Children's Book and Media Review
This informational text explores the defining aspects of gray wolves: they are mammals and the largest member of the wild dog family. The book also compares physical and behavioral characteristics of gray wolves with other animals such as coyotes and African lions. Gray wolves live in remote portions of the North Hemisphere, and the book discusses their habitat and their interaction with humans. Finally, the author explores the life cycle of gray wolves while comparing and contrasting it with other mammalian species, such as the dwarf mongoose and snowshoe hare.

Safe In A Storm, Oliva Hales
Safe In A Storm, Oliva Hales
Children's Book and Media Review
Safe in a Storm tells the story of several animal families as both parents and their young find shelter from the storm. The story is told in thirteen rhyming couplets that offer reassurance to young animals (and young readers). The audience is first introduced to a mother sheepdog and her pup hurrying home in the face of a rumbling storm. After that, the lens continues on to sweep across various geographies and introduces such animals as ducks, whales, giraffes, and bobcats among others. A full circle is accomplished by the last page where we see the mother sheepdog and her …

Argentine Ant (Linepithema Humile, Mayr) Eradication Efforts On San Clemente Island, California, Usa, Korie C. Merrill, Christina L. Boser, Cause Hanna, David A. Holway, Ida Naughton, Dong-Hwan Choe, Erin E. Wilson Rankin
Western North American Naturalist
The Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Mayr), is a highly invasive ant species that has spread into urban, agricultural, and natural areas worldwide. The pervasive expansion of this species is detrimental both ecologically and economically, resulting in the allocation of vast amounts of resources for control. New efforts are underway to control the Argentine ant in ecologically sensitive habitats, such as those on the California Channel Islands. We tested the efficacy of thiamethoxam liquid bait at a concentration of 6 ppm on San Clemente Island, California, where the Argentine ant has spread into natural areas hosting protected endemic species. Applied by …

On the basis of 86 photographic records, we report the presence of a relatively stable collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) population in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. These records complement geographical and ecological information for the species along the Gulf of Mexico. The species’ predominant habitat is submontane scrub, which corresponded to 54.6% of the records. Family groups (herds) were observed with 3.9 ± 2.9 (mean ± SD) individuals on average. The presence of young indicated 2 reproductive periods per year (March and August). The presence of collared peccaries in the region of greatest biological diversity in Guanajuato provides …
Range Expansion And Parasitism In The Nonnative Snail Radix Auricularia, Michele D. Larson
Range Expansion And Parasitism In The Nonnative Snail Radix Auricularia, Michele D. Larson
Western North American Naturalist
The nonnative snail Radix auricularia was found at 4 previously unknown locations in Wyoming. At Two Ocean Lake in Grand Teton National Park, R. auricularia was found with trematode infections that were the same cercarial type found in native snails during the same sampling period. Although finding parasitic infections in a nonnative species challenges the enemy release hypothesis, the presence of trematodes in R. auricularia may act to suppress population growth of this snail, thereby emolliating the negative impact this snail may have on native populations. Further research assessing the prevalence of trematode parasites in R. auricularia would aid in …

Does Body Size Affect Fitness The Same Way In Males And Females? A Test Of Multiple Fitness Components, Ashlee N. Smith, Mark C. Belk
Does Body Size Affect Fitness The Same Way In Males And Females? A Test Of Multiple Fitness Components, Ashlee N. Smith, Mark C. Belk
Faculty Publications
Body size generally has an important relationship with fitness, whereby larger body size leads to an increase in fitness through competition, reproductive output and survivorship. However, the traits through which body size increases fitness often differ between the sexes. We tested for the effects of body size on fitness in both sexes using three separate experiments on competitive ability, reproductive output and starvation resistance in the burying beetle Nicrophorus marginatus. Results varied between sexes as follows: (1) larger body size increased competitive ability differentially between sexes; (2) female body size, but not male body size, significantly affected reproductive output …
Stability And Change In Kelp Forest Habitats At San Nicolas Island, Michael C. Kenner, M. Tim Tinker
Stability And Change In Kelp Forest Habitats At San Nicolas Island, Michael C. Kenner, M. Tim Tinker
Western North American Naturalist
Kelp forest communities are highly variable over space and time. Despite this complexity it has been suggested that kelp forest communities can be classified into one of 2 states: kelp dominated or sea urchin dominated. It has been further hypothesized that these represent “alternate stable states” because a site can remain in either of these states for decades before some perturbation causes a rapid shift to the other state. Our research group has maintained a subtidal community monitoring program for 38 years at San Nicolas Island consisting of twice-annual scuba-based surveys at 6 sites distributed within 4 regions around the …
Estimates Of Habitat Use By Rabbits (Sylvilagus Spp.) From Fecal Pellet Counts Varies By Plot Design In Southern California, Sean P. Dunagan, Tim J. Karels
Estimates Of Habitat Use By Rabbits (Sylvilagus Spp.) From Fecal Pellet Counts Varies By Plot Design In Southern California, Sean P. Dunagan, Tim J. Karels
Western North American Naturalist
Studies of rabbits and hares often use fecal pellet counts to estimate population density, create indices of abundance, and monitor habitat use, because fecal pellet counts are more easily deployed and less labor intensive than visual surveys and live trapping. In some habitats, plot size and shape can affect the measured pellet density and the resulting estimates of habitat use by rabbits. We compared rabbit (Sylvilagus spp.) fecal pellet density estimates derived from 0.155-m2 rectangular, 0.155-m2 circular, 1-m2 square, and 1-m2 circular plots in southern California chaparral and coastal sage scrub communities to evaluate habitat …
Workplace Social Skills For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Single-Subject Community-Based Intervention, Haley Anne Thomas
Workplace Social Skills For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Single-Subject Community-Based Intervention, Haley Anne Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Since socialization deficits are the primary characteristic of autism spectrum disorder, attaining and maintaining employment in adulthood can prove to be problematic. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a nine-week program designed to teach workplace social skills to young adults with autism in a community setting. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze outcomes. Quantitative methods consisted of live observational behavioral coding. Qualitative measures used written intake and discharge reports, obtained from the program's coordinators, to analyze their perceptions of pre-intervention goals and post-intervention outcomes and remaining barriers related to social skills. Overall outcomes suggest the program does …
Molecular Evolution Of Odonata Opsins, Odonata Phylogenomics And Detection Of False Positive Sequence Homology Using Machine Learning, Anton Suvorov
Molecular Evolution Of Odonata Opsins, Odonata Phylogenomics And Detection Of False Positive Sequence Homology Using Machine Learning, Anton Suvorov
Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation comprises three related topics of evolutionary and computational biology, which correspond to the three Chapters. Chapter 1 focuses on tempo and mode of evolution in visual genes, namely opsins, via duplication events and subsequent molecular adaptation in Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies). Gene duplication plays a central role in adaptation to novel environments by providing new genetic material for functional divergence and evolution of biological complexity. Odonata have the largest opsin repertoire of any insect currently known. In particular our results suggest that both the blue sensitive (BS) and long-wave sensitive (LWS) opsin classes were subjected to strong positive …
An Early Childhood Expository Comprehension Measure: A Look At Validity, Marybeth Fillerup Robertson
An Early Childhood Expository Comprehension Measure: A Look At Validity, Marybeth Fillerup Robertson
Theses and Dissertations
Many have argued for more informational text to be incorporated into the curriculum, even in the earliest grades. However, it has traditionally been thought that narrative text should precede informational text when introducing children to literacy. Still several studies have demonstrated that preschool children are capable of learning from these texts. Because informational texts are being introduced even in the earliest grades, preschool teachers are in need of ways to assess their students' ability to handle early forms of informational texts. The Early Expository Text Comprehension Assessment (EECA) was developed to help teachers understand the comprehension abilities of their preschool …
An Annunciation For A Secular Age: The Struggle For Faith In Mary Szybist's Incarnadine, Devin Morgan Theurer
An Annunciation For A Secular Age: The Struggle For Faith In Mary Szybist's Incarnadine, Devin Morgan Theurer
Theses and Dissertations
Mary Szybist's 2013 collection, Incarnadine, uses the Annunciation as a foundational narrative through which to examine the implications of faith and having a relationship with God. Transforming this pivotal Biblical event through metaphor, intertextuality, and different points of view, Szybist showcases what Charles Taylor terms "fragilization" of faith, or the contestable and dubious position of believing among plurality of belief and nonbelief. By repeatedly shifting the framing of the Annunciation, Szybist creates several different visions of who God is. Rather than reinterpreting the Annunciation with a new dictum on exactly who God is and what it means to believe …
How Are U.S. Startups Using Instagram? An Application Of Taylor's Six-Segment Message Strategy Wheel And Analysis Of Image Features, Functions, And Appeals, Robert David Jenkins
How Are U.S. Startups Using Instagram? An Application Of Taylor's Six-Segment Message Strategy Wheel And Analysis Of Image Features, Functions, And Appeals, Robert David Jenkins
Theses and Dissertations
Social media and their accompanying smartphone apps have opened brands to consumers in unprecedented ways. Of these sites, none, with the exception of Facebook, are more popular than Instagram, a social networking app that is image-centric and image-driven. As a free platform for potentially reaching, attracting, and engaging with millions of consumers, Instagram offers brands an unprecedented avenue for free advertising—all on a relatively level playing field. This means that brands, even startups, have the same access to potential followers as larger, more established brands. This advertising is more fluid, more frequent, and more inconspicuous than traditional advertisements; e.g., magazine …
Waveguide-Based Spatial Light Modulators For Use In Holographic Video Displays, Kamran Qaderi
Waveguide-Based Spatial Light Modulators For Use In Holographic Video Displays, Kamran Qaderi
Theses and Dissertations
Film display holograms typically diffract light over a wide enough view-angle to be viewed, directly, without intervening optics. However, all holographic video displays must use optics beyond the hologram surface to overcome the challenges of small display extent and low diffraction angle by using some form of demagnification and derotation. We report a leaky mode waveg- uide spatial light modulator (SLM) with sufficiently high angular diffraction to obviate the need for demagnification in scanned aperture systems. This was achieved by performing a number of experiments to determine the depth of the annealed, proton-exchanged waveguide which corresponded to a maximized diffracted …
Stagnant Supers: Amplifying The Superhero Genre Through Novelistic Maturity, Ariel Elizabeth Hubbard
Stagnant Supers: Amplifying The Superhero Genre Through Novelistic Maturity, Ariel Elizabeth Hubbard
Theses and Dissertations
Few superhero scholars, if any, are discussing physical age or definitions of maturity. It seems Hollywood and consumers are reluctant to associate "adult" content with anything other than pornography, immature language, and excessive violence—a reluctance that should be explored by scholars and critics alike. Most superhero characters only reflect the insecurities of audiences who are currently undergoing the transition between adolescence and young adulthood. There are very few older, middle-aged, or retired superheroes depicted juggling the demands of a family along with their daring rescues. It is possible that superhero films could continue to enjoy longer, lasting success if they …
Discovery Of Possible Paleotsunami Deposits In Pangandaran And Adipala, Java, Indonesia Using Grain Size, Xrd, And 14C Analyses, Kevin L. Stuart
Discovery Of Possible Paleotsunami Deposits In Pangandaran And Adipala, Java, Indonesia Using Grain Size, Xrd, And 14C Analyses, Kevin L. Stuart
Theses and Dissertations
Grain size, 14C age, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of sediments indicate possible tsunami deposits on the southern coast of Java near Pangandaran and Adipala. Previous studies that have described known recent and paleotsunami deposits were used for comparison. Fining-upward grain size trends, interbedded sand and mud, sediment composition, and trends in heavy mineral abundances are among the characteristics used for tsunami deposit identification. At Batu Kalde, an archaeological site south of Pangandaran, a layer of aragonitic sand with marine fossils was found atop a layer of archaeological fragments at an elevation of ~2-5 m. It is likely this …
The Queen Of Aquatics:The 1849 Display Of The Victoria Regia Water Lily As Imperial Theatre, Katie Maurine Jarvis
The Queen Of Aquatics:The 1849 Display Of The Victoria Regia Water Lily As Imperial Theatre, Katie Maurine Jarvis
Theses and Dissertations
The Victoria regia was discovered in British Guiana in 1837, and for over ten years explorers and scientists tried different methods to transport viable seeds back to England. When the seeds were finally on British soil, no one could grow them successfully except Joseph Paxton, the head gardener for the Duke of Devonshire. Paxton built a special glass house at Chatsworth estate to mimic the tropical climate the Amazonian lily required, and created an innovative tank that was heated with coal and fitted with an apparatus to gently keep the water moving, replicating freshwater rivers. The œvegetable wonder, as it …
