Implementing The Perkins V Career And Technical Education Act For The Advancement Of Stem Careers Among Tribal Communities, Maximilian Bonnici, Bryan Dewsbury

Career and technical education courses, funded by a 2018 re-authorization known as the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, provide an ideal opportunity for the advancement of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers in the United States. The article takes a close look at the conditions and implications of the re-authorized "Perkins V" for the advancement and promotion of career and technical education courses among tribal communities.

Given the growing trend toward using technology to assess student learning, this investigation examined test mode comparability of student achievement scores obtained from paper-pencil and computerized assessments of statewide End-of-Course and End- of-Grade examinations in the subject areas of high school biology and eighth-grade English Language Arts and math. Propensity score matching was used to generate comparable groups of students who were assessed using paper-pencil or computer-based formats. T-tests and generalized linear models were further used to examine test mode effect. Analyses revealed a small test mode effect for all three subjects such that students using the paper-based format achieved …

This article aims to disrupt the manifestations of whiteness in educational spaces. With an understanding that white supremacy is endemic in our society, this article is framed by the manifestations of whiteness in the form of white privilege, emotionality, and shame present within our schools and argues for the adoption of authentic and critical caring, love, and hope in our educational institutions. Most importantly, this article addresses the importance of rejecting the manifestations of whiteness in favor of equity, justice, and antiracism amid resistance in schools and concludes with practical recommendations to better prepare educators for their adoption of equity …

A Novel Approach To Social Justice Education, Jennifer Banas, Sara Gershon

Singular efforts in PK-12 settings to instill a social justice mindset will not achieve the same outcomes as social justice education infused throughout content area instruction. In collaboration with 10th-grade teachers, we developed and implemented a biblioguidance curriculum to develop students’ social justice and content area competency. Evaluation findings from the pilot implementation indicate there was a significant impact on some social justice competencies and all targeted content area competencies. Also, students appeared to recognize the benefits of a biblioguidance approach. In light of the outcomes, we celebrate the curriculum's successes and offer suggestions for ongoing improvement.

This is a commentary on why anti-racist education must include Asian American history, especially in the wake of increased hate crimes against Asians and anti-Asian bullying in schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first half of the paper discusses the issue and how the absence of Asian American history in K-12 and teacher preparation programs plays a role in perpetuating racism against Asians in the U.S. The second half of the paper presents how I have incorporated Asian American history into a social foundations of education course through two legal cases filed by Chinese Americans: Tape v. Achievement goal orientation has been studied within education for decades, and previous research has linked the construct to student achievement and engagement. This study uses the 2x2 achievement goal orientation as a framework for exploring high-impact practice (HIP) participation for approximately 8,000 college students across 15 different institutions participating in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Through a series of binary logistic regression analyses, results suggest students who employ a mastery-approach orientation are more likely to partake in a variety of beneficial HIPs, such as learning communities, research with faculty, service learning, study abroad, culminating experience, and formal leadership …

As more information was discovered about DNA, these developments became more specialized within different fields. Alec Jeffreys and his colleagues transformed the field of Forensic Science by utilizing the Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) method and the Southern blotting technique to develop discriminating profiles using an organic extraction. Death is an inescapable part of the human condition. Belief in an afterlife can help children retain a connection to the deceased and can be a useful tool for healing. I was deeply affected by the death of my beloved nana in 2018. After her death, my family asked me to be the storyteller for us. Thus, for my Honors Project at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), I decided to write a personal memoir on my family. This memoir explores how we fit into notions of womanhood and family in Appalachia, as well as studying the effects of intergenerational trauma on us. Qualitative research, in the form of the autoethnography, serves as the methodology for this project. In writing a creative memoir, I have transformed my personal to the academic.

Waterfowl can passively transport propagules through internal and external mechanisms. Internal transport, called endozoochory, occurs when propagules are consumed, carried and excreted in a new location. For this to be successful in waterfowl, propagules must be able to survive avian digestive processes. Gizzard size is the main contributor to mechanical digestion in birds and can change in response to diet variations. Potential for endozoochoric dispersal has been studied extensively with plant seeds, but research on branchiopod eggs is limited. Given the growing issue in healthcare of antibiotic resistance, effective and safe alternative treatment methods are required. One of these possible alternative treatment methods is bacteriotoxins including bacteriocins and tailocins. The focus of this study is a bacteriotoxin from Burkholderia cenocepacia (ATCC 25608), which was induced for toxin using a modified UV light induction procedure and tested against a variety of Pseudomonas and Burkholderia for its killing capacity. Various other pathogenic strains were then induced with UV light and tested. Previous research in STEM student retention rates showed a gap in knowledge regarding why this group of student experience higher rates of burnout than other groups of students. This study investigated the barriers STEM students at BGSU experienced. A survey was sent out to STEM and non-STEM students alike that asked questions regarding student’s personal history before attending BGSU, their course experiences at BGSU, and the levels of support they have outside of BGSU. Ohio has very minimal state-wide sex education laws, requiring only venereal disease education that has many similarities with abstinence-only education. Abstinence-only education has been shown to be ineffective in delaying first sex and lowering teen STDs, pregnancy, and birth rates. Within restricted life, individuals experienced changes in their social lives, eating habits, and day-to-day routine. Within this research study I chose to examine how individuals' lives changed directly from the year before the Covid-19 pandemic to the first year of domestic shutdown. A sample of BGSU undergraduate students responded to a survey questioning them on their behaviors, feelings, and attitudes among these time periods. The mate retention inventory (MRI) has been a valuable tool in the field of evolutionary psychology for the past 30 years. The goal of the current research is to subject the MRI to rigorous psychometric analysis using item response theory to answer three broad questions. Do the individual items of the MRI fit the scale well? Does the overall function of the MRI match what is predicted? Finally, do men and women respond similarly to the MRI?
