Self-Reported Addiction To Pornography In A Nationally Representative Sample: The Roles Of Use Habits, Religiousness, And Moral Incongruence, Joshua B. Grubbs, Shane W. Kraus, Samuel L. Perry

Psychology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite controversies regarding its existence as a legitimate mental health condition, self-reports of pornography addiction seem to occur regularly. In the United States, prior works using various sampling techniques, such as undergraduate samples and online convenience samples, have consistently demonstrated that some pornography users report feeling dysregulated or out of control in their use. Even so, there has been very little work in US nationally representative samples to examine self-reported pornography addiction.

This research is part of a larger study of police crime—that is, crime committed by nonfederal sworn law enforcement officers with general powers of arrest—across the United States. In 2014, after several fatal on-duty police shootings garnered national media attention, our principal investigator, Philip Stinson, conducted a joint research project with The Washington Post to count the number of police officers charged with murder or manslaughter resulting from an on-duty shooting where the officer shot and killed someone. The results of the joint research project were published in The Washington Post on April 12, 2015, and The Washington Post was …

Race Is A Big Deal: The Childhood Experiences Of White, Female Teachers And The Development Of Critical Consciousness To "See, Judge And Act", Margaret Schauer Jan 2019

Race Is A Big Deal: The Childhood Experiences Of White, Female Teachers And The Development Of Critical Consciousness To "See, Judge And Act", Margaret Schauer

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study explores the stories of White, female teachers to understand moments of critical consciousness around race during childhood experiences that may have supported strong relationships with students of color in their teaching careers. Qualitative methods were employed to collect and analyze the stories of five White, female teachers in an urban school district. Findings include colorblind and White privileged stances from childhood that became more critical as participants began teaching students of color and adopted culturally relevant pedagogies and practices to meet their students’ needs. A need for teacher education and school professional development to move educators even further …

Inclusive Instructional Leadership: A Quasi-Experimental Study Of A Professional Development Program For Principals, Craig Howley, Aimee Howley, Jacqueline Yahn, Pamela Vanhorn, Deborah Telfer

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This quasi-experiment tested whether or not a statewide professional development program for principals yielded measurable changes in self-reported attitudes and practices. The two-year program combined training events at central and regional locations with on-site coaching. The program attempted (1) to change attitudes toward inclusion, broadly understood and grounded in social justice, and (2) to cultivate practices constituting inclusive instructional leadership. The program positions the practices as efforts to serve all students well (i.e., including students of color, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities). This quasi-experiment used a post-only nonequivalent group design with propensity score matching to equate treatment and …
