Effects Of Home-Away Sequencing On The Length Of Best-Of-Seven Game Playoff Series, Christopher M. Rump Jan 2006

Effects Of Home-Away Sequencing On The Length Of Best-Of-Seven Game Playoff Series, Christopher M. Rump

Applied Statistics and Operations Research Faculty Publications

We analyze the number of games played in a seven-game playoff series under various homeaway sequences. In doing so, we employ a simple Bernoulli model of home-field advantage in which the outcome of each game in the series depends only on whether it is played at home or away with respect to a designated home team. Considering all such sequences that begin and end at home, we show that, in terms of the number of games played, there are four classes of stochastically different formats, including the popular 2-3 and 2-2 formats both currently used in National Basketball Association (NBA) …

Retention Of African Americans In Gifted Education: Lessons Learned From Higher Education, James L. Moore, Donna Y. Ford, Delila Owens, Ted Hall, Melendez Byrd, Malik Henfield, Gilman W. Whiting Jan 2006

Retention Of African Americans In Gifted Education: Lessons Learned From Higher Education, James L. Moore, Donna Y. Ford, Delila Owens, Ted Hall, Melendez Byrd, Malik Henfield, Gilman W. Whiting

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Predominately White institutions of higher education have focused a considerable amount of attention on the underrepresentation of African American and other ethnically diverse students in colleges and universities. To address this problem, colleges and universities have focused not just on recruitment but also on the retention of African American students in these predominately White institutions. They have recognized that efforts to address underrepresentation cannot be limited to recruitment efforts; they must also consider factors associated with retention in the underrepresentation equation. We contend that gifted education embodies many of the same attributes, challenges, and barriers that predominately White colleges and …

Pedagogy Of Respect: The Inter-Generational Influence Of Black Women, Kenneth J. Fasching-Varner Jan 2006

Pedagogy Of Respect: The Inter-Generational Influence Of Black Women, Kenneth J. Fasching-Varner

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

There is a large corpus of literature that not only speaks to the nature and qualities of Black women teachers, but that further disrupts the way these educators have been historically located at the margins of 'education,' by highlighting their political and culturally relevant/responsive approaches (Ladson- Billings, 1992/1994/2000; Gay, 2000; Beauboeuf-Lafontant, 1997/1999/2002; Irvine, 1989/1990/2003; Irvine & Hill, 1990; Collins, 2000; Siddle Walker, 1996/2005; Dixson, 2002/2005; Dingus, 2003, among others). This work, that looks at the larger political movement of Black women teachers, comes at a time when researchers are beginning to better blur the traditional boundaries that defined ‘center’ and …

Presidential Address: How Do We Measure Up? Capturing The Complexities Of Educational Growth, Janet K. Holt Jan 2006

Presidential Address: How Do We Measure Up? Capturing The Complexities Of Educational Growth, Janet K. Holt

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Educational policy frequently refers to change in some form and accountability measures are enacted to ensure the change is occurring. Yet, the most critical education decisions that alter the educational landscape are often made with static test score data and do not take into account the pattern of growth that may be occurring, even though growth modeling methodology is available and accessible. In this paper, two applications of multilevel growth modeling methodology to educational issues are illustrated. A call is made to replace the current practice of using static data for critical education decisions with growth modeling methods that allow …
