Where Does The Music Come From? Musical Meaning And Musical Discourse In Ingmar Bergman's Films, Per F. Broman Jan 2021

Where Does The Music Come From? Musical Meaning And Musical Discourse In Ingmar Bergman's Films, Per F. Broman

College of Musical Arts Faculty Publications

In his last major radio appearance, in 2004 on the Swedish talk show Sommar, Ingmar Bergman devoted most of the time to his musical interests, highlighting his belief that music transcends language and manifests a deeply philosophical vision of life and beyond: music is a gift—a divine one, although Bergman did not mention God—given to provide hints of realities beyond our perception. Through analyses of the films and manuscript materials in the Ingmar Bergman Archives, this chapter focuses on four instances of interaction between music and dialogue in Bergman’s films that resonate with his comments in the show: music is …

Attributes That Influence Mall Development And Operations, Bob Lee, David L. Groves Apr 2020

Attributes That Influence Mall Development And Operations, Bob Lee, David L. Groves

Visions in Leisure and Business

Malls and shopping spaces are at a crossroads in their societal positions. The change in these retail spaces is in a state of flux. Some have gone out of business, others in the state of decline, and while others are prospering. The primary question is: what are the differences among these operations? This is a difficult question to answer and there are many perspectives. A way of trying to understand the audiences and how the shopping spaces can develop knowledge of customers’ desire is through attributes. These attributes must be understood in terms of strengths and weaknesses. A SWOT analysis …

Historically, swimming pools have been a source of inequity when it comes to the distribution of recreation services in the United States. Many of the problems that correlate with the inequitable allocation of recreation resources including public swimming pools began with ideas about race, geography, poor planning practices and faulty policymaking (Rothstein, 2017). Moreover, one of the primary outcomes of engaged, inclusive planning is equity in the provision of recreation programs and facilities. In this essay, we offer a summary of key legal cases that help address questions related resource allocation related to public swimming pools. Finally, we present a …

Exploring How Media Portrayals Of Mental Health Affect Public Perceptions Through Devised Theatre, Lauren Lash

Honors Projects

A performance piece and this corresponding paper serve as my honors project, which has two main foci: devised theatre and how the media affects perceptions of mental health. This packet is a documentation of the rehearsal process and sources that influenced the piece and a link to the piece itself. Documenting the rehearsal process included a list of songs, rehearsal plans, rehearsal schedules, and my reflections on the process. Helpful sources included a photo release form, which allowed me to include a recording in this packet, and my annotated bibliography included sources about devising, portraying mental health in theatre, and …

Video Marketing Strategies For Generation Z, Tay R. Sauer, Carol S. Hall

Honors Projects

If Generation Z is the first generation of digital natives, what is the best strategy for marketing college recruitment to them? Video marketing has been proven to be the most profitable form of marketing, especially short videos that can easily be spread on social media. Generation Z connects with a university most when they are able to see themselves reflected back in a diverse student body. Generation Z doesn't like "fluff" in their university recruitment marketing; this money-minded generation wants to see that they will quickly be able to get a job, internship, or campus opportunities to advance their career. …

The Unwavering Movement: Integrating Reason Into British Penal Code 1730-1823, Rebecca M. Good

International ResearchScape Journal

Between the early 16th and 18th centuries, English attitude towards crime and correction were based on the strong held belief that faith and religion were the only cure to immorality. Lawmakers began to threaten citizens with capital punishment for menial crimes such as petty theft and begging. Resulting of a moral panic, lawmakers turned to the deterrence to dissuade citizens from partaking in criminal activity. The list of crimes punishable by death in England rose from 50 offenses in 1688 to over 220 in 1815. This article explains the origins of the Bloody Code and how Enlightenment-Era thought …

Vocal Hygiene For Musical Theatre Performers, Anne M. Koziara, Dr. Ron Scherer Oct 2019

Vocal Hygiene For Musical Theatre Performers, Anne M. Koziara, Dr. Ron Scherer

Honors Projects

There have been numerous “do’s - and - don’t’s” vocal hygiene pamphlets made for voice users, however, a guide for vocal hygiene for musical theatre performers is not typically included in these pamphlets. Musical theatre performers differ from other professional voice users, because in addition to singing, they also have the taxing responsibilities of acting and dancing. As a result, many musical theatre performers have questions and often seem confused about what proper vocal hygiene should be for them. The goal of this honors project was to create an advisory brochure on vocal hygiene specifically for musical theatre performers. This …

Hamlet: The Grim Reaper, J. L. Williams Aug 2019

Hamlet: The Grim Reaper, J. L. Williams

WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing

Right versus wrong when battling grief under God can evoke in one a very strong argument, the pain at times can be too much to bear but we must go on. The soliloquy “To Be or Not to Be” is arguably the most famous from Shakespeare’s prominent play Hamlet; the piece displaying themes of logos and pathos throughout. The young prince’s speech reflects upon the tragedy of his father’s passing and logically debates the value of his own existence in comparison; accompanied by the presence of his true love Ophelia, and unknowingly to the eavesdropping ears of the new king …

Writing A Speculative Fiction Novel, Ashlyn Victoria May 2019

Writing A Speculative Fiction Novel, Ashlyn Victoria

Honors Projects

This Honors Project is a speculative fiction novel, and its setting includes topics like artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and sustainability. Though it's not yet complete (which was expected), I was able to write forty-four pages (the equivalent of more than one-hundred pages using the standard 12-pt, double-spaced Times New Roman font) over the duration of the project. A synopsis is attached, but the manuscript remains unpublished; revealing it could reduce the novel's chances of publication in the future.

Freemasons: Patrons Of The Enlightenment Arts, Jacob Money

Honors Projects

The Enlightenment is known as a time of great advances in science, political theory and individual rights. What is often not given proper consideration are the advances made in the fine arts. Out of this time period came the Hudson River Valley School of painting, a return to Greco-Roman architecture, and the explosion in popularity of the performing arts. In each of these cases, the historically secretive organization known as the Freemasons had a role in the patronage of these artists, architects and composers. Most people are aware of the Masons through popular media and although countless conspiracy theories surround …

Shakespeare And Shamanism, Grace Friend May 2019

Shakespeare And Shamanism, Grace Friend

Honors Projects

Shakespeare is a hallmark of English literature and the focus for many adaptations. From children’s books to teenage romantic comedies, Western culture is filled with proliferating versions of his plays. Shakespeare adaption is not limited to the west though as other cultures have also taken up his works. South Korea is one such place and gaining attention too through director Yang Jung-Ung. Yang is notable for including shamanistic images in his plays, but why reference the oldest spiritual practice of Korea in a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s plays? Examining Yang Jung-Ung’s Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the role …

An Examination Of Sound Resource Libraries And Their Applications At Bowling Green State University, Madeleine Grimm

Honors Projects

In this applied research project, I have explored the uses and limitations of sound resources at Bowling Green State University for student projects. My goal has been to create a stock music library for students on campus to have easy access to for class projects and portfolio work. What sound resources currently exist for student use in general and at BGSU? How are these sound resources currently managed at BGSU? What are the …
