Evolution Of Sport And Leisure Management: Commonalities And Crosslinkages, Emilyn A. Sheffield, Kathleen A. Davis

Visions in Leisure and Business

Commercial/private recreation and sport management professional preparation programs are growing rapidly in response to increasing consumer demands for sport, fitness and leisure programming. Sport and leisure management academicians share a common heritage, similar challenges, and an awareness of sports and movement as the leisure choice of millions. Crosslinkages between sport and leisure management programs transcend departmental housing at colleges and universities and common challenges are shared in the areas of image, curriculum content, and scholarly productivity. In this paper, several of these challenges are analyzed and management strategies for strengthening professional preparation in sport and leisure management are reviewed.

Family Life Cycle Analysis: An Applied Example In A Tourism Setting, Deborah Kerstetter, Richard Gitelson Jan 1988

Family Life Cycle Analysis: An Applied Example In A Tourism Setting, Deborah Kerstetter, Richard Gitelson

Visions in Leisure and Business

Researchers have utilized the concept of family life cycle to better understand leisure behavior. In fact, it has been proposed as a potentially useful variable for both "recreation product companies and recreation administrators to use in segmenting markets and predicting demand". (9) The purpose of this study was to determine if there were significant differences between couples who traveled either with or without children. In all, 2,700 surveys were mailed to persons who had requested the North Carolina Travel Information Packet. A total of 1,887 (69.9%) were received. A factor analysis was performed on 26 reasons (benefits sought) for taking …

Leisure Education And The Family, Ann M. Rancourt Jan 1988

Leisure Education And The Family, Ann M. Rancourt

Visions in Leisure and Business

Having and utilizing free time is often a problem for individuals and for families. Family leisure education, focusing on lifestyles and leisure, or family wellness and the role of leisure may be a first step in addressing that problem. No other profession is specifically charged with the responsibility of educating for leisure; that charge is unique to the recreation and leisure profession. Families, as individuals and as a unit have significant time available for experiencing recreation and leisure, and their choices singularly and collectively impact on the unit as a whole. By exploring the components of leisure education, especially self …

Creative Strategies To Provide Family And Intergenerational Leisure Experiences, Jack Harper Jan 1988

Creative Strategies To Provide Family And Intergenerational Leisure Experiences, Jack Harper

Visions in Leisure and Business

Increased awareness of the need for providing family and intergenerational recreation experiences is growing. This awareness has occurred largely due to changes in the status of the family, and recognition that present programs are not suitable to serve the needs of families.

There are many barriers and constraints on leisure that affect the leisure participation of individuals and families. In order to overcome these constraints, creative strategies are necessary.

This paper reviews the constraints that prevent leisure participation and suggests some ways that recreation agencies can overcome them. The paper emphasizes the role of the public sector and examines strategies …

The Natural Discovery: For Family Enrichment And Relief Of Stress, Barbara Brock Jan 1988

The Natural Discovery: For Family Enrichment And Relief Of Stress, Barbara Brock

Visions in Leisure and Business

In a world of family deterioration and unrelieved stress, activities are needed which promote togetherness and relaxation. Nature study and outdoor discovery programs lend themselves well as stress-reducing and family-enriching activities. Natural Discovery activities may take the form of hiking, 'gardening, trail building, animal tracking, meditation, or cloud watching; as many options exist as stars in the night sky.

Keys to family enrichment include taking responsibility, finding inherent rewards, and individual discovery. Keys to stress relief include changing one's environment, exercising, and involvement in worthy endeavors. Not only do Natural Discovery activities contain all six keys, they are easily adaptable …

Visions in Leisure and Business

In modern America, family games and activities have largely disappeared. However, in the last decade a number of activities which have started to meet his needs. The focus is on New Games, an activity that the author knows and does best.

New Games is for all people regardless of age, size, sex or ability. Some games are old, some slightly changed, others new or invented by participants. Winning is not important--playing and having fun is. The rules are flexible and no equipment is needed, just people.

Changing a New Game is part of the game. New Games can be played …

Youth Competition: Problems And Solutions, Neil I. Cohen Jan 1988

Youth Competition: Problems And Solutions, Neil I. Cohen

Visions in Leisure and Business

The obsession Americans have with being #1 has led to an attitude of disdain toward all those who do not achieve the status of champion. We fail to realize that for every successful college athlete there are tens of thousands of college students. For every professional athlete there are hundreds of thousands of successful adults raising families and contributing to their communities and to society.

If there is any meaning to active participation, doing one's best within acceptable criteria, it appears to have been lost since that infamous day Howard Cosell coined the word "Superstar."

Parents expect and demand success …
