Meet My Family: Animal Babies And Their Families, Sydnee Burr Apr 2019

Meet My Family: Animal Babies And Their Families, Sydnee Burr

Children's Book and Media Review

Meet My Family explores a large variety of baby animals and their families. Coleman's illustrations are the star of the show, as each baby animal and their parents are both interesting and adorable. While being both informative and entertaining in nature, the animals seem to have been chosen specifically to represent specific family dynamics. For example, raccoon's have never met their father, orangutans don't have a steady home, and Chinstrap Penguins have two dads.

Or that the wandering albatross has the largest wingspan of any modern bird? The book puts a special spotlight on conservation efforts being made to protect these birds, many of which are endangered.

If Polar Bears Disappeared, Nan Rao Apr 2019

If Polar Bears Disappeared, Nan Rao

Children's Book and Media Review

The book begins with an introduction of the arctic ecosystem, and then focuses on the polar bears that have become the symbol of the geographic region. The narrative continues with the catastrophic effects of climate change and hypothesizes the downstream consequences. What may originate as the extinction of one species will disrupt the entire ecosystem, leading to disappearances of other animals and drastically altering landscapes for the worse. Though this process is already underway, there is still time for the reader to help prevent further damage through education, research and adjusting our lifestyles to save the environment.

A Crispr/Cas9 Tissue Specific Forward Genetic Screening Method In Danio Rerio, Joshua Don Yates Apr 2019

A Crispr/Cas9 Tissue Specific Forward Genetic Screening Method In Danio Rerio, Joshua Don Yates

Theses and Dissertations

Many of the cutting-edge innovations on the CRISPR/Cas9 system involve the use of complex sgRNA libraries. For example, such libraries have recently been used in functional genomics applications to screen for specific genes in both cell lines and living organisms, as well as in subcellular imaging to fluorescently label chromatin in living cells. However, chemically synthesizing customized libraries can be cost prohibitive, requires precise genomic information, and can takes several weeks. We developed a rapid and efficient enzymatic method to generate sgRNA libraries from arbitrary DNA substrates, significantly reducing the cost of library generation. A type IIS restriction enzyme binding …

Germination And Growth Of Grass Species In Soil Contaminated By Drill Cuttings, Huisen Zhu, Yang Gao, Deying Li Apr 2019

Germination And Growth Of Grass Species In Soil Contaminated By Drill Cuttings, Huisen Zhu, Yang Gao, Deying Li

Western North American Naturalist

Grass species are important for phytoremediation on native prairies affected by petroleum oil production. One of the major limitations in remediation and reclamation using plant species is seed germination failure. The objective of this study was to evaluate grass seed germination and seedling growth affected by drill cuttings. Sixty-five grass species (including 5 cereal crops) were included in the study. Germination of all species was reduced by drill cuttings. The reduction in germination ranged from 9.2% to 100%. Two species were tolerant, 18 species were moderately tolerant, 27 species were moderately sensitive, and 18 species were sensitive. Based on tolerance …

Rod Tip Up!, Clark S. Monson Apr 2019

Rod Tip Up!, Clark S. Monson

BYU Studies

The figure of a well-known and beloved fisherman is missing from the Provo River. When I turn off U.S. Highway 189 in Provo Canyon, Utah, and cross the bridge to enter Vivian Park, I look upstream and downstream for him, but he isn’t there. A few feet past the bridge, I cross a familiar double bump in the road—the tracks of the Heber Valley Railroad—but no person I might see walking along the weathered railroad ties walks with a stride I recognize. Sometimes I see numerous fishermen on the river, but they’re outfitted in modern gear—GORE-TEX waders, rubber mesh nets, …

Scripture Note: “Pointing Our Souls To Him”, Matthew L. Bowen Apr 2019

Scripture Note: “Pointing Our Souls To Him”, Matthew L. Bowen

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

When the King James translators rendered the biblical Hebrew word tôrâ (often transliterated Torah) into English, they almost always did so using the Anglo-Norman word “law” (< Old English lagu1 < Old Norse lög2/*lagu). The 1830 translation of the Book of Mormon into English appears to have followed that approach. However, the Book of Mormon’s ancient authors, in several instances, also exhibit a conception of “law” consistent with the most basic sense of tôrâ in Hebrew and in so doing, they reveal an important function of divine “law” as it relates to the divine Lawgiver

In China's Vanguard Civilization: Is There Shelter For The Third World?, Tseggai Isaac Apr 2019

In China's Vanguard Civilization: Is There Shelter For The Third World?, Tseggai Isaac

Comparative Civilizations Review

This paper looks at China’s civilizational and modernization heritages. Its ancient civilization is described as the first phase of China’s civilization. In the first phase, China’s Civilization was stellar, and creative, possessing well–structured bureaucratic institutions with phenomenal capacities for artistic production and the advancement of high sciences. The second phase of China’s civilization reflects its current modernization, one inspired and operationalized by Marxism and Maoism. The earlier phase of China’s Civilization was aloof, benign, self-sufficient, reticent and reluctant to attract untoward global attention. This ancient civilization, rooted in the organic soil of China itself, was holistic, robust on its own …

The Effects Of Dixie Harrow Treatments On Greater Sage-Grouse Resource Selection And The Nutritional Value Of Sagebrush During Winter, Jason Alan Wood Apr 2019

The Effects Of Dixie Harrow Treatments On Greater Sage-Grouse Resource Selection And The Nutritional Value Of Sagebrush During Winter, Jason Alan Wood

Theses and Dissertations

Sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) is an important source of food and cover for many animals, especially during winter months. Understanding how wildlife species respond to sagebrush management actions can help improve conservation planning. Dixie harrow is a method of improving spring/summer habitat for many herbivores by reducing sagebrush cover to stimulate the growth of grasses and forbs. These treatments, however, may influence the quantity and quality of sagebrush available to greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter, sage-grouse) during winter. We evaluated the effects of Dixie harrow on sage-grouse resource selection during winter (Chapter 1) and on the nutritional value of sagebrush (Chapter …

A Polymorphic Approach To Esports Betting, Chadohl Kang Apr 2019

A Polymorphic Approach To Esports Betting, Chadohl Kang

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

With the Supreme Court ruling in Murphy v. NCAA, states can legalize sports betting. Many states have chosen to do so. Unfortunately, it is still unclear whether electronic sports, or Esports, is included in the legislations. This is due in part to society not seeing Esports as a true sport. For a growing, nearly billion dollar industry, this isn’t good news. The polymorphic approach can be a resolution to this situation. The polymorphic approach to sports allows states to decide if it is in their interest to view Esports as a sport in betting legislation. Based on the possible revenue …

Teaching Conversation Skills To Adults With Developmental Disabilities Using A Video-Based Intervention Package, Kaitlyn Rayne Osborne

Theses and Dissertations

Social skills deficits may hinder learning, terminate relationships, and impede employment. Individuals with autism and intellectual disability are often characterized with difficulties in social judgement, emotions, and interpersonal relationships, all of which can lead to disruptive and aggressive behaviors. Explicit instruction, video modeling, and video feedback are research-based practices that have been used to teach conversation skills to individuals, particularly children with developmental disabilities and social impairments. This study examined the effects of explicit instruction combined with video modeling and video feedback in teaching six adults ages 18-20 with autism and intellectual disability skills for initiating a conversation. A multiple …

Multispecies Character Displacement In Mexican Poeciliopsis Fishes, Andrea J. Roth Apr 2019

Multispecies Character Displacement In Mexican Poeciliopsis Fishes, Andrea J. Roth

Theses and Dissertations

Competition has long been recognized as a central force in shaping evolution, particularly through character displacement. Yet research on character displacement is biased as it has focused almost exclusively on pairs of interacting species while ignoring multispecies interactions. Unfortunately, communities are seldom so simple that only pairs of species interact, and it is not clear if inferences from pairwise interactions are sufficient to explain patterns in nature. A more realistic approach is to ask how traits evolve when multiple species interact. Here I explore the importance of multispecies competitive interactions on trait evolution in four congeneric species of livebearing fishes …

Modeling Subglottic Stenosis Effects On Phonation Threshold Pressure In The Porcine Larynx, Jessica Maryn Murphey Apr 2019

Modeling Subglottic Stenosis Effects On Phonation Threshold Pressure In The Porcine Larynx, Jessica Maryn Murphey

Theses and Dissertations

Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a narrowing of the airway below the vocal folds and above the trachea. This narrowing may be idiopathic or caused by scarring in the airway due to prolonged endotracheal intubation, radiation therapy, trauma, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. People who present with SGS often experience respiratory difficulty both at rest and during exertion. Breathing difficulty increases with stenosis severity. SGS is also associated with voice problems. Research has identified relationships among stenosis severity, voice function and certain types of surgical management; however, many aspects of these relationships are not fully understood due to the complexities of studying …
