Historically, swimming pools have been a source of inequity when it comes to the distribution of recreation services in the United States. Many of the problems that correlate with the inequitable allocation of recreation resources including public swimming pools began with ideas about race, geography, poor planning practices and faulty policymaking (Rothstein, 2017). Moreover, one of the primary outcomes of engaged, inclusive planning is equity in the provision of recreation programs and facilities. In this essay, we offer a summary of key legal cases that help address questions related resource allocation related to public swimming pools. Finally, we present a …

Lgbtq Training For Aquatic Employees: Impact On Attitudes And Professional Competencies, Austin R. Anderson, Eric Knee, William D. Ramos

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study examined the impact of a LGBTQ diversity training on the attitudes and professional competencies of aquatic employees within a campus recreational sports setting. While diversity training is often discussed as a key component of inclusive aquatic programming, little empirical research examining the outcomes associated with such trainings exists. As such, members of the research team developed, implemented, and evaluated a four-month long training program consisting of one in-person training session and monthly inclusion handouts discussing issues related to the inclusion of LGBTQ participants. A comparative quantitative research design was used to measure employee’s attitudes towards the LGBTQ population …

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Aquatic Programming At Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Tiffany Monique Quash, Knolan C. Rawlins, Shaun M. Anderson

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This article provides a comprehensive examination of aquatic programming at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). HBCUs consist of public, private, 2-year, and 4-year institutions (U.S. Department of Education, 2018). Historically, HBCUs provided descendants of the enslaved access to higher education opportunities (Brown, Donahoo, & Bertrand, 2001). HBCUs now serve a more diverse community and the core focus remains on inclusion, social justice, diversity, empowerment, leadership, and cultural competence (Kennedy, 2012; Rawlins, 2018). Consequently, HBCUs may provide an ideal environment to address aquatic activity and the drowning disparity in the African American community. In the current study, researchers sent a …

Racial-Ethnic Differences In Punitiveness Among American Adults, Helena Pittroff Apr 2020

Racial-Ethnic Differences In Punitiveness Among American Adults, Helena Pittroff

Honors Projects

It is believed that the punitive values of the United States have had a direct positive correlation with the mass incarceration rates experienced in the United States. Many studies have attempted to understand variation in punitiveness across social groups, and have found that there are consistent racial differences that exist. Past research mostly focused on differences between Black and White individuals, but none has included the analysis of those of Hispanic origin. Using pooled data from the 2014, 2016, and 2018 General Social Survey (N = 7,753), the current project examines racial/ethnic differences in punitiveness for White, Black, and Hispanic …

Police Sexual Violence: A Few Bad Apples Or A Cultural Norm?, Philip M. Stinson, John Liederbach, Robert W. Taylor, Chloe Wentzlof, Natalie M. Wise, Bethany R. Sager, Marta Bettinelli Mar 2020

Police Sexual Violence: A Few Bad Apples Or A Cultural Norm?, Philip M. Stinson, John Liederbach, Robert W. Taylor, Chloe Wentzlof, Natalie M. Wise, Bethany R. Sager, Marta Bettinelli

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Approximately 1,600 police officers across the United States were arrested for sex-related crimes during the ten year period 2005-2014. The arrested officers were employed by more than 1,100 state and local law enforcement agencies located in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. These data suggest that police sexual violence is a problem involving more than a few “bad apples” and that the phenomenon of police sexual violence may be a cultural norm within many state and local law enforcement agencies.

This presentation was accepted for presentation at the annual meeting of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in …

The eSport industry has seen rapid growth over the previous decade with additional opportunities for participants to compete in competitive and casual environments. As such, the sport industry has taken notice of this increase in popularity and exposure for eSport. A recent call to arms by sport management scholars suggests that the field of sport management needs to broaden research endeavors to include analyses of eSport and eSport spaces. To that end, this investigation serves as one of the first that investigates the playing experiences of eSport participants with a particular focus on the presence of discrimination and hostility in …

The Perfect Game: An Ecological Systems Approach To The Influences Of Elite Youth And High School Baseball Socialization, Max Klein, Charles Macaulay, Joseph Cooper

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

The purpose of this study was to examine the elite youth and high school baseball socialization process as a whole and the role of professionalization and corporatization in this process. The unique nature of baseball’s development model in the United States (U.S.), through a dual-track feeder system (college or minor leagues) allows for a wide-range of challenges and sociological factors to influence elite youth and high school prospects. Understanding players’ experiences exposes these challenges and sociological factors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four former elite youth and high school baseball players, one parent of a player, two coaches, and two …

Behavioral Assessment Of Expert Talent Competencies: Analysis, Decision Making, And Written And Verbal Communication Skills, Homayoon Kord, George C. Thornton Iii

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Organizations face challenges of screening applicants for critical skills to serve in expert staff positions requiring interactions with line managers. Such positions require a special set of cognitive and interpersonal competencies. This study investigates the psychometric qualities of a new behavioral assessment method in use in an applied setting. Using data from a group of 219 finalists for positions in a large Iranian steel company, it examined the validity and fairness of the method in relation to other test and demographic information. Results showed evidence of convergent and discriminant validity and no discrimination against women or older candidates. The study …

Initial Reliability And Validity For The Critical Hire® - Screen, Tony Tatman, Matthew T. Huss

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Although the use of integrity testing during the application process has become a frequent practice in general business settings, their use has been rather nonexistent in the field of corrections. This limited use may stem from a lack of awareness about integrity tests in corrections, as well as a lack of integrity measures that have been normed and validated for use with correctional applicants. This study outlines the development, reliability, and validity for the Critical Hire®-Screen (CH-S), an overt integrity assessment measure developed for probation, parole, and other correctional officer job applicants. Four separate studies were conducted and provide evidence …

Validation Of The Data-Driven Decision-Making Efficacy And Anxiety Inventory (3d-Mea) With U.S. Pre-Service Teachers, Todd D. Reeves, Yasemin Onder, Beheshteh Abdi Jan 2020

Validation Of The Data-Driven Decision-Making Efficacy And Anxiety Inventory (3d-Mea) With U.S. Pre-Service Teachers, Todd D. Reeves, Yasemin Onder, Beheshteh Abdi

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Sound measurement of teacher self-efficacy and anxiety surrounding data-driven decision making is crucial in both theory-building and efficacy studies, as well as in practical contexts. The present study (N=457) thusly examined the validity of inferences drawn from the Data-Driven Decision-Making Efficacy and Anxiety Inventory (3D-MEA; Dunn et al., 2013) among U.S. pre-service teachers, a population with whom this instrument has never been fully and rigorously validated. Findings indicated a good fit of the hypothesized five-factor confirmatory factor model and reliable 3D-MEA scores in this population. The reported validity and reliability evidence implies that the 3D-MEA, originally intended for in-service teachers, …
