Cherchez La Femme! Cherchez Laura A. Janda!, Michal Korenar Jan 2018

Cherchez La Femme! Cherchez Laura A. Janda!, Michal Korenar

Russian Language Journal

In The Mohicans of Paris (1871), Dumas’s detective concludes at some point that a woman was necessarily involved in an investigated crime, leading him to famously exclaim: “Cherchez la femme!”, which is translated to English as “Look for the woman!” (Horn, 1991). One does not need to be an actual detective to reveal the purpose of the reviewed book Each Venture a New Beginning: Studies in Honor of Laura A. Janda. Needless to say, I do not want to imply in any way that Janda has committed a crime. Still, I find the expression rather apposite because the reader can …

Don't Ask Me Why, Laura Kocherhans Jan 2018

Don't Ask Me Why, Laura Kocherhans

Inscape

After a heavy workload over the holidays, we felt it was time for us to hold a work party. While a few of us had offered our homes as an optional party site, we ultimately agreed that the employee breakroom would be the easiest place for everyone to attend. Some of us arrived late, some early, as was characteristic of each of our personalities to do.

"Skin" Or "Scales" Of Blackness? Semitic Context As Interpretive Aid For 2 Nephi 4:35 (Los 5:21), Adam Oliver Stokes Jan 2018

"Skin" Or "Scales" Of Blackness? Semitic Context As Interpretive Aid For 2 Nephi 4:35 (Los 5:21), Adam Oliver Stokes

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Few verses in the Book of Mormon are as problematic and controversial as 2 Nephi 4:35 (LDS 5:21). Critics of the Book of Mormon have routinely pointed to this verse and its reference to Lamanites receiving a "skin of blackness" as evidence of racism and racist theology in Mormonism's sacred scriptures. The verse has also failed to escape ridicule in pop-cultural depictions of Mormonism, as seen most recently in the hit Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon. The verse and its interpretation are of perennial interest to readers of the Book of Mormon, believing or not, since the racial stance …

Cycles Of Memory And Circular Compassion In A Germanic Passion Diptych, Elliott Wise Jan 2018

Cycles Of Memory And Circular Compassion In A Germanic Passion Diptych, Elliott Wise

Faculty Publications

A little-known Germanic Passion diptych from the late fifteenth century—comprised of the Atlanta Christ Carrying the Cross and the Chicago Crucifixion—was recently reunited, foregrounding a complex interchange of compassionate co-suffering between the two panels. The figures of Christ and the Virgin turn and twist their eyes and faces, balancing their attention between different points of empathetic contemplation within and without the frames. As they engage with the beholder and with one another, they encourage meditation on the Holy Face of Jesus by manipulating mental images in a repetitive cycle of foresight, hindsight, and exegetical reflection.

Martin Luther, The Devil, And The True Church, Thomas Renna Jan 2018

Martin Luther, The Devil, And The True Church, Thomas Renna

Quidditas

Martin Luther refers to the Devil more than any other Reformer. Since the 1960s, historians have been more attentive to the role of Satan in his theology and polemical writings. But the place of the Evil One in Luther’s outlook goes beyond the typically medieval emphasis on the Fiend’s “private” function in tempting individual consciences. It is argued here that Luther integrated the Devil into his view of history and the two churches, the true and the false. The Reformer closely associated Satan with the persecuted church and its Catholic oppressor, as well as with the Jews, Turks, wayward Lutherans, …

The Agency Of Wives In High Medieval German Courtly Romances And Late Medieval Verse Narratives: From Hartmann Von Aue To Heinrich Kaufringer, Albrecht Classen Jan 2018

The Agency Of Wives In High Medieval German Courtly Romances And Late Medieval Verse Narratives: From Hartmann Von Aue To Heinrich Kaufringer, Albrecht Classen

Quidditas

In some secular medieval literature married life increasingly gained respect and literary traction, as illustrated by the rise of genres such as verse narratives (fabliaux, mæren, novelle, tales), early prose novels, didactic literature, and Shrovetide plays. In that world we encounter many discussions about the proper relationship between husband and wife, about the individual’s role within society, and also about economic and financial aspects that had a large impact on private life, and hence also on the gender relationship. The phenomenon of female agency within marriage, which this paper will investigate, comes to the fore in more texts than …

Combat Neuroses And The Battle Of Little Big Horn, Albert Winkler Jan 2018

Combat Neuroses And The Battle Of Little Big Horn, Albert Winkler

Faculty Publications

Combat stress first became a subject of much academic inquiry in the 20th century, but soldiers certainly suffered from mental problems in the 19th century as well as a result of battle, including the Little Big Horn. The purpose of this study is to examine how the stress of the Little Big Horn disturbed the participating trooper mentally and how these men suffered from symptoms related to combat neurosis such as panic, insanity, and irrational behavior which the men demonstrated during the battle and afterward.

The Science Of Neurobiology Of Sexual Assault Trauma And The Utah Legal System, Donna Kelly, Julie L. Valentine Jan 2018

The Science Of Neurobiology Of Sexual Assault Trauma And The Utah Legal System, Donna Kelly, Julie L. Valentine

Faculty Publications

Sexual assault triggers a cascade of physiological responses in victims, commonly referred to as the neurobiology of sexual assault trauma. Victims often report the inability to move or resist, memory loss, and loss of our altered feelings of consciousness – reactions which often negatively impact the perception of their credibility. Recently, the criminal justice system has begun to connect these normal, physiological responses in understanding common victim behaviors and responses. As knowledge of the neurobiology of sexual assault trauma disseminates throughout the criminal justice system, it is readily apparent that education, new protocols, and trauma informed interview techniques are required. …

Religious Discrimination Scale: Development And Initial Psychometric Evalutation, Kawika Allen, Kenneth T. Fuller, P. Scott Richards, Mason Ming, Han Na Suh

Faculty Publications

This study presents the development and initial psychometric evaluation of the Religious Discrimination Scale (RDS). This 11-item instrument identified three dimensions based on perceived discrimination experiences of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS): Perceived Prejudice, Closet Symptoms, and Negative Labels. The psychometric evaluations of the RDS indicated a strong and clear factor structure as well as good internal consistency reliability. The test of measurement and structural invariance across gender also suggested that the RDS scale is equally appropriate to be used with both men and women. Implications for practice and research as well as future …

The Abinadi Narrative, Redemption, And The Struggle For Nephite Identity, Daniel L. Belnap, Dan Belnap Jan 2018

The Abinadi Narrative, Redemption, And The Struggle For Nephite Identity, Daniel L. Belnap, Dan Belnap

Faculty Publications

Though there is no question that the Book of Mormon’s primary purpose is to impart an understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ, this message is generally embedded by its editors and authors in very distinct historical and political settings. This is particularly true of Mormon, who often crafted his narratives so that a given prophetic ministry intersected and interacted with the sociopolitical concerns of the contemporary Nephite population. One such concern emerging again and again in Nephite history was their identity or relationship as Israel.

"The Lord God Which Gathereth The Outcasts" (Isaiah 56:7-8), Dan Belnap, Daniel Belnap

Faculty Publications

During the last week of his ministry, Christ was asked what the great commandment was, and in his answer he suggested two, the last being “love thy neighbor as thyself ” (Mark 12:31). Though not stated by Christ, this commandment, found in Leviticus 19:18, is then followed by a similar commandment to love the stranger “as thyself ” (19:34). These two principles reflected one of the great principles of the law—the care for the marginalized outsider.1 Yet the plight of the marginalized was not only realized in the law, it was also found in the writings of the prophets. One …

Adaptive Comparative Judgment For Polytechnic Transformation: Assessment Across The Curriculum, Scott R. Bartholomew, P. E. Connolly

Faculty Publications

The authors are investigating potential applications of adaptive comparative judgment (ACJ) across numerous environments and learning scenarios within the Purdue Polytechnic Institute as part of Purdue’s efforts to transform the undergraduate learning experience. Six courses or program areas were selected for the study, involving a wide variation in subjects, subject matter, and assessment artifacts. The authors anticipate that positive results from these pilot studies will encourage broader and deeper applications of ACJ in the Purdue Polytechnic, across Purdue University, and in other academic institutions. Results from these scenarios will be disseminated in future conferences and scholarly journals.

Hygge & Lykke: Good Old Danish Enclosures Or Gates To A Brave New World?, Poul Houe Jan 2018

Hygge & Lykke: Good Old Danish Enclosures Or Gates To A Brave New World?, Poul Houe

The Bridge

every year since becoming a Danish expat some forty-five years ago, I’ve spent part of each summer in Denmark. 2017 was no exception, but unlike previous years, this time I reflected explicitly on something most Danes probably take for granted or don’t pay much attention to: their country’s global reputation as the hyggeligste and lykkeligste place on earth (although Denmark came second to Norway in the global happiness rankings in 2017).1 Denmark’s reputation as the happiest (lykkeligste) place on earth is increasingly matched by the claim that it harbors the coziest (hyggeligste) culture imaginable. Many observers and commentators have credited …

Integration Challenges And Langkær Gymnasium, Nete Schmidt Jan 2018

Integration Challenges And Langkær Gymnasium, Nete Schmidt

The Bridge

Denmark used to be a fairly homogenous country where stereotypes of homogenous Nordic-ness could be happily and easily applied. Immigrants, often seasonal farmworkers, were invariably white. A young woman named Stefania was one of the many Poles who came to Lolland-Falster in the years 1893–1929 to work in the sugar beet fields in order to send money back to her family. She was thirteen when she arrived, with fake papers. At that time, Danish farmers and squires often hired young Polish women to do the most difficult work in the fields—weeding and harvesting the sugar beets. At the time, this …

Sleep Disturbances And Depression Severity In Patients With Parkinson’S Disease, Daniel Kay, Jared J. Tanner, Dawn Bowers Jan 2018

Sleep Disturbances And Depression Severity In Patients With Parkinson’S Disease, Daniel Kay, Jared J. Tanner, Dawn Bowers

Faculty Publications

Objectives: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a multisystem movement disorder associated with sleep disturbance and depression. Sleep disturbances and depression severity share a bidirectional association. This association may be greater in individuals who are more vulnerable to the deleterious consequences of sleep disturbance and depression severity. We investigated whether the association between sleep disturbances and depression severity is greater in patients with PD than in matched controls (MC).

Materials and Methods: The study sample (N = 98) included 50 patients with idiopathic PD and 48 age-, race-, sex-, and education-matched controls. Sleep disturbances were assessed using self-reported total sleep time (TST) …

Faculty Publications

Genetic test results have important implications for close family members. Indeterminate negative results are the most common outcome of BRCA1/2 muta-tion testing. Little is known about family members' understanding of indeterminate negative BRCA1/2 test results. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to in-vestigate how daughters and sisters received and understood genetic test results as shared by their mothers or sisters. Participants included 81 women aged 40–74 with mothers or sisters previously diagnosed with breast cancer and who received inde-terminate negative BRCA1/2 test results. Participants had never been diagnosed with breast cancer nor received their own genetic testing or counseling. …

Fire Behavior In Chaparral–Evaluating Flame Models With Laboratory Data, David R. Weise, Thomas H. Fletcher, Wesley Cole, Shankar Mahalingam, Xiangyang Zhou, Lulu Sun, Jing Li

Faculty Publications

Flame and mass loss data for chaparral, a mixture of shrub plants from the Mediterranean climate zone of southwestern North America, from five previously reported experiments were used to evaluate several published models relating flame characteristics to mass loss and heat release rates. These data are unique with fuel moisture content ranging from 0.36 to 0.94 (dry basis); the study used mass loss rates which included water loss. Fit of the data to Froude number correlations developed by Albini, Byram, Nelson and Thomas and heat release rate—flame length correlations by Heskestad, Zukoski, and Yuan/Cox for axisymmetric and line fires were …

The Spark In The Powder: Iroquois Freemen Trappers In The Rocky Mountain Fur Trade, Jay H. Buckley Jan 2018

The Spark In The Powder: Iroquois Freemen Trappers In The Rocky Mountain Fur Trade, Jay H. Buckley

Faculty Publications

This article challenges Iroquoian stereotypes portrayed in existing fur trade records by contrasting the failure of the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) to integrate Iroquois and Métis trappers as successfully as the North West Company (NWC) had. The article also compares that to the successful integration and positive portrayal of Iroquois and Métis (mixed-desent) trappers within the American Rocky Mountain fur trade. Racial and economic discrimination by the HBC toward the Iroquois caused a negative impact on the financial success of the Snake Country expeditions under HBC’s Alexander Ross. Additionally, behaviors resulting from such discrimination received negative portrayals in Peter Skene …

Violence, Aggression, And Ethics: The Link Between Exposure To Human Violence And Unethical Behavior, Joshua R. Gubler, Skye Herrick, Richard Price, David A. Wood Jan 2018

Violence, Aggression, And Ethics: The Link Between Exposure To Human Violence And Unethical Behavior, Joshua R. Gubler, Skye Herrick, Richard Price, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

Can exposure to media portrayals of human violence impact an individual’s ethical decision making at work? Ethical business failures can result in enormous financial losses to individuals, businesses, and society. We study how exposure to human violence—especially through media—can cause individuals to make less ethical decisions. We present three experiments, each showing a causal link between exposure to human violence and unethical business behavior, and show this relationship is mediated by an increase in individual hostility levels as a result of exposure to violence. Using observational data, we then provide evidence suggesting that this relationship extends beyond the context of …

Does Age Structure Influence Golden-Cheeked Warbler Responses Across Areas Of High And Low Density?, Hannah L. Pruett, Ashley M. Long, Heather A. Mathewson, Michael L. Morrison Dec 2017

Does Age Structure Influence Golden-Cheeked Warbler Responses Across Areas Of High And Low Density?, Hannah L. Pruett, Ashley M. Long, Heather A. Mathewson, Michael L. Morrison

Western North American Naturalist

Age-based differentiation in the timing of avian migration can influence subsequent habitat use and, therefore, reproductive success. Over 2 breeding seasons, we compared arrival dates, pairing success, and fledging success for second-year (SY) and after-second-year (ASY) federally endangered Golden-cheeked Warblers (Setophaga chrysoparia) occupying areas of low (n = 9 sites) and high (n = 10 sites) warbler density. Male warblers arrived on low-density sites on average 6 days later (11 March) than high-density sites (5 March). Male warblers that established territories on low-density sites tended to be younger than male warblers that established territories on high-density …

Western North American Naturalist

The eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus; ECR) is highly adaptable to human activities and widely distributed across the Yucatan Peninsula. However, the eastern part of the peninsula, where the Mexican state of Quintana Roo is located, had only marginal records. Herein, we report the collection of one individual and the observation of 7 different individuals of the ECR in northeastern Quintana Roo. These records increase the range of the species by 66 km into the eastern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula. The absence of previous records of the species—even though the mammalian fauna of the region has been surveyed …
