A Historical Analysis Of Territorial Government In Utah Under Alfred Cumming, 1857-1861, Charles S. Peterson
A Historical Analysis Of Territorial Government In Utah Under Alfred Cumming, 1857-1861, Charles S. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
From earliest days, Utah Territory was the scene of violent disagreement between federal officers and Mormon citizens. By 1857 returning officers reported that a rebellion existed in Utah. On the strength of these reports, President Buchanan appointed Alfred Cumming as Governor and dispatched Albert S. Johnston's army to install the new executive. Johnston's army started late and had not arrived in Salt Lake City by autumn. The Mormons further delayed the expedition until winter snows forced Johnston to encamp at Fort Bridger.
During the summer, Buchanan also appointed Secretary of State John Hartnett, Chief Justice Delano R. Eckles, Associate Justices …

Studies On The Periodicity Of Certain Plankton Species Of Salem Lake, Gene A. Pratt
Studies On The Periodicity Of Certain Plankton Species Of Salem Lake, Gene A. Pratt
Theses and Dissertations
Plankton samples were taken periodically from one station in Salem Lake from the fall of 1955 through the winter of 1957. Other data including the pH, dissolved oxygen content, turbidity, brightness of day, temperature, and time of day were recorded at the time of each collection. The plankton samples were centrifuged and preserved in a 4% formalin solution. They were later examined microscopically, and density, percent density, and percent frequency calculations were made from them for ten selected species and for the five phyla which they represent.
Chemosynthetic Microorganisms In Leaching Sulfide Minerals, A. Keith Jameson
Chemosynthetic Microorganisms In Leaching Sulfide Minerals, A. Keith Jameson
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation showed that a single bacterium was capable of sulfide oxidation in exposed ore bodies. This single bacterium was isolated and characterized. It exhibited different characteristics than any previously known organism. It was found to be a chemosynthetic autotroph. An optimum nutrient concentration was determined for pyrite oxidation. The nutrient concentration was determined for pyrite oxidation. The nutrient contains only a source of phosphate and nitrogen. Urea was found to be a better source of nitrogen than ammonium sulfate which had previously been used. The effect of various organic compounds on the oxidation of pyrite was observed. Glucose and …

The Incidence Of Nasal Mites In Over-Wintering Red-Wing Blackbirds In The Vicinity Of Utah Lake, Utah, George M. Talley
Theses and Dissertations
This paper reports the incidence and associations of four species of mites, Paraneonyssus icteridius, Ptilonyssus n. sp. "A", Sternostoma n. sp. "A" , and Speleognathus sp., found in the nasal cavities of the common red-wing blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus ssp.) and Brewer's blackbird (Euphagus cyanocephalus cyanocephalus Wagler) over-wintering in the vicinity of Provo, Utah County, Utah. Three species of mites are reported for the first time from these birds, and two of these three are undescribed species.
The Embryology Of The Paradise Fish, Macropodus Opercularis Linnaeus, Lewis M. Mulkay
The Embryology Of The Paradise Fish, Macropodus Opercularis Linnaeus, Lewis M. Mulkay
Theses and Dissertations
The development of Sacropodus opercularis Linnaeus, (Perciformes: Anabantidae), is described from cleavage to five days post hatching. For the most part M. opercularis follows the pattern of typical teleostean development except as noted below: 1. The heart develops under the left eye along the anterior margin of the yolk sac. This is similar to that reported by Ingesoll (1951) for the Blue Gourami, Trichogaster trichopterus. 2. The ear develps from the head mesenchyme alongside the brain rather than from a placode. 3. The gut develops first in the posterior region then differentiates cephalad. It was also learned that: 1. No …

Theses and Dissertations
The present work is a general survey of the vegetation of the Utah portion of the Dinosaur National Monument with special emphasis on some of the ecological aspects of the area. The vegetation ranges from xerophytic plant communities of the lower elevations to mesophytic communities of the higher elevations. Hydrophytic plant communities are also present to a limited extent along the Green River and where seeps or springs arise. Soils vary from fine clay to coarse gravel. The dividing lines between formations is often marked by extreme differences in soil type. During the author's first collecting trip into the Monument …
Utah Mail Service Before The Coming Of The Railroad, 1869, Ralph L. Mcbride
Utah Mail Service Before The Coming Of The Railroad, 1869, Ralph L. Mcbride
Theses and Dissertations
After making a study of the pre-railroad Utah mail service, I have found it appropriate to categorize certain broad elements. This thesis is divided into eight parts, each part following in chronological order except for the one dealing with the Pony Express and the telegraph. Which covers approximately the same period of time as the chapter entitled "Resumption of the Mail." Though there was a most definite overlapping of time for these two historical phases, it would seem that there was adequate justification for making two chapters.
The initial chapter in this thesis pertains to the unofficial mail, beginning in …

The Life And Missionary Labors Of George Washington Hill, Ralph O. Brown
The Life And Missionary Labors Of George Washington Hill, Ralph O. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The epic story of the Mormon pioneers is the story of a valiant, though persecuted group of people. Having been driven from their homes in the dead of winter, they fled to the Rocky Mountains and settled in the Great Salt Lake Valley. Here they became noted for their achievements in pioneering, homemaking, and colonizing great portions of this western country
Prominent in these activities of homemaking and colonizing, was George Washington Hill. Nature had endowed him handsomely. He was large and powerful of stature and he had a dignity and magnetism which drew men to him. In addition, he …
An Investigation Of The Contribution Of Latter-Day Revelation To An Understanding Of The Atonement Of Christ, Eldon R. Taylor
An Investigation Of The Contribution Of Latter-Day Revelation To An Understanding Of The Atonement Of Christ, Eldon R. Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the contributions of latter-day revelation to an understanding of the atonement of Christ in addition to that which is taught in the Bible.
It is generally acknowledged among Christians that the primary purpose of Christ's mission was to redeem mankind. The doctrine of the atonement contains the foundation principles of Chirstian faith and, yet the creeds of the several churches are in serious disagreement on many vital principles involved.
If the widely differing views are due to insufficient information in the bible, the question naturally follows - how does modern revelation clarify …

The most numerous animal in all plots …
The Effect Of Ferrous And Ferric Ions On The Conversion Of Malate To Pyruvate By A Cell Free Extract Of Pigeon Liver, Keith Erwin Richardson
The Effect Of Ferrous And Ferric Ions On The Conversion Of Malate To Pyruvate By A Cell Free Extract Of Pigeon Liver, Keith Erwin Richardson
Theses and Dissertations
Recent investigations on the crude pigeon liver extracts have shown the presence of an enzyme which catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malate to pyruvate and carbon dioxide. The name malic enzyme has been given to this enzyme to distinguish it from malic dehydrogenase. Under aerobic conditions the addition of ferrous sulfate resulted in inhibition of the action of malic enzyme. Subsequent investigation showed that the inhibition obaerved was not due to ferrous ions, but due to ferric ions which were contaminating the ferrous sulfate. It was also shown that under aerobic conditions ferrous ions were rapidly oxidized to ferric ions. …

A Study Of The Problem Of A Personal Devil And Its Relationship To Latter-Day Saint Beliefs, Lamar E. Garrard
A Study Of The Problem Of A Personal Devil And Its Relationship To Latter-Day Saint Beliefs, Lamar E. Garrard
Theses and Dissertations
The problem of the existence of a devil is important, since it relates to other beliefs which a person or his religion may uphold. The orthodox Christian concepts of the divinity of Christ, the Fall of man, the Atonement, and the inspiration of the Bible are altered when a belief in Satan is discarded.
The prophets of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) take a very definite stand concerning the existence of Satan. They declare that the devil and his angels exist and that they tempt and try to deceive men. L.D.S. scriptures, given through modern revelation, …
