Mouse proclaims to all that he is the mighty tiger. All the other animals try and name the characteristics of a tiger and how a little mouse might not fit them—but mouse has an explanation for each of them. When a real tiger shows up Mouse still plays the game, and by looking at certain characteristics convinces this tiger he is really something less scary. This extends to all the animals. The birds are simply lollipops and that yellow snake a banana. Mouse is never satisfied though, finally convincing himself he is much mightier than even the greatest beast around.

Grumpy Duck, Ellen Mccarty
Grumpy Duck, Ellen Mccarty
Children's Book and Media Review
Duck was in a grumpy mood. Nothing was good enough. The pond was dry, she had no one to play with, and a small gray cloud hovered over her head. She approached each of her friends in turn - dog, pig, rooster, rabbit, tortoise, and goat. Each invited her to join them, but she was too grumpy. Her gray cloud grew and her grumpiness spread. At last, the cloud was ginormous and black, covering all the animals. It burst in a huge downpour of raindrops. The animals started splashing and singing, their gloom washing away with the rain.
Even More Lesser Spotted Animals, Amanda Morgan
Even More Lesser Spotted Animals, Amanda Morgan
Children's Book and Media Review
Meet the underdogs of the animal kingdom. they're not as praised as lions, tigers and other big shot mammals, but this book is here to show you why they should be. The dingiso basically looks like a living breathing teddy bear and can jump to the ground from a 60 foot tree without receiving injury. The forest musk deer, unlike real deer, hangs out in trees. The little yellow-throated marten which, as the name suggests, has bright yellow fur, can take down an entire deer. The gerenuk and the dibatags are antelope with necks like giraffes. In learning about all …

Dusk is a busy time; a time for hunting. The dingo mother runs softly through the forest, sniffing the air for prey. She passes other animals of the bush: possum, wombat, lizard, and kangaroo in her hunt. She moves softly, but swift and sure, so that she is able to bring home food to feed her young family.

Tidal Translations: Thinking-With Untranslatability In Craig Santos Perez's From Unincorporated Territory, Maryn Gardner
Tidal Translations: Thinking-With Untranslatability In Craig Santos Perez's From Unincorporated Territory, Maryn Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Craig Santos Perez's poetic series from Unincorporated Territory describes and decries the U.S. militarization, colonization, and environmental degradation of Guam in the Western Pacific through multilingual, excerpted, and series-long poems. Perez's writing style requires slow, careful reading with translations sometimes appearing on the same page, various pages later, or not at all. I describe this kind of elongated translation as slow translation, recalling translation theorist Michael Cronin's "Slow Language" movement. This thesis invites readers, especially multispecies ethnographers, to slow down the translation of nonhuman species and their stories by paying attention to moments of untranslatability in multispecies literature and interactions. …

These classes are geared towards K-12 education majors and are taught to a broader group of preservice teachers. ECE majors have a very defined set of grades and ages that they can teach, all of which have unique and …
Communities Of Water: An Examination Of Cooperation And Conflict In Water Management Practices In The Central Peruvian Andes, Sylvie D. Littledale
Communities Of Water: An Examination Of Cooperation And Conflict In Water Management Practices In The Central Peruvian Andes, Sylvie D. Littledale
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores two examples of water management in the highland Peruvian villages, San Pedro de Llancha and San Antonio de Chinchina. One example is of cooperation and union between the two communities. The other is of conflict between the same two villages just 40 years prior. I examine ethnographic and ethnohistorical data from both the collaborative period and the conflictive period of these two communities’ relations over water. The data suggest that, while the outcomes of these two periods were drastically different, the processes through which these communities came into relation with one another were quite similar. Their communal …
Assessing Augmented Reality Instruction In Manufacturing Engineering Education, Janine Draper Price
Assessing Augmented Reality Instruction In Manufacturing Engineering Education, Janine Draper Price
Theses and Dissertations
Augmented Reality (AR) is fast-growing technology that has proved itself in many applications, including manufacturing environments. Manufacturing engineers benefit in an industrial environment by harnessing this technology in the workplace to guide workers through a variety of tasks. It is no longer a question on whether it is useful, but what are the best ways of applying the technology. Currently there are no published studies on ways to use augmented reality in a Manufacturing Engineering Educational Environment (MEEE). This study examines various ways that AR can be used in an MEEE setting and assesses the value of such applications. This …
Mindfulness And Observational Drawing, Corinne Christopherson Sonderegger
Mindfulness And Observational Drawing, Corinne Christopherson Sonderegger
Theses and Dissertations
Observational drawing has many benefits, yet it can be a difficult and frustrating curriculum for students and teachers alike. As I was teaching elementary and college art classes simultaneously, I noticed a significant discrepancy between my younger and older students. Students in my elementary art classes loved to draw and often expressed how excited they were to make art. However, students in my college art classes were more hesitant and self-conscious about drawing and did not believe they could progress artistically. Many of these students had abandoned drawing in elementary or middle school. This pattern evokes the U curve of …

Heather Montgomery, a writer and biologist from Alabama, answers every question you never knew you had about roadkill. Did you know that Tasmanian Devils are endangered, in part because of a contagious cancer? Scientists learned that from roadkill. Did you know that an invasive species of python has brought parasites to the native snakes of Florida? Scientists learned that from roadkill, too. This book explains how flattened animals are used for all sorts of bizarre purposes. Scientists study roadkill to learn more about …

I Want My Hat Back, Victoria Savage
I Want My Hat Back, Victoria Savage
Children's Book and Media Review
The bear is missing his hat. He goes from animal to animal and very politely and patiently asks them if they have seen his hat. The rabbit is adamant that he knows nothing about any hat and angrily decries the accusation of having stolen it. The bear continues asking, running into an armadillo that doesn't even know what a hat is, and a snake who has seen a blue, round hat—but no, the bear’s hat does not look like that. The bear finally lies down and decides that his hat must be gone forever. This is a very melancholy thought. …
Fire And Furry: Pets Get Political, Amanda Morgan
Fire And Furry: Pets Get Political, Amanda Morgan
Children's Book and Media Review
Politics have gone crazy in the past few years, and these animals are here to tell and show you all about it. Cat-ivists hold signs. A hedgehog laments his small hands. A chihuahua with a doughnut pleads for “Equal bites for all.” After pages of paw-litical puns and adorable animal pictures, a wise owl finishes the book off by telling the reader to “stay woke” in civic and political engagement.
Duck!, Krista Alletto
Duck!, Krista Alletto
Children's Book and Media Review
The farm is quiet and peaceful. The horse, cow, pig and sheep are all enjoying the afternoon until Duck waddles in and starts yelling “DUCK!” All the animals, believing that Duck is mistaken and confused, become frustrated and try to explain that not all animals are ducks. Amidst the chaos, it becomes clear just what Duck was meaning with his emphatic word. It wasn’t to label the animals as Ducks, but to warn the others of approaching danger. Maybe Duck should have been yelling “RUN!”

Parental Incarceration As A Predictor Of Legal Cynicism, Mackenzie Joy Heim
Parental Incarceration As A Predictor Of Legal Cynicism, Mackenzie Joy Heim
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have established that legal cynicism is linked to violence, deviant behavior, and crime. In response to the potentially dangerous implications of a legally cynical society, research in recent years has attempted to identify experiences and conditions that play a role in the development of legal attitudes. Given that youths' familial and social conditions appear to be influential predictors, this study tests the relationship between parental incarceration and legal cynicism. Data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study were used for this analysis. Results from three OLS regression models indicate that parental incarceration is not a significant predictor of …
The Role Of Bacterial Genotype In The Persistence Of The Microbiota Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Sarah J. Gottfredson
The Role Of Bacterial Genotype In The Persistence Of The Microbiota Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Sarah J. Gottfredson
Theses and Dissertations
In this work we use the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model to identify bacterial genes that help bacteria to persist in their animal hosts. Early work on this model system established that dietary replenishment drives the composition of the D. melanogaster gut microbiota, and subsequent research has shown that some bacterial strains can colonize the fly for much longer than the flow of bulk diet through the gut. In this work we reveal that bacterial genes influence bacterial persistence by studying the correlation between bacterial genotype and persistence in the D. melanogaster gut microbiota. We performed an initial …

Blood, Tears, And Wounded Eyes: Holy Effluvia And The Compassion Of The Virgin In Early Modern Flemish Visual And Devotional Culture, Katharine Grace Davidson Bekker
Theses and Dissertations
Images of the Mater dolorosa, the weeping Mother of God mourning over her dead son, are plentiful art of Northern Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and often foreground the shedding of effluvia—blood, sweat, and tears—in their depictions of the holy pair. This paper explores the visual themes of tears, blood, eyes, and wounds as vital actors in images that require close, meditative, and affective looking and engagement. Such image formats include small-scale pairings of the Man of Sorrows and Mater dolorosa as well as books of hours. In these contexts, the holy fluids and their bodily sources expand …
