“Float First:” Trapped Air Between Clothing Layers Significantly Improves Buoyancy On Water After Immersion, Martin James Barwood, Victoria Bates, Geoffrey Long, Michael J. Tipton

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Approximately 450,000 people drown annually worldwide. The capacity of immersed adults and children to float in clothing is less well understood, but it is possible that air trapped between clothing layers increases buoyancy. Study 1 (n = 24) quantified this buoyancy and the consequence of any buoyancy by measurement of airway freeboard (mouth to water level distance). Study 2 examined the capability of children (n = 29) to float with freeboard used as the outcome measure and is expressed as a percentage of occasions that freeboard was achieved. Buoyancy (Newtons; N) was provided for winter clothing as 105 [+ 12], …

The Subjective Experiences Of Those Afraid In Water, Belinda Eve Stillwell Feb 2011

The Subjective Experiences Of Those Afraid In Water, Belinda Eve Stillwell

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this study was to investigate the subjective experiences of individuals who are afraid in water. Semistructured interviews examined participants’ history of fear in water, past experiences with traditionally taught swimming lessons and what they believed should be taught and how. Results showed that all three participants had a history of traumatic water experiences. Two of the three participants had negative experiences in traditionally taught swimming lessons. The third participant never took part in formalized instruction. All three had insightful suggestions as to what they felt they needed to learn in swimming lessons and how their instructors could …

Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Students Coming Out At The Intersection Of Spirituality And Sexual Identity, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart, Shaunna Payne Gold

Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications

In this study, the researchers examined how lesbian, gay, and bisexual undergraduate students negotiated and defined their spiritual identities during the coming-out process. Although there were varied responses, the findings suggest that students describe spirituality as acceptance, personal relationships with a powerful essence, and connections to nature. When navigating multiple identities, students experienced various levels of intersectionality including irreconciliation, progressive development, arrested development, completed development, and reconciliation.

Application Of Intergroup Contact Theory To The Integrated Workplace: Setting The Stage For Inclusion, Jeanne A. Novak, Kelsey Jo Feyes, Kimberly A. Christensen

School of Counseling and Special Education Faculty Publications

Social inclusion in community work settings remains an elusive outcome for many employees with intellectual disabilities. This study explored how the structure of work relationships with colleagues facilitates or inhibits social integration. Data were collected on 22 employees with disabilities through semi-structured interviews with six employment specialists and participant observations of six employees at their community worksites. Data were interpreted using intergroup contact theory, a longstanding theory within the intergroup relations literature that addresses the role of contact in reducing prejudice toward members of negatively stereotyped groups. As predicted by intergroup contact theory, interviews and observations revealed that coworkers were …

Religion, Forced Migration And Schooling: Varying Influences Of Religious Capital Among Iraqi Christian Refugee Students In Jordan And The Usa, Bruce A. Collet

School of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications

This study is based on focus groups conducted with Christian Iraqi refugee secondary school students in the metropolitan Detroit area, and interviews with staff from volunteer aide agencies, non-governmental organizations, churches, and independent researchers in both Amman, Jordan as well as the Detroit metropolitan area. The article examines varying influences of religious capital among Iraqi Christian students. Examination of the operation of this capital within the context of the two countries’ economic and foreign policy interests including their refugee policies exposes macro-level forces that render religious capital to function in countervailing manners. Iraqi Christian students in both Amman and Detroit …

Fertility Following An Unintended First Birth, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford Jan 2011

Fertility Following An Unintended First Birth, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford

Sociology Faculty Publications

Research on unintended fertility tends to focus on births as isolated events. This article expands previous research by examining the relationship between early unintended childbearing and subsequent fertility dynamics in the United States. Data from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth show that 27.5% of mothers report an unintended first birth. We use event history methods to show that these women are significantly more likely than women with an intended first birth to have an unintended second birth than to either have no second birth or an intended second birth, net of sociodemographic characteristics. An unintended first birth also …

Value Of Emotional Intelligence For High Performance Coaching - A Commentary, Deborah A. O'Neil Jan 2011

Value Of Emotional Intelligence For High Performance Coaching - A Commentary, Deborah A. O'Neil

Management Faculty Publications

In their article, Jonathan Chan and Clifford Mallett present the case for the positive effects that high-performance coaches can realize by incorporating leadership qualities that include ‘soft skills’ like emotional intelligence into their coaching repertoires. The authors propose that coaches’ emotional intelligence can augment their technical skills to encourage high performance in their athletes, and manage the dynamics between coach, athlete, team and performance.
