Institutional Strategy In Lodging Industries, L. Taylor Damonte Jan 1993

Institutional Strategy In Lodging Industries, L. Taylor Damonte

Visions in Leisure and Business

In addition to being viewed as a provider of sleeping accommodations, a lodging organization could also be viewed as a provider of tourists' experiences or even tourist destinations. For example, to some potential guests, a lodging organization may simply symbolize a supplier of overnight sleeping accommodations. To others it may symbolize facilities for. meetings, for recreational experiences, or both. Still other members of the lodging organization's task environment (the actors, organizations, and institutions with whom the business interacts) may view the business differently based on the impact the business has on their organizations. For example, to the cruise. industry the …

The Symbolic Meaning Of International Tourism, Arthur G. Neal

Visions in Leisure and Business

The objective of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework for viewing the social psychology of international tourism. The concern will be with reviewing selective works of sociologists and extending some of the themes growing out of this research. Special emphasis will be placed on the book by Dean MacCannell (8) entitled Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class and Eric Cohen's (2) typology of international tourist. The symbolic meaning of tourism is placed within the context of psychological modernity.

Discovering The Unique Synergy Potential Of Undergraduate Research And Tourism Service Needs, Deirdre Gibbons, Brian J. Hill Jan 1993

Discovering The Unique Synergy Potential Of Undergraduate Research And Tourism Service Needs, Deirdre Gibbons, Brian J. Hill

Visions in Leisure and Business

This paper explores the needs and benefits for using undergraduates as a resource at tourism University Centers. The purpose of undergraduate tourism programs varies, but programs strive to combine theory with application, and research plays a role in this process. Undergraduates stand to benefit from the managerial and decision-making skills they can learn through research. The number of university tourism research centers has increased worldwide. These centers often function on small budgets and have limited research centers, yet their services and clientele base are increasing. This paper explores how some universities have involved undergraduates in university tourism research, focusing heavily …

Reading Foreign Films Humanistically, Henry A. Garrity Jan 1993

Reading Foreign Films Humanistically, Henry A. Garrity

Visions in Leisure and Business

Fewer foreign films are appearing on American screens than 20 or 30 years ago. As a result, American audiences, unaccustomed to them, are often puzzled by what they see. Distributors of foreign films are tempted to import high culture films (drawn primarily from classic literary adaptations with some name recognition) or foreign box office successes, provided that the story is told in a linear fashion. The American attempting to see a foreign film in its native country must be prepared for any number of un-American elements, both thematic and technical. Americans depend on action-generated plots and want to know what …

The Effects Of A School-University Collaborative Change Project On Teacher Behaviors: A Case Study, James T. Hardy, Richard Ambrose Jan 1993

The Effects Of A School-University Collaborative Change Project On Teacher Behaviors: A Case Study, James T. Hardy, Richard Ambrose

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This is a case study of the effects on the behaviors of those teachers who were selected to reform an urban, inner-city elementary school from within during the first year of implementation. Using field notes gathered from weekly staff meetings, small group meetings, structured interviews and document analyses, researchers in this project found that when given the opportunity for school-based restructuring, teachers pursued teaching practices not previously contained in their teaching repertoire; assumed responsibility for their professional development; became interested in examining their practice and supporting it with documentation; developed direction and commitment to agreed-upon school goals; engaged in collaborative …

Developing Structural Equation Model, Randall E. Schmacker Jan 1993

Developing Structural Equation Model, Randall E. Schmacker

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Structural equation models have been developed in a number of academic disciplines to substantiate theory. The structural equation modeling approach involves developing measurement models to define latent variables and then establishing structural equations among the latent variables. This article was written to provide educational researchers with a better understanding of how to develop structural equation models. A deliberate attempt was made to minimize matrix and statistical notation so the reader could better understand the structural equation modeling approach.
