyzed data from the third …
Effect Of Speaker Age And Dialect On Listener Perceptions Of Personality, Brittni Elizabeth Bergstrom
Effect Of Speaker Age And Dialect On Listener Perceptions Of Personality, Brittni Elizabeth Bergstrom
Theses and Dissertations
The association between dialect and perceived personality traits has been studied for a number of years. The purpose of this study was to examine how the dialect, the gender of both the speaker and the listener, and the perceived age of the speaker affected the listeners' perception of the speaker's personality. The spontaneous speech samples were drawn from existing corpora. There were 48 speakers, 24 New Zealanders and 24 Utahns. Each dialect group was stratified into three age groups (young, middle, older), and within each age group there were an equal number of males and females. The listener group included …
The Effects Of Nucleosome Positioning And Chromatin Architecture On Transgene Expression, Colton E. Kempton
The Effects Of Nucleosome Positioning And Chromatin Architecture On Transgene Expression, Colton E. Kempton
Theses and Dissertations
Eukaryotes use proteins to carefully package and compact their genomes to fit into the nuclei of their individual cells. Nucleosomes are the primary level of compaction. Nucleosomes are formed when DNA wraps around an octamer of histone proteins and a nucleosome's position can limit access to genetic regulatory elements. Therefore, nucleosomes represent a basic level of gene regulation. DNA and its associated proteins, called chromatin, is usually classified as euchromatin or heterochromatin. Euchromatin is transcriptionally active with loosely packed nucleosomes while heterochromatin is condensed with tightly packed nucleosomes and is transcriptionally silent. In order to become active, heterochromatin must first …

Sedimentology And Taphonomy Of The Abydosaurus Mcintoshi Quarry, (Naturita Formation, Early Cretaceous, Latest Albian), Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, Aaron Daniel Holmes
Theses and Dissertations
The holotypic locality of the brachiosaurid titanosauriform sauropod, Abydosaurus mcintoshi, is quarry DNM-16, located in Dinosaur National Monument. The bones are preserved near the base of a heterolithic, trough cross stratified to planar bedded sandstone channel complex. The trough cross to planar bedded sandstones mark times of variable flow with times of high flow velocity based on bones whose upper surfaces were eroded before final burial. The abundance of mud with the dominant medium to fine sand, and poorly confined sandstone channels indicate the bones were transported and buried in medial to distal intermittent flows of a distributive fluvial …
Comparison Of Cytokine Expression And Bacterial Growth During Periparturient And Mid Lactation Mastitis In A Mouse Model, Rhonda Nicole Chronis
Comparison Of Cytokine Expression And Bacterial Growth During Periparturient And Mid Lactation Mastitis In A Mouse Model, Rhonda Nicole Chronis
Theses and Dissertations
Clinical cases of bovine mastitis are most severe in the early stages of lactation. The causes of this increased propensity for severe mastitis during early lactation, compared to mid and late lactation are unclear. In order to better understand the early lactation immune response to mastitis, a murine model of mastitis was employed. Intramammary inoculation of a mastitis causing Escherichia coli strain was performed in lactating mice at various stages of lactation to model the immune response seen in cows during lactation. In our experiments, mice in the early stages of lactation exhibited altered mRNA expression of cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, …
Characterization Of Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors And Their Positive Allosteric Modulators, Doris Clark Jackson
Characterization Of Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors And Their Positive Allosteric Modulators, Doris Clark Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are ligand-gated ion channels that are necessary in memory and cognition. They are pentameric and consist of α and β subunits. They are most commonly heteromeric but, can sometimes be homomeric. nAChRs are activated by many ligands including nicotine (exogenous) and acetylcholine (endogenous).nAChRs are located on hippocampal interneurons. The interneurons, although sparse, control the synchronous firing of the pyramidal cells. However, the hippocampal interneuron structure and function is quite diverse and not fully characterized. Therefore, we sought to quantify nAChR subunit mRNA levels using real-time PCR of CA1 hippocampal interneurons.Surprisingly we found that the α3 …
An Analysis Of Enabling Techniques For Highly-Accessible Low-Cost Virtual Reality Hardware In The Collaborative Engineering Design Process, Joshua Q. Coburn
An Analysis Of Enabling Techniques For Highly-Accessible Low-Cost Virtual Reality Hardware In The Collaborative Engineering Design Process, Joshua Q. Coburn
Theses and Dissertations
While there currently exists a great deal of research in the literature demonstrating various engineering applications for virtual reality (VR) and the benefits of these applications, VR adoption has been slow in part because of the high cost and resources required to setup and maintain the hardware for these applications. However, in the last 5 years, a new generation of VR hardware has emerged with cost and resource requirements which are a small fraction of previous hardware. This work begins with a survey of this newly available hardware summarizing recent advances for providing virtual input to all of the five …
Hamilton: Publics Theory, The Rhetorical Impact Of Theater And Reimagining The American Founding, Anna Sanford Low
Hamilton: Publics Theory, The Rhetorical Impact Of Theater And Reimagining The American Founding, Anna Sanford Low
Theses and Dissertations
In a time when our nation is particularly divided and confused about its identity, Hamilton, the Broadway musical created by Lin-Manuel Miranda has become an example of art's ability to unify disparate ideological, socio-economic and racial groups. The play's reception deserves study to understand how both liberals and conservatives can agree upon an interpretation of a musical that celebrates diversity in race and representation. Celebration and interpretation of the play has been so widespread that a public has emerged, furthering the influence of the play's ideas. This public is unique in a time when most people cocoon themselves in …
The Unexpected Symbol Of The New Woman: Ella Ferris Pell's Salome, Megan Ashley Snow
The Unexpected Symbol Of The New Woman: Ella Ferris Pell's Salome, Megan Ashley Snow
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues that Ella Ferris Pell's 1890 painting, Salome, provides a unique interpretation of the ideals of the New Woman, specifically in terms of reclaiming female power through Salome's confidence in her sexuality. By examining the cultural context in which Pell exhibited her painting, as well as her background as an artist, I hope bring to the light the significant ways in which Pell's Salome participates in the construction of the New Woman in late nineteenth-century culture. Since Pell was an American woman who trained and exhibited in both the United States and France, this paper explores the …

Violence, Transcendence And Spectacle In The Age Of Social Media: #Jesuischarlie Demonstrations And Hollande's Speech After The 2015 Terrorist Attacks, Barbara Luisa Desoto
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the reactions — both in real life and on social media — to two terrorist attacks in Paris: satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in January 2015 and the Bataclan shooting in November 2015. Using Richard Sennett's Fall of Public Man and Antonin Artaud's Le théâtre et son double to explore these reactions as theater, this approach reveals the religious nature of supposedly secular reactions to religious extremism.
The Rise Of The Listicle: Using Eye-Tracking And Signal Detection Theory To Measure This Growing Phenomenon, Jason Robert Freeman
The Rise Of The Listicle: Using Eye-Tracking And Signal Detection Theory To Measure This Growing Phenomenon, Jason Robert Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
As online technology continues to progress, the modes of communication through which content can be shared have exponentially grown. These include advances in navigational options for presenting information and news online. Though the listicle has been around for centuries, the internet has proliferated its growth, as content producers rely on its structure as a vehicle for sharing information. This research shows that in the case of listicles, format had no direct effect on recall, however, participants who had a greater interest in the content showed significantly higher levels of memory sensitivity. This critical finding suggests that news outlets and content …
