Clinical reports of Calmare protocol efficacy suggest enhanced durability compared to TENS and the possibility changes in resting fMRI connectivity. The objective was to compare peripheral neuropathy pain relief and resting fMRI changes with Calmare and TENS treatments. Randomized double-blind trials performed in August 2015 and between August 2016 and November 2017, with 18 and 20 human peripheral neuropathy subjects, respectively. The initial trial examined effects of a single session while the latter trial examined the effects of a course of ten treatment sessions on consecutive weekdays. fMRI scans were examined for changes in blood flow correlations and connectivity. Subjective …

Hydroxychloroquine Prophylaxis For Covid-19, David D. Busath Oct 2020

Hydroxychloroquine Prophylaxis For Covid-19, David D. Busath

Faculty Publications

It is common in medicine that simple, inexpensive remedies are held hostage to medical prejudice, financial or political interest, and legal precedent. The purpose of this review is to take the point of view of the victims of COVID-19 and address whether scientific information, including randomized-control trials, can answer whether the hydroxychloroquine should be dispensed for those testing positive and their immediate recent contacts at the point of testing. Although the FDA in the United States is yet to be convinced, the demonstration of positive effects in clinical trials cannot be ignored and there is a large amount of information …

Toxoplasma Gondii Seropositivity And Serointensity And Cognitive Function In Adults, Bruce L. Brown, Shawn D. Gale, Lance D. Erickson, Evan L. Thacker, Elizabeth L. Mitchell, Dawson W. Hedges Oct 2020

Toxoplasma Gondii Seropositivity And Serointensity And Cognitive Function In Adults, Bruce L. Brown, Shawn D. Gale, Lance D. Erickson, Evan L. Thacker, Elizabeth L. Mitchell, Dawson W. Hedges

Faculty Publications

Infecting approximately one-third of the world’s human population, Toxoplasma gondii has been associated with cognitive function. Here, we sought to further characterize the association between Toxoplasma gondii and cognitive function in a community sample of adults aged approximately 40 to70 years. Using adjusted linear regression models, we found associations of Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity with worse reasoning (b = -.192, p < .05) and matrix pattern completion (b = -.681, p < .01), of higher anti-Toxoplasma gondii p22 antibody levels with worse reasoning (b = -.078, p < .01) and slower Trails (numeric) performance (b = 5.962, p < .05), of higher anti-Toxoplasma gondii sag1 levels with worse reasoning (b = -.081, p < .05) and worse matrix pattern completion (b = -.217, p < .05), and of higher mean of the anti-Toxoplasma gondii p22 and sag1 levels with worse reasoning (b = -.112, p < .05), slower Trails (numeric) performance (b = 9.195, p < .05), and worse matrix pattern completion (b = -.245, p < .05). Neither age nor educational attainment moderated associations between the measures of Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity or serointensity. Sex, however, moderated the association between the sag1 titer and digit-symbol substitution and the association between the mean of the p22 and sag1 levels and digit-symbol substitution, and income moderated the association between Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity and numeric memory and the association between the p22 level and symbol-digit substitution. Based on the available neuropsychological tasks in this study, Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity and serointensity were associated with some aspects of poorer executive function in adults.

Relationship-Enhancing Transcendent Religious Experiences Encourage Relational Meaning, Depth, Healing, And Action, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Alyssa Banford Witting, Ashley B. Lebaron, Kaity Peal Young, Joe M. Chelladurai Oct 2020

Relationship-Enhancing Transcendent Religious Experiences Encourage Relational Meaning, Depth, Healing, And Action, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Alyssa Banford Witting, Ashley B. Lebaron, Kaity Peal Young, Joe M. Chelladurai

Research on the relationship between religion, spirituality, and health suggests that religious involvement can help people deal with various kinds of adversity. Although there has been a great deal of work on the influence of religious involvement and religious and spiritual practices on physical, mental, and relational health, there exists a gap in the theoretical and empirical literature about the potential benefits of transcendent religious experiences on marriage and family relationships. We report some findings from a study of in-depth interviews with 198 religious American exemplar families from diverse religious, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds. The religious-ethnic make-up of the sample …

Microclimate And Summer Surface Activity In The American Pika (Ochotona Princeps), Lauren M. Benedict, Meghan Wiebe, Maxwell Plichta, Heather Batts, Jessica Johnson, Emily Monk, Chris Ray Oct 2020

Microclimate And Summer Surface Activity In The American Pika (Ochotona Princeps), Lauren M. Benedict, Meghan Wiebe, Maxwell Plichta, Heather Batts, Jessica Johnson, Emily Monk, Chris Ray

Western North American Naturalist

As regional climates continue to warm, climate-sensitive species might increasingly depend on microclimates to maintain normal activities. The American pika (Ochotona princeps) has been suggested as a sentinel of montane climate change, largely due to its sensitivity to warm temperatures and high exposure to changing climatic conditions. Pikas use talus to thermoregulate and have been shown to persist more often in talus slopes that create stable microclimates. However, many studies of pika behavior and persistence use metrics of climate measured above the talus surface, outside of the proposed microclimates that pikas can access. We paired fine-scale microclimate measurements …

Comparison Of Aging Structures And Life History Of A Historical Population Of Roundtail Chub (Cyprinidae) In The Yampa River, Colorado, Stephen T. Ross, Timothy C. Modde, Derek G. Ross, David Camak Oct 2020

Comparison Of Aging Structures And Life History Of A Historical Population Of Roundtail Chub (Cyprinidae) In The Yampa River, Colorado, Stephen T. Ross, Timothy C. Modde, Derek G. Ross, David Camak

Western North American Naturalist

The Gila robusta complex includes 3 large cyprinid species native to the Colorado River drainage. All 3 members of this complex, Humpback Chub G. cypha, Bonytail Chub G. elegans, and Roundtail Chub G. robusta, historically occurred in the Yampa River Canyon of Colorado and Utah. Both Humpback Chub and Bonytail Chub are federally listed as endangered, and the Roundtail Chub is now considered either imperiled or vulnerable to extinction by all state management agencies in the Colorado River basin. In late June or early July of 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002, we collected Roundtail Chub from the …

Outside Perspectives, Amber Taylor Oct 2020

Outside Perspectives, Amber Taylor

BYU Studies

I think most of us are familiar with a recent trend in storytelling to revisit and tell a traditional tale from the perspective of the antagonist. The live-action Disney movie Maleficent, for example, provides an empathetic backstory to the terrifyingly evil, but otherwise flat, character of Maleficent in the iconic animated version of Sleeping Beauty. The popular musical Wicked, by Stephen Schwartz, does the same with the character Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz. Even children’s books have gotten in on the postmodern storytelling action. In The True Story of …

Make Yourselves Gods: Mormons And The Unfinished Business Of American Secularism, Michael Hubbard Mackay Oct 2020

Make Yourselves Gods: Mormons And The Unfinished Business Of American Secularism, Michael Hubbard Mackay

BYU Studies

Borrowing its title from Joseph Smith’s far-reaching Nauvoo theology, Make Yourselves Gods is somehow even more provocative than its title. The average Latter-day Saint reader will chafe under its vocabulary, struggle through its detailed contributions to the study of secularism, and be at odds with its use of queer critique. Furthermore, to the average reader’s disdain, this book will be chewed and discussed for a generation to come. It is not likely to be forgotten.

Remote Cameras Versus Visual And Auditory Methods For Surveying The Colorado Chipmunk (Neotamias Quadrivittatus), Ian E. Perkins-Taylor, Jennifer K. Frey Sep 2020

Remote Cameras Versus Visual And Auditory Methods For Surveying The Colorado Chipmunk (Neotamias Quadrivittatus), Ian E. Perkins-Taylor, Jennifer K. Frey

Western North American Naturalist

Noninvasive survey methods may be necessary when studying rare species or when site conditions are likely to result in unintended mortalities during conventional live trapping. Traditional noninvasive methods based on visual and auditory observations, such as stationary point and roaming, time-constrained area surveys, may be prone to error. Remote cameras are primarily used with large mammals but have increasingly been applied to small mammals. We compared survey methods for a rare subspecies of the Colorado chipmunk (Neotamias quadrivittatus oscuraensis) occurring in a remote mountain range in New Mexico using stationary point surveys; roaming, time-constrained area surveys; and remote-camera …

Archival materials can often be found in cultural heritage organizations that do not have trained special collections catalogers on staff. In this workshop, participants will learn how to catalog manuscripts, photographs, and audiovisual materials so they can be discovered in online catalogs and databases. Both item and collection-level cataloging will be discussed and participants will learn when and how to apply metadata standards like RDA and DACS. Time for hands-on practice will be included.

Contingent Diachronicity And Biodiversity: Lessons From An Agent-Based Model Simulating The Impact Of Biodiversity Offsetting Policy In A Complex, Socio-Ecological System, Matthew Hare Sep 2020

Contingent Diachronicity And Biodiversity: Lessons From An Agent-Based Model Simulating The Impact Of Biodiversity Offsetting Policy In A Complex, Socio-Ecological System, Matthew Hare

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

BioOffset-Emergent is a spatially-explicit, agent-based model of a multi-trophic, socio-ecological system. It investigates the potential impacts of different biodiversity offsetting policy options on net biodiversity. Biodiversity offsetting is being promoted internationally as a means of facilitating socio-economically beneficial infrastructure development whilst avoiding losses to net biodiversity. Where biodiversity would be unavoidably lost as a result of infrastructure development, similar habitat in another offset location is created to restore the lost biodiversity or improve upon it. BioOffset-Emergent models the components, on a 2D raster grid, of a complex socio-ecological system in which a multi-tropic woodland ecosystem - featuring trees, the bugs …

Landscape-Scale Interactions Between Pastures, Crops, Trees And Cattle In Savanna Grassland Systems, Carsten Marohn Sep 2020

Landscape-Scale Interactions Between Pastures, Crops, Trees And Cattle In Savanna Grassland Systems, Carsten Marohn

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Conversion of rangelands into cropland has been promoted for agricultural intensification of up to 400 million ha land in the Guinea Savannah. Realistic assessment of potential environmental and socio-economic side-effects is difficult as large areas, changing climate, soil, hydrological, plant, animal and human aspects need to be considered. The predominant cattle grazing systems on pasture under Acacias are complex including herd mobility in the landscape. Interactions between soils, plants and animals include plant reactions to grazing (resprouting, resource allocation), effects of pasture quality on animal nutrition and subsequently of manure quality on soil fertility. Herders design management strategies to cope …

An Innovative Integrated Modelling Tool To Assess And Design Territorial Crop-Livestock Systems, Rui Catarino Sep 2020

An Innovative Integrated Modelling Tool To Assess And Design Territorial Crop-Livestock Systems, Rui Catarino

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Fostering local exchanges between specialized arable and livestock farms can simultaneously help to develop crop diversification and re-localization of livestock feed production, two major sustainability challenges of industrial agriculture. However, the aggregated benefits and drawbacks of developing a “Territorial Crop-Livestock System” (TCLS) based on exchanges is yet to be stablished. A major lock-in is the lack of decision support systems to analyse the underpinning dynamics and associated uncertainties of necessary socio-technical changes and to design necessary organizational aspects within and among farms. This paper presents an innovative high-resolution multi-agent and dynamic spatial modelling framework of agricultural landscape, MAELIA, developed to …

A Synopsis And Extension Of Thayne And Gantt's Who Is Truth? Reframing Our Questions For A Richer Faith, Lane Fischer Sep 2020

A Synopsis And Extension Of Thayne And Gantt's Who Is Truth? Reframing Our Questions For A Richer Faith, Lane Fischer

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Thayne and Gantt’s recent book, Who is Truth?: Reframing Our Questions for a Richer Faith, presents an ancient but revolutionary conception of truth. They compare the ancient Greek conception of Idea-truth with the ancient Hebrew conception of Person-truth. They explore the implications of Person-truth for our faith. They use Person-truth to reframe questions. This article presents a synopsis of the book and extends its implications around the issue of suffering and psychotherapy.

Semantic-Driven Unsupervised Image-To-Image Translation For Distinct Image Domains, Wesley Ackerman Sep 2020

Semantic-Driven Unsupervised Image-To-Image Translation For Distinct Image Domains, Wesley Ackerman

Theses and Dissertations

We expand the scope of image-to-image translation to include more distinct image domains, where the image sets have analogous structures, but may not share object types between them. Semantic-Driven Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation for Distinct Image Domains (SUNIT) is built to more successfully translate images in this setting, where content from one domain is not found in the other. Our method trains an image translation model by learning encodings for semantic segmentations of images. These segmentations are translated between image domains to learn meaningful mappings between the structures in the two domains. The translated segmentations are then used as the basis …

Ansible: Select-To-Edit For Physical Widgets, Benjamin M. Crowder Sep 2020

Ansible: Select-To-Edit For Physical Widgets, Benjamin M. Crowder

Theses and Dissertations

Ansible brings select-to-edit functionality to physical widgets. When programming sets of physical widgets, it can be bothersome for a programmer to remember the name of the software object that corresponds to a specific widget. Click-to-edit functionality in GUI programming provides a physical action--moving the mouse to a widget and clicking a button on the mouse--to select a virtual widget. In a similar vein, when programming physical widgets, it is natural to point at a widget and think, "I want to program that one." Ansible allows physical user interface programmers to "click" on a physical widget by making a physical action: …

J. C. Sharman. Empires Of The Weak: The Real Story Of European Expansion And The Creation Of The New World Order, Niv Horesh Sep 2020

J. C. Sharman. Empires Of The Weak: The Real Story Of European Expansion And The Creation Of The New World Order, Niv Horesh

Comparative Civilizations Review

Warfare had undergone many revolutionary changes over the centuries. Hittite chariots, for example, are said to have spread east and south bolstering aristocracies at the dawn of urbanization some three thousand years ago. Then, the quality of swords and armouries infinitely improved, as the infantry steadily took centre stage, and the Iron Age swept across Eurasia and, later on, Africa. The Chinese invented the crossbow as early as the 7th Century BCE, and Hannibal surprised the Romans with elephants few centuries later.

The Psychology Department, Brandeis University In The 1960s: A Comment On Feigenbaum’S Memoir, David Lester

Comparative Civilizations Review

Kenneth Feigenbaum has written a colorful account of his time as a faculty member of the Department of Psychology at Brandeis University from 1962-1965 and his interactions with Abraham Maslow (Comparative Civilizations Review: No. 82. 63-73, 2020). This view, from the perspective of the graduate students, supplements Feigenbaum’s account.

“For The General Good Of Mankind”: Why Joseph Smith’S Presidential Campaign Matters, Derek R. Sainsbury Sep 2020

“For The General Good Of Mankind”: Why Joseph Smith’S Presidential Campaign Matters, Derek R. Sainsbury

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Joseph Smith’s 1844 campaign for president of the United States is much more than a curious footnote in Latter-day Saint history. Recent scholarship, including Storming the Nation, confirms that the campaign aligned with the Restoration’s goals to gather Israel, establish Zion, and protect the rights of all humanity. By examining the reasons, means, and outcomes of Joseph’s campaign, we can highlight truths of the Restoration that are central to our students’ covenant responsibility to gather Israel and prepare the world for the Second Coming.

Was The Earth Formed From The Debris Of Other Planets, Trent Stephens Sep 2020

Was The Earth Formed From The Debris Of Other Planets, Trent Stephens

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

In the past, some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have believed that the earth was made from pieces of other worlds and that the fossil record can be dismissed because those fossils came from worlds that were broken up and reworked into our earth. I understand that sometimes this concept has been taught even in seminary, institute, and Sunday School classrooms. Because I have heard these ideas espoused, even recently, and because I have spent much of my career studying and teaching biology and the fossil record, I decided to initiate a search to discover …
