The Uncanny Mind: Perpetrator Trauma In Poe’S “The Black Cat”, Bethanie Allyson Sonnefeld Mar 2019

The Uncanny Mind: Perpetrator Trauma In Poe’S “The Black Cat”, Bethanie Allyson Sonnefeld

Theses and Dissertations

Among the psychological interpretations of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat,” trauma theory has yet to make an appearance. However, the confessional nature of the story shifts—via a trauma reading—from an attempt by the narrator to ease his guilt to his attempt to understand what happened to him. The narrator’s murder of his wife traumatized him, causing erasures in the timeline and several forms of dissociation. These erasures and dissociations cause an uncanny effect within the story, which occurs as the past, present, and future are conflated and as the narrator’s mind is both known and hidden. The narrator’s tale …

Interactions Between The Organellar Pol1a, Pol1b, And Twinkle Dna Replication Proteins And Their Role In Plant Organelle Dna Replication, Stewart Anthony Morley Mar 2019

Interactions Between The Organellar Pol1a, Pol1b, And Twinkle Dna Replication Proteins And Their Role In Plant Organelle Dna Replication, Stewart Anthony Morley

Theses and Dissertations

Plants maintain organelle genomes that are descended from ancient microbes. Ages ago, these ancient microbes were engulfed by larger cells, beginning a process of co-evolution we now call the endo-symbiotic theory. Over time, DNA from the engulfed microbe was transferred to the genome of the larger engulfing cell, eventually losing the ability to be free-living, and establishing a permanent residency in the larger cell. Similarly, the larger cell came to rely so much on the microbe it had engulfed, that it too lost its ability to survive without it. Thus, mitochondria and plastids were born. Nearly all multicellular eukaryotes possess …

Navigating Palimpsest’S Sea Garden: H.D.’S Spiritual Realism, Mari Anne Murdock Mar 2019

Navigating Palimpsest’S Sea Garden: H.D.’S Spiritual Realism, Mari Anne Murdock

Theses and Dissertations

H.D.’s novel Palimpsest has often been analyzed using psychoanalytic theories due to her relationship with Sigmund Freud and his work. However, her own approach to the science of psychoanalysis reveals that she often complemented her scientific understanding with her syncretic religious beliefs, a perspective she referred to as “spiritual realism,” which suggests that analysis with a spiritual nuance may provide a deeper understanding of the novel’s intended purpose. Postsecular theory makes for a useful lens by which to analyze Palimpsest’s treatment of reintegrating spiritual knowledge into Freud’s secular understanding of the modern world by providing the benefits of such a …

Cross-Culture Research: Comparison Between Chinese And American Art Education, Ye Liang Mar 2019

Cross-Culture Research: Comparison Between Chinese And American Art Education, Ye Liang

Theses and Dissertations

Education systems in China and the United States are very different. Chinese educator Hong Wang compared the two education systems and came to a conclusion: Chinese education wins in the starting point, while American education wins in the end point (Cheng, 2014). Chinese students learn more things, take challenging courses, and do well in academic accomplishment. However, examination-oriented methods in the Chinese education system may kill students’ interest in learning. Even though Chinese students learned fast in the starting points, they failed in the terminal points as they lost their interest in learning (Chen, 2014). Many educators and scholars think …

Diet For A Changing Climate: Food For Thought, Emilee Bell Feb 2019

Diet For A Changing Climate: Food For Thought, Emilee Bell

Children's Book and Media Review

As the world faces crises of hunger as well as environmental disaster, the authors claim one of the most impactful ways to avert total disaster is to take “eat local” to the extreme. Sidewalk cracks, boat hulls, and abandoned lots are the “foragermarkets” of the future. As incredible as it sounds, Mihaly and Heavenrich stand solidly on science and history: wild food sources, while uncomfortable to the modern eater, are packed with nutrients only whiffed in groceries today. Styled for the middle-grade reader, Mihaly and Heavenrich include legal alerts, safety tips, and even recipes to guide students on the path …

A Qualitative Study Of Ramadan: A Month Of Fasting, Family, And Faith, Zahra Alghafli, Trevan Hatch, Andrew H. Rose, Mona M. Abo-Zena, Loren Dean Marks

Faculty Publications

Islam is a major world religion and the Muslim population is one of the fastest growing religious populations in the Western world, including in the United States. However, few research studies have examined the lived religious experience of U.S. Muslim families. Much of the attention on Islam among researchers and the media tends to be on controversial aspects of the religion. The purpose of this paper is to examine the unique religious practice of the month-long fast of Ramadan, especially its perceived role on marital and familial relationships from an insider’s perspective. Content analysis of in-depth, qualitative interviews of twenty …

Beyond Religious Rigidities: Religious Firmness And Religious Flexibility As Complementary Loyalties In Faith Transmission, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Kate P. Babcock, Betsy H. Barrow, Andrew H. Rose Feb 2019

Beyond Religious Rigidities: Religious Firmness And Religious Flexibility As Complementary Loyalties In Faith Transmission, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Kate P. Babcock, Betsy H. Barrow, Andrew H. Rose

Research has found that intergenerational transmission of religiosity results in higher family functioning and improved family relationships. Yet the Pew Research Center found that 44% of Americans reported that they had left the religious affiliation of their childhood. And 78% of the expanding group of those who identify as religiously unaffiliated (“Nones”) reported that they were raised in “highly religious families.” We suggest that this may be, in part, associated with religious parents exercising excessive firmness with inadequate flexibility (rigidity). We used a multiphase, systematic, team-based process to code 8000+ pages of in-depth interviews from 198 Christian, Jewish, and Muslim …

Emergence Of Collective Behaviors In Hub-Based Colonies Using Grammatical Evolution And Behavior Trees, Aadesh Neupane Feb 2019

Emergence Of Collective Behaviors In Hub-Based Colonies Using Grammatical Evolution And Behavior Trees, Aadesh Neupane

Theses and Dissertations

Animals such as bees, ants, birds, fish, and others are able to efficiently perform complex coordinated tasks like foraging, nest-selection, flocking and escaping predators without centralized control or coordination. These complex collective behaviors are the result of emergence. Conventionally, mimicking these collective behaviors with robots requires researchers to study actual behaviors, derive mathematical models, and implement these models as algorithms. Since the conventional approach is very time consuming and cumbersome, this thesis uses an emergence-based method for the efficient evolution of collective behaviors. Our method, Grammatical Evolution algorithm for Evolution of Swarm bEhaviors (GEESE), is based on Grammatical Evolution (GE) …

"I Dare Not Venture A Judgement”: Spirituality And The Postsecular In Hogg’S Confessions, Conor Bruce Hilton Feb 2019

"I Dare Not Venture A Judgement”: Spirituality And The Postsecular In Hogg’S Confessions, Conor Bruce Hilton

Theses and Dissertations

Reading James Hogg’s 1824 novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner through a postsecular lens provides a new framework for spirituality. This framework establishes spirituality as a place of tension and uncertainty between the text’s main ideologies—Enlightenment rationality and religious, specifically Calvinist, fanaticism. The text explores this place of tension through its doubled narrative structure and by demonstrating the crisis of faith that the fictional Editor of the text undergoes. Confessions brings a compelling new paradigm to discussions of the postsecular that allows insight into the complex intersections of Enlightenment rationality and empiricism as well as religious …

Effects Of Substrate On Movement Patterns And Behavior Of Stream Fish Through Culverts: An Experimental Approach, Kyla Johnson, Lindsay E. Wait, Suzanne K. Monk, Russell Rader, Rollin H. Hotchkiss, Mark C. Belk Jan 2019

Effects Of Substrate On Movement Patterns And Behavior Of Stream Fish Through Culverts: An Experimental Approach, Kyla Johnson, Lindsay E. Wait, Suzanne K. Monk, Russell Rader, Rollin H. Hotchkiss, Mark C. Belk

Faculty Publications

Culverts can provide a significant barrier to fish passage by fragmenting fish habitats and impeding the passage success of small-bodied fish. Geographical connectivity is critical to the maintenance of diverse fish assemblages. Culverts with high cross-sectional velocity can cause population fragmentation by impeding passage of small, freshwater fish. Behavioral responses of small fish to high velocities can differ among functional groups, and swimming behavior of many species is not well known. We tested effects of substrate type on swimming behavior in two small, freshwater fish species—southern leatherside chub (Lepidomeda aliciae, a midwater species), and longnose dace (Rhinichthys …

Parents As The First And Foremost Teachers, Megan Northrup, Craig H. Hart, Stephen F. Duncan

Forever Families

The Family: A Proclamation to the World states that "parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness" (¶ 6). Many of today's scholars support this statement. Family science and child development researchers everywhere are emphatic that good parenting is vital. From the earliest preschool years, the way parents teach and rear their children is critical to their children's development throughout life.
