In this paper, we discuss the history of the two organizations and the history of other attempts at organizational consolidation; explore the similarities and differences in the organizations’ missions and values, structures, and activities; and consider each organization’s unique characteristics. We conclude with a set of recommendations concerning organizational consolidation and will raise a number of pertinent questions we feel the profession must address as it considers consolidating ACPA and NASPA.

Walking The Thin Line: The Challenges Of Policy Enforcement For Resident Assistants, Maureen E. Wilson, Amy S. Hirschy
Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications
Throughout the United States, resident assistants (RAs) manage residence hall environments, develop communities, and contribute to the educational mission of student affairs. RA positions provide leadership experiences, opportunities for personal and professional development, and the potential to influence and assist students with whom they live and work. Some, however, ask whether the RA job is too demanding for students (Dodge, 1990) and if too much is expected of RAs (Bierman & Carpenter, 1994). Housing professionals have been encouraged to reexamine student staffing patterns in light of resident learning needs, and, if the RA job is still crucial, to make it …

A Longitudinal Study Understanding Interpersonal Behavior Changes From Recreation Student To Professional, Patricia L. Janes, Mary S. Wisnom, Dean S. Pybus
Visions in Leisure and Business
Personality instrument have been used in college classrooms to help students understand how their interpersonal behaviors will effect their professional work. This investigation assessed 1) how students majoring in commercial recreation have changed in personality over a five year time frame, from traditional college student to practicing professional and 2) which demographic variables have influenced these changes.
Forty-six students completed a self-assessment personality inventory, Fundamental Interpersonal Relations OrientationBehavior (FIRO-B). Five years later, the same individuals completed the FIRO-B and demographic questionnaire. Twenty-six responded.

Dale Earnhardt's death provided an opportunity to examine the merchandiser phenomena in the sport of NASCAR racing. When Dale Earnhardt died, buyers and sellers were exchanging memorabilia at an unprecedented rate. The price of his memorabilia escalated significantly after his death. The purpose of this study was to examine the price fluctuation of selected memorabilia over a one year period. Results indicated that prices fluctuated dramatically, especially by type of merchandise and where the merchandise was sold. The prices stabilized and shifted dramatically based upon significant events.

Collecting Celebrity: The Meanings And Process Of Collecting Sports Memorabilia, Nancy E. Spencer, Jacquelyn Cuneen, Raymond Schneider
Visions in Leisure and Business
The sports memorabilia marketplace has experienced exponential growth since the advent of Internet auction sites such as eBay. While collectors were once constrained by local encounters with personal collectors, the Internet now facilitates buying and selling on an international scale. This study explores the phenomenon of collecting sports memorabilia as it has been transformed historically as well as more recently. Scholarly literature suggests that fascination with the famous may have begun in ancient Greece, although contemporary studies of celebrity examine a broader scope of subjects in addition to an odd array of items collected.
This study specifically addresses the following: …

Educators recognize the importance of understanding how students integrate community service learning with professional practice. This article provides insight into the student experience as expressed in the voices of pre-service social workers that completed community service field placements. The findings suggest a developmental model of learning with common themes that progressed from basic understanding to integration. Findings also suggest that service learning positively influenced the students in relation to personal and professional performance.
