Influence Of A Single Swim Training On The Scapular Position And Isometric Muscle Strength In Young Swimmers, Annemie Van De Velde, Kristof De Mey, Patrick Calders, Ann Cools
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of our study was to investigate the influence of one swim training on isometric scapular muscle strength and the static position of the scapula in a sample of 30 healthy adolescent swimmers who were measured on two sessions at a local aquatic center. Fatigue as result of a single swim training may influence scapular position and strength. Measures included isometric evaluation of serratus anterior and upper trapezius peak isometric force using a push and shrug procedure, serratus anterior to upper trapezius strength ratios, and a semi-dynamic evaluation of lateral scapular displacement employing the Kibler method. When tested using …
Balance Specific Training In Water And On Land In Older Adults: A Pilot Study, Robyn Lin Anderson, Elizabeth Fishback
Balance Specific Training In Water And On Land In Older Adults: A Pilot Study, Robyn Lin Anderson, Elizabeth Fishback
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study compared the effectiveness of water and land based balance specific exercise in older adults. Twelve participants engaged in either water (W) or land (L) exercise consisting of a standard class and balance training. Both classes exercised for 60 minutes, 3 times a week for 8 weeks. Balance tests were administered pre- and postintervention. A 2x2 factorial ANOVA with repeated measures on the second factor (p < .05) demonstrated that participants of both groups improved significantly in functional reach, times “up & go,” step test right and left leg, and 6-min walk. No changes were found in tandem gait, one-leg stance or between the exercise conditions. These results suggest that when both water and land-based programs focus on balance specific training the mode of exercise is less important than the specificity of the intervention. I conclude that water exercise is an important mode to consider for improving balance in older adults due to the supporting nature and the safe exercise environment of the water.

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Undergraduate life sciences education needs an overhaul, as clearly described in the National Research Council of the National Academies' publication BIO 2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists. Among BIO 2010's top recommendations is the need to involve students in working with real data and tools that reflect the nature of life sciences research in the 21st century [1]. Education research studies support the importance of utilizing primary literature, designing and implementing experiments, and analyzing results in the context of a bona fide scientific question [1]–[12] in cultivating the analytical skills necessary to become a …

The Effects Of Strength Training In Hydrogymnastics For Middle-Age Women, Anelise Bueno Ambrosini, Michel Arias Brentano, Marcelo Coertjens, Luiz Fernando Martins Kruel
The Effects Of Strength Training In Hydrogymnastics For Middle-Age Women, Anelise Bueno Ambrosini, Michel Arias Brentano, Marcelo Coertjens, Luiz Fernando Martins Kruel
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study analyzed the effects of different strength training protocols carried out in hydrogymnastics workouts on the maximal strength of the shoulder horizontal flexors (SHF), shoulder horizontal extensors (SHE), and hip extensors (HE) muscles. Fifty-two women (ages 50.4 ± 14.15 years) were divided into two groups: hydrogymnastics with strength training without resistive equipment (HS) and hydrogymnastics with strength training using resistive equipment (HSE). The training lasted 12 weeks (2x a week) and the intensity was selected using Borg’s rating of perceived exertion scale for both groups. After 12 weeks of training, both groups showed an increase in maximal strength of …
Age-Dependent Autonomic Changes Following Immersion In Cool, Neutral, And Warm Water Temperatures, Kasee Hildenbrand, Bruce E. Becker, Rebekah Whitcomb, James P. Sanders
Age-Dependent Autonomic Changes Following Immersion In Cool, Neutral, And Warm Water Temperatures, Kasee Hildenbrand, Bruce E. Becker, Rebekah Whitcomb, James P. Sanders
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Aquatic immersion has been reported to produce a significant number of physiological changes in blood pressure, heart rate variability (HRV), autonomic nervous system (ANS), and core temperature in young healthy subjects. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of water immersion in younger and older populations, determining whether there are age related differences for ANS regulation measures in cool, neutral and warm water. Vitals and ANS measures were collected from two samples representing different age-groups in the general population. It was found that water immersion produced a significant number of important physiologic responses such as decreased blood …
Bunching Effect In Single-Molecule T4 Lysozyme Nonequilibrium Conformational Dynamics Under Enzymatic Reactions, Yuanmin Wang, H. Peter Lu
Bunching Effect In Single-Molecule T4 Lysozyme Nonequilibrium Conformational Dynamics Under Enzymatic Reactions, Yuanmin Wang, H. Peter Lu
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The bunching effect, implying that conformational motion times tend to bunch in a finite and narrow time window, is observed and identified to be associated with substrate enzyme complex formation in T4 lysozyme conformational dynamics under enzymatic reactions. Using single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy, we have probed T4 lysozyme conformational motions under the hydrolysis reaction of polysaccharide of E. coli 13 cell walls by monitoring the fluorescence resonant energy transfer (FRET) between a donor acceptor probe pair tethered to T4 lysozyme domains involving open close hinge-bending motions. On the basis of the single-molecule spectroscopic results, molecular dynamics simulation, and a random walk …
