Leaf Fiber Strength And Fruit Nutrient Content Of Yucca Species Native To The Navajo Nation, Anna Therese Bartlett
Leaf Fiber Strength And Fruit Nutrient Content Of Yucca Species Native To The Navajo Nation, Anna Therese Bartlett
Theses and Dissertations
The strength of leaf fibers and the nutritional value of the edible fruit of several yucca species native to the U.S. southwest were studied to aid in the determination of species best suited for commercial cultivation by the Navajo Nation. The leaves were softened in an autoclave to facilitate the removal of the leaf matrix, conditioned in environmentally controlled chambers, and the fibers were broken using a texture analyzer. The fibers were frozen and cross sectioned and photographed to determine cross sectional area. Official methods were used to determine the nutritional content of the fruit. The mean tensile strength of …
Amphibious Entrepreneurs And The Origins Of Invention, Kurt Sandholtz, Walter W. Powell
Amphibious Entrepreneurs And The Origins Of Invention, Kurt Sandholtz, Walter W. Powell
Faculty Publications
In this chapter, we examine entrepreneurs who carry ideas, technologies, values, and assumptions between previously unrelated spheres of economic or cultural activity, and in the process, change the existing order of things. We label such individuals amphibious entrepreneurs and explore their characteristics via four case studies. Their stories suggest a distinct species within the genus of entrepreneur: more pragmatic than heroic, and as likely to invent by not knowing any better as by calculative creation. We discuss their role in creating interstitial spaces, contrast them to other boundary-spanning actors, and identify directions for future research at the intersection of social …

A Comparison Of Diurnal Resting Sites Used By Sylvilagus Audubonii And Lepus Californicus In The Chihuahuan Desert, Robert L. Harrison
A Comparison Of Diurnal Resting Sites Used By Sylvilagus Audubonii And Lepus Californicus In The Chihuahuan Desert, Robert L. Harrison
Western North American Naturalist
Sylvilagus audubonii (desert cottontail) and Lepus californicus (black-tailed jackrabbit) occur in sympatry in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. During the daytime, both species occupy shallow excavations under shrubs known as forms. Comparisons of form and shrub characteristics between the 2 species can provide insights into connections between body size, physiology, and behavior. I examined forms of the 2 species in the Chihuahuan Desert in southern New Mexico, USA, from 2014 to 2016. In response to temperature, S. audubonii varied the structure of its forms and dug burrows, whereas L. californicus did not. Sylvilagus audubonii forms were most commonly …
Effects Of Broadcasting Calls On Detection Probability In Occupancy Analyses Of Multiple Raptor Species, Jeremy A. Baumgardt, Michael L. Morrison, Leonard A. Brennan, Tyler A. Campbell
Effects Of Broadcasting Calls On Detection Probability In Occupancy Analyses Of Multiple Raptor Species, Jeremy A. Baumgardt, Michael L. Morrison, Leonard A. Brennan, Tyler A. Campbell
Western North American Naturalist
For population studies that rely on aural or visual observations of individuals, methods that induce a detectable response can greatly improve sample sizes and reduce costs. Numerous authors have reported improved detections using broadcast surveys in forested areas for various species of raptors; however, to our knowledge, none have attempted to quantify the effects of broadcast surveys on the detection probability (p) in the context of an occupancy study for multiple species. Our objective was to determine whether broadcasting conspecific and heterospecific calls (broadcast surveys) would increase p of raptor species compared to passive surveys. This comparison was …

Born Bad, Jaimee Pease
Children's Book and Media Review
Born Bad is a playful story surrounding the struggles of identity. Wolf is unhappy in who he is supposed to be and wanders around the animal kingdom, hopeless that he will ever be able to change. Along his journey, he meets many animals, each with their own shortcomings. Only when he observes the self-confidence and mutual support of his new friends does Wolf find the courage to embrace who he wants to be. C.K. Smouha’s simple phrases and diverse characters pair vividly with Stephen Smith’s bold illustrations to offer a humorous spin on clichéd idioms.

Children's Book and Media Review
The Wolf in Underpants chronicles the misfortune of a small woodland village blighted by a menacing wolf. But is the wolf really that bad? The village animals all seem to think so as they swap tales and cultivate a sole industry of protecting themselves from the aforementioned foe. But all that changes when they suddenly come face to face with the wily wolf himself! Fear changes to understanding as the wolf describes his seemingly threatening past behavior as merely symptoms of a chilly backside. Fortunately, a pair of cozy woolen underpants knitted by a kindly old lady recently remedied the …

Harriet Beecher Stowe: She's Not What You Think, Margaret (Maggie) E. Logan

They think about the books she has written and how she helped start the Civil War to free the slaves. Attached to Stowe’s name is the idea that she was someone who looked out for the rights and …

“As Far As It Is Translated Correctly”: Bible Translation And The Church, Daniel O. Mcclellan
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The publication of Thomas A. Wayment’s The New Testament: A Translation for Latter-day Saintsis a significant event that occasions not only a close examination of his work but also a discussion of how it fits into the complex relationship The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has long shared with Bible translation.1 If the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion, the King James Version of the Bible is certainly its linguistic cornerstone. The scripture and other revelations that flowed from the Prophet Joseph Smith and his successors in the early days of the Church were …
Peter As A Learner And Teacher, John Hilton Iii
Peter As A Learner And Teacher, John Hilton Iii
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Over a century ago, biblical scholar Phillip Shaff wrote, “Generally speaking, the character of Peter is described with essential harmony in all the Gospels. He appears as an admirable type of the Galilean: well-meaning, confiding, freedom-loving, and courageous, yet changeable, capricious, and eager for novelty.” Indeed, as Markus Bockmuehl points out, “Peter is, after Jesus, the most frequently mentioned individual both in the Gospels and in the New Testament as a whole.” Peter’s enthusiasm and forward nature can be seen throughout the four Gospels in the manner in which he speaks for the disciples and at times acts impetuously (for …
Hydrologic And Biologic Responses Of Anthropogenically Altered Lentic Springs To Restoration In The Great Basin, Leah Nicole Knighton
Hydrologic And Biologic Responses Of Anthropogenically Altered Lentic Springs To Restoration In The Great Basin, Leah Nicole Knighton
Theses and Dissertations
Water is a limited and highly valued resource in the semi-arid Great Basin. Surface water sources are often small and widely spaced apart, comprising only 1-3% of the surface area of the overall landscape. Despite their small size, these springs and surrounding wet meadows have a substantial effect on the surrounding environment. Springs provide drinking water, forage and cover for livestock and wildlife, habitat for diversity of plant species and a resource for human-related activities. In recent years, many of these springs have become dewatered due to diversions of groundwater for municipal water and agriculture, and climatic shifts in precipitation …
