Broadway Cares: Continuing To Raise Awareness, Cassandra Utt
Honors Projects
With over 300 student organizations on campus at Bowling Green State University, one would think that nearly everything has been covered. Last year, however, I was handed a project that had only been done sporadically in previous years on campus and in the community and could use some additional attention. The project was to hold a benefit performance to raise money in the support of the fight against HIV/AIDS. The initial plan was to just carry out the project as had previously been done, simply scheduling a benefit performance with a few friends. However, after thinking through the project and …
Breaking The Rules With A Smile: Four Women In Theater In The 1920s, Brigid Randolph
Breaking The Rules With A Smile: Four Women In Theater In The 1920s, Brigid Randolph
Honors Projects
This project is comprised of the script for a one-woman show dealing with the lives and careers of Beatrice Lillie, Dorothy Parker, Kay Swift, and Josephine Baker in the decade between 1920 and 1930. It is meant to explore the ways in which all four women crossed boundaries set on them by their gender and their professions, and both how they were defined and how they refused to be defined by societal expectations.
A Focus Group Study Of The Academic Success And Satisfaction Among Undergraduates With Undecided Majors, Tiffany Alexander
A Focus Group Study Of The Academic Success And Satisfaction Among Undergraduates With Undecided Majors, Tiffany Alexander
Honors Projects
This project interviewed 4 initially undecided major students who now have declared majors in a focus group setting to determine their feelings of satisfaction and success. The study has three major findings. First, students felt their initial undecided status allowed more flexible course selection and resulted in a more well-rounded education. Second, while students liked this greater flexibility, students felt after declaring a major, they constantly played “catch up†to graduate on time and to receive career internships. Lastly, students liked their pre-major advisors, but wanted advisors to give them more time, career direction and advice, and to have a …
Fairmount, Indiana: Hometown Of James Dean, Elizabeth Truman
Fairmount, Indiana: Hometown Of James Dean, Elizabeth Truman
Honors Projects
More than 57 years after James Dean’s death, thousands of fans flock to his hometown each year. Armed with my love for the icon, and a curiosity as to why people repeatedly visit the small town I hold so dear to my own heart, I began researching the town and interviewing fans and Fairmount locals. After four trips to Fairmount conducting interviews and interacting with fans, I was able to gather all the footage I needed for my documentary. I used a Canon60D camera to shoot my interviews, and the footage was edited using Final Cut Pro. The information I …

Poverty And The Emergent Culture Of Violence In Northern Nigeria: The Imperative Of Theatre For Development (Tfd) Intervention Strategy, Rasheedah Liman
Poverty And The Emergent Culture Of Violence In Northern Nigeria: The Imperative Of Theatre For Development (Tfd) Intervention Strategy, Rasheedah Liman
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
Recently, northern Nigeria is attracting global media attention, albeit negatively, on issues which border on leadership failure, ethno-religious conflicts, youth unemployment and official corruption. The attendant poverty in the region has created a climate of frustration and disillusionment on the part of the citizens, which, together with similar problems in other parts of Nigeria, are transmuting into threats to corporate existence. The hydra-headed phenomenon of Boko Haram, for instance, is for all intents and purposes a product of multifaceted social problems. To worsen the case, there appears to be complete failure of imagination going by the way in which both …

The Necessity For The Reconfiguration Of Shakespeare Education In Secondary Schools, Kristen Buder
The Necessity For The Reconfiguration Of Shakespeare Education In Secondary Schools, Kristen Buder
Honors Projects
Current resources, such as "No Fear Shakespeare," translate Shakespeare's works in to modern English. These resources have become a reference for students. Although these resources are common, they do not offer the educational value that complex literary works should. In order to address the common misuse of these resources, the following study examines the history of the study of Shakespeare, as well as the educational value of the use of Shakespeare adaptations in secondary classrooms. Through studying the Ohio State Grade Level Standards and the Common Core learning anchors, this argument for the inclusion of adaptation seems well supported. Not …

Fish Tank: Studying The Conveyance Of Theme Through Film, Ethan Michael Roberts
Fish Tank: Studying The Conveyance Of Theme Through Film, Ethan Michael Roberts
Honors Projects
In this Honors Project the author's objective was to successfully helm a short film that effectively and fluidly conveyed a ciomplex thematic idea. Taking into account the research the author conducted on theories of film criticism as well as close viewings of thematically rich films. The author produced, directed, and edited a short film that expressed an intricate thematic idea. The author then tested the effectiveness of the film's thematic communication by screening a polished cut for a closed audience and subsequently engaging the audience about their interpretations of the film's theme via questionnaire. This report will outline the process …
