Cognitive Styles Impact On Student Self-Efficacy, Ashten Graham
Cognitive Styles Impact On Student Self-Efficacy, Ashten Graham
Honors Projects
This study will examine the impact the use differentiated instruction, based on cognitive styles, has on students’ self-efficacy. In order to accomplish this, students will be asked to explore what cognitive styles they ascribe to. Then after varied lessons attributing to different learning styles, students will complete a survey to gauge their level of self-efficacy. The goal of this sequence is to determine whether there is a relationship between cognitive styles and self-efficacy. It will also provide insight on how to create the best learning environment to promote academic success through the use of cognitive styles and attention to self-efficacy …

The purpose of this research was to assess the services needed by offenders who are soon going to be released. As a result, we recruited all incarcerated persons in jails, prisons and community-based correctional facilities (CBCFs) in Ohio who would be returning to the Wood County area upon release (i.e., we recruited incarcerated individuals who had a Wood County, OH address as their last place of residence prior to their most recent incarceration, or were arrested in and processed through Wood County courts). We designed a survey for individuals in Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) custody containing questions …

Evaluating A Project-Based Learning Approach To The Bgsu Business Curriculum, Kara Harmeyer
Evaluating A Project-Based Learning Approach To The Bgsu Business Curriculum, Kara Harmeyer
Honors Projects
Inspiration for my honors project came from an assignment that I completed in a previous marketing course. This assignment is the only experience that I have had with project-based learning, but it certainly made an impact on me. My honors project presented the perfect opportunity for learning more about project-based learning and the way it is used in educational settings. In addition to the benefits and challenges associated with project-based learning, I also researched the characteristics and learning styles of millennial students to understand whether project based-learning is compatible. In conclusion, I evaluated how project-based learning could be utilized in …

Differences In Expectations Of Cleanliness Among Students At Bowling Green State University, Ashley Meehan
Honors Projects
Objective: To determine if there are significant differences in perceptions of cleanliness between different demographic groups of undergraduate students at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). Methods: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to all undergraduate students at BGSU’s main campus through the campus email system, and a two-sample t-test was used to analyze data. Results: There were significant differences in cleanliness perceptions between females and males and between Health Science and non-Health Science students. No significant differences were detected between first-year and second, third, and fourth-years students. Discussion: Possible psychological explanations of these differences were offered, and it is not possible …

For my Honors Project I decided to create a set of exercise cards for children with autism. The front of each card had a picture symbolizing the exercise/activity, and on the back included directions, supplies and tips to complete the activity. The following is a selection of a few exercise cards from each of the four exercise sections, as well as the title card, table of contents cards, information cards, and source cards.
The Identity And Identity: The Extant Of National And Regional Identity On Albanian Students, Nina Gjoçi
The Identity And Identity: The Extant Of National And Regional Identity On Albanian Students, Nina Gjoçi
Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)
This study explores how the perceived cultural identity as a social and individual concept impacts the effectiveness of communication among Albanian students in Albania, Kosova, and the FRY of Macedonia. The new democracies in South East Europe and European Union integration aspiration have raised the sensitivity toward culture and identity in every aspect of social life. This new process of building, rebuilding, changing, and shaping new democratic institutions requires at the same time new ways to communicate and negotiate. What before democracy was silenced, and implicit, now it has come into the open for evaluation and discussion. Now, as the …
Cbpr And A Multitrack Model Of Development: A Proposed Critical Ethnography, Jeanette M. Dillon
Cbpr And A Multitrack Model Of Development: A Proposed Critical Ethnography, Jeanette M. Dillon
Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)
The modernization paradigm of development still dominates in practice, according to Sparks (2007), and apparently, that is only one indicator of how the participatory development paradigm has not lived up to its elegant theoretical promise. This paper argues that the community-based participatory paradigm can live up to its promise as it works in tandem with the dominant paradigm, despite seemingly antithetical epistemologies. A critical ethnography of a community-based participatory research project in a Midwest university health communication class is proposed to assess this contention. Some research questions that could be addressed include: Do group members connect their experience to the …
Using Cognitive Dissonance Theory In Reducing Racism And Prejudice, Esen Saygin Koc
Using Cognitive Dissonance Theory In Reducing Racism And Prejudice, Esen Saygin Koc
Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)
In this paper, Leon Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance is suggested for utilization in order to reduce and/or diminish racism in society. Leon Festinger’s theory posits that humans strive to be consistent, mostly internally (thus the term cognitive); when a cognitive dissonance is experienced, an individual feels a psychological uncomfort and therefore attempts to reduce the tension created by that particular experience. In this paper, I suggest specific ways of combatting racism in daily life, particularly in communities that are mostly homogenous and/or have high levels of (potential or active) racism. It is important to note that, I use the …

Avengers Reluctantly Assemble: A Post-Racial And Xenophobic Criticism Of The Avengers, Gabriel Cruz
Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)
This study endeavors to rhetorically criticize the ideological underpinnings found in the Marvel comic book film adaptation Marvel’s The Avengers (2012). Specifically this study involves multiple viewings of the movie along with analysis of the ideological themes of postracism and xenophobia as evident in the film’s dialogue, plot, character interactions and various other narrative devices and details. Adaptations of comic books have a long history within film and will continue to have a significant box-office presence for the foreseeable future. The Marvel Cinematic Universe alone, which began its present continuity in 2008 with Iron Man, will have produced twenty-one films …

Another Country: When Your Nation Doesn’T Consider You To Be A Citizen, William B. Daniels Ii
Another Country: When Your Nation Doesn’T Consider You To Be A Citizen, William B. Daniels Ii
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
I plan to show how the characters in Another Country uncover the inherently racist and homophobic requirements for citizenship in a nation. The novel Another Country by African American author James Baldwin (1924-1987) exposes the fallible nature of hetero-normative and racial ideals that narrowly define a model citizen of a nation-state. The queer interracial relationships in the novel, particularly between the main character Rufus and his lover Eric, transgress the boundaries of nation, race, and sexuality, thus revealing the illusionary nature of categorizations that are defined and applied by nation-state apparatuses in order to discriminate and maintain uniformity. In addition …
The Perpetual Other: Native American Representation In Documentaries, Julia E. Largent
The Perpetual Other: Native American Representation In Documentaries, Julia E. Largent
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
When an individual uses an Internet search engine to find images of Native Americans, the person will most likely find that most of the images are paintings of the Native American warrior or are older black and white portraits. After searching for other races, such as Asian American or African American, the search is more likely to come up with contemporary images of people playing sports, in school, or with their families. Why is there such a stark difference? Why are Native Americans so often thought about as only in the past? From the early days of books and portraits …
Popular Culture And Individual Empowerment In The Global World, Rama Alapati
Popular Culture And Individual Empowerment In The Global World, Rama Alapati
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Popular culture studies are central to the study of Liberal Arts, which enhance the spirit of the academia. They help people to understand their own culture, appreciate it, and grow up as participating members of the community. The present study focuses attention to analyze popular culture in relation to the domains of governance and self-help literature. The study is significant because it helps understand the trajectory adopted for individual empowerment.
Existence of multicultural societies across the Globe is more in the present day as the world has become a global village. It can, therefore, be understood that popular culture studies …
The Impact Of The Second World War On The Decolonization Of Africa, Erin Myrice
The Impact Of The Second World War On The Decolonization Of Africa, Erin Myrice
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
This project discusses the Second World War as a catalyst for African political freedom and independence. The war helped build strong African nationalism, which resulted in a common goal for all Africans to fight for their freedom. World War II led to decolonization of Africa by affecting both Europe and Africa militarily, psychologically, politically, and economically. The Second World War was instrumental in arming Africans with the military knowledge and leadership skills they would utilize when fighting for their own independence. One of these skills included the ability to communicate and work together, which had previously been an issue among …

Truth Games: Negotiating Power, Identity And The Spirit Of Resistance In Contemporary South African Art, Dominique Pen
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
Sue Williamson has come to hold an esteemed and influential role in the South African art world not only for her literary gifts as the author of several books about South African art (perhaps most notably her first book, Resistance Art in South Africa, published in 1989), but also as an artist whose work often deals with the social, political, and conceptual repercussions of apartheid in South Africa. Indeed, much of her development as an artist stemmed from her activism during the struggle against apartheid in South Africa beginning in the late 1970’s and has evolved to include the contemporary …
Caribbean Commodity: The Marketing And Consumption Of Black Bahamian Female Identity, Dellareese Higgs
Caribbean Commodity: The Marketing And Consumption Of Black Bahamian Female Identity, Dellareese Higgs
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
Abstract
In this essay, I explore the Bahamas’ connection to tourism, tracing and defining how it became the central aspect of the country’s economy, and how whiteness was re-deployed in this new era of tourism. I examine the impact of these phenomena on the identity constructions of the local culture, and articulate women’s placement in the effort to re-invent the Bahamas as the ultimate tourist destination. While the essay specifically documents the nature of tourism in the Bahamas, it focuses primarily on the women within tourism’s many fronts of cultural change and marginalization. I use the term ‘white tourist culture’ …
Exploring The Context Of Coached Masters Swim Programs: A Narrative Approach, Scott Rathwell, Bettina Callary, Bradley W. Young
Exploring The Context Of Coached Masters Swim Programs: A Narrative Approach, Scott Rathwell, Bettina Callary, Bradley W. Young
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Knowing the psychosocial themes in a specific sport context allows us to understand athletes’ experiences and informs approaches of coaches (Côté et al., 1995) and sport programmers (Danish et al., 2005). Few qualitative studies focus on psychosocial conditions of adult athletes in coached sport settings. The purpose of this study was to capture important psychosocial themes from the perspective of Masters swimmers involved in day-to-day coached swimming environments. Data were collected using semi-structured open-ended interviews with 10 competitive swimmers (5 male, 5 female; M age = 53 years; range: 45-65 years). Analyses revealed four over-arching themes that represented athletes’ a) …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The study compared scores obtained by the 10 highest and lowest ranked athletes on the men’s 2013 World Championship Tour (WCT) of surfing. Significant differences (p<.001) were identified between the two groups’ average wave scores, average total scores and total heats competed. In addition, the average standard deviation (SD) of each surfer’s wave score was significantly different (p = .020) between the two groups. Significant moderate correlations were identified between athletes’ average placing and the SD of their wave scores (r = .596, p = .006), and total heat scores (r=.474, p=.035). Repeated measures ANOVA also revealed significant differences between heat scores obtained during the final and all previous rounds (p < .001-.041). In conclusion, higher ranked surfers achieved higher wave scores and heat totals, and were more consistent in scoring. On average, a 1.04 point increase per wave score would allow a bottom 10 ranked surfer to reach the top 10, a small but impactful gain.
Public Understanding And Knowledge Of Rip Currents And Beach Safety In The Uk, Eleanor Woodward, Emily Beaumont, Paul Russell, Ross Macleod
Public Understanding And Knowledge Of Rip Currents And Beach Safety In The Uk, Eleanor Woodward, Emily Beaumont, Paul Russell, Ross Macleod
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Rip currents present a severe hazard for water users on beaches and account for the greatest cause of lifeguard rescues worldwide. The physical dynamics of rip currents are well studied, and more recently, the social and behavioural science research surrounding human interaction of rip currents has been expanding, providing a social perspective and feeding into public education strategies. The aim of this study was to assess levels of public understanding of rip currents and beach safety on UK beaches. A questionnaire was undertaken (N = 407) during the summer of 2012 on four beaches. Beach users had a poor knowledge …

Radiophobia And Trauma: Examining The Lasting Effects Of The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, Lydiarose Mockensturm
International ResearchScape Journal
The Fukushima nuclear disaster of March 2011 – unlike the earthquake and tsunami leading up to it – was not experienced directly or immediately for many. Its effects were, however, experienced belatedly, in the form of displacement and radiophobia, which have had a significant psychological impact on survivors. Moreover, excessive media coverage of the disaster allowed it to have a global impact not seen during previous nuclear disasters. Shion Sono’s film The Land of Hope, released in Japan in October of 2012, helps to illustrate the traumatic nature of a nuclear crisis through issues such as dislocation, media coverage, …
Twelve Years A Terror: U.S. Impact In The 12-Year Civil War In El Salvador, Cara E. Mckinney
Twelve Years A Terror: U.S. Impact In The 12-Year Civil War In El Salvador, Cara E. Mckinney
International ResearchScape Journal
This essay explores the impacts of the United States government and military in the civil war in El Salvador in a comprehensive historical study. Through the presence of monetary aid, a disregard for the human rights of people in El Salvador, and the presence of U.S. trained soldiers at the then School of Americas and the current Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, the U.S. prolonged and augmented the negative effects of the Salvadoran Civil War.
