The activities were developed and presented over the course of the six-week P.L.A.C.E. Program, held at the Montessori School of Bowling Green. Participants met four times to take part in a guided exercise class, and enjoy other activities. At these sessions, participants were …

Core Reflection As Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Implications For Teacher Education, Aaron Samuel Zimmerman Jan 2017

Core Reflection As Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Implications For Teacher Education, Aaron Samuel Zimmerman

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

In this commentary, I explore a method of teacher reflection developed by Korthagen and colleagues, which they refer to as “core reflection” (Korthagen, Kim, & Green, 2013). Specifically, I have noticed that the process of “core reflection” bears a strong resemblance to self-fulfilling prophecies and other “placebo effects” observed in many medical and psychological studies (Price, Finniss, & Benedetti, 2008). It may be the case that this particular brand of teacher reflection is effective, not because teachers actually possess particular character strengths or virtues (as the method supposes), but because core reflection functions as a self-fulfilling prophecy: i.e., expectations bring …

Examining A First Grader’S Writing Through A Habermasian Lens: Implications For The Teaching And Learning Of Writing, Cheu-Jey Lee

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper investigates the relationship between Habermas’s theory of communicative action (TCA) and writing. It begins with a review of the features of Habermas’s TCA: validity claims, their corresponding criteria, and the ideal speech situation. Then TCA is applied in analyzing a first grader’s written notes. Finally, the implications for the teaching and learning of writing are discussed from a Habermasian perspective. This paper demonstrates the applicability of Habermas’s TCA in examining writing. It also shows how TCA informs the teaching and learning of writing.

School Level And Other Differences In Illinois Teachers’ Use Of Data To Inform Instruction, Todd Reeves Jan 2017

School Level And Other Differences In Illinois Teachers’ Use Of Data To Inform Instruction, Todd Reeves

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Using data to inform classroom decision-making is a salient facet of teachers’ professional practice. However, some evidence suggests that teacher data use practices are unevenly distributed within and across school contexts. In response, the present study examined school-level (elementary, middle, and high) differences in four categories of data use practices among public school teachers (N=303) from at least 68 schools and 52 districts in Illinois, USA. Concomitantly investigated were differences in data use practices by school locale (city, town, suburban, rural), school socioeconomic status, teacher experience, and teacher primary position. Multiple regression analyses revealed school-level differences for two categories of …

Measuring Teacher Dispositions: Identifying Workplace Personality Traits Most Relevant To Teaching Professionals, Yuankun Yao, Alexander Pagnani, Matt Thomas, Luisa Abellan-Pagnani, Terrell Brown, Dawna Lisa Buchanan

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

What personality traits represent dispositions most relevant to teaching professionals? Could an instrument reflecting work personality traits for a wide variety of professions provide a valid assessment of dispositions for teacher candidates? This study analyzed the internal structure of a state mandated dispositions assessment that was adapted from the Workplace Personality Inventory II. The analyses found that the hypothesized factor structure lacked support from the data. The second stage of the study explored and identified a measurement model consisting of select personality traits most relevant to teaching professionals. The results of the study have implications for educational agencies and teacher …

Contradictions Of Adolescent Self-Construal: Examining The Interaction Of Ethnic Identity, Self-Efficacy And Academic Achievement, Margaret Zoller Booth, Sara Abercrombie, Christopher J. Frey

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This research examines the relationship between ethnicity, ethnic identity, self-efficacy, and academic achievement within a multi-ethnic mid-sized city in the US Midwest. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, middle and high school adolescents (Fall, N=482; Spring, N=392) were surveyed and interviewed over the course of one year to investigate the interaction of these variables within the context of their school climate. Quantitative analysis indicated that prior Math achievement and ethnic identity predicted self efficacy. The qualitative results support this finding, indicating that for some minority groups, a strong ethnic identity may be a protective factor in efficacy development. The complexity of the …

High Achievers From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds: The Critical Role Of Disciplinary Climate And Grit, Haigen Huang, Hao Zhu Jan 2017

High Achievers From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds: The Critical Role Of Disciplinary Climate And Grit, Haigen Huang, Hao Zhu

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of this study was to examine whether school disciplinary climate and grit predicted low socioeconomic status (SES) students being high achievers in mathematics and science with a representative sample of 15-year-old students in the United States. Our analysis, using a two-level logistic hierarchical linear model (HLM), indicated both disciplinary climate and grit were significantly associated with low-SES students’ high achievement in math and science. Low-SES students who perceived themselves as having a higher level of grit and whose classrooms had better disciplinary climate were much more likely to be high achievers. This finding provided supplemental evidence to the …

Digitized And Decoupled? Teacher Sensemaking Around Educational Technology In A Model 1:1 Program, Stacy Gherardi Jan 2017

Digitized And Decoupled? Teacher Sensemaking Around Educational Technology In A Model 1:1 Program, Stacy Gherardi

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This mixed-methods study utilized surveys and interviews to analyze teacher sensemaking in a widely acclaimed 1:1 laptop program in a predominantly low-income, predominantly Latino school district. Quantitative and qualitative measures found that teachers across the district used technology in similar ways and that technology strongly increased differentiated instruction, changed how students accessed knowledge, and had a positive impact on assessment practices; a negative relationship between technology and parent engagement was found. Teacher perceptions of the 1:1 program varied widely and were dependent on both personal and organizational factors. Findings suggested a sensemaking process in which teacher beliefs were often decoupled …

Sniffing Out The Secret Poison: Selection Bias In Educational Research, Daniel A. Showalter, Luke B. Mullet Jan 2017

Sniffing Out The Secret Poison: Selection Bias In Educational Research, Daniel A. Showalter, Luke B. Mullet

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Selection bias is a persistent, and often hidden, problem in educational research. It is the primary obstacle standing in between increasingly available large education datasets and the ability to make valid causal inferences to inform policymaking, research, and practice (Stuart, 2010). This article provides an accessible discussion on the importance of understanding selection bias in educational research. Although a general explanation on how to remove selection bias is beyond the scope of this article, the reader is guided through an example of this removal process. Specifically, a propensity score analysis is used on a nationally representative dataset to examine whether …

Knots In Thinking And The Problem Of Enactment: Exploring The Classroom Thinking Of Three Novice Teachers, Aaron Samuel Zimmerman

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Novice teachers begin their careers with certain instructional ideals; however, in practice, novice teachers tend to enact classroom practices that only partially align with these ideals—a phenomenon referred to as the problem of enactment. This article explores this phenomenon by investigating the classroom thinking of three novice teachers. Using stimulated-recall interviews, these teachers were asked to describe the deliberative decisions they made while teaching and to rate how well these decisions aligned with their instructional ideals. It was found that when novice teachers perceived only partial alignment between their enacted decisions and their instructional ideals, teachers tended to experience simultaneous …

The purpose of this study was to examine whether student athletes at a Division I university knew what their mental health resources were; if they felt that mental health was an issue that affected their team and to improve our understanding of why student athletes aren’t seeking help. 10 participants were recruited through the athletic department at …

Reaction Time As A Measure Of Neuroplasticity After Aerobic Exercise, Ahmed Mostafa Jan 2017

Reaction Time As A Measure Of Neuroplasticity After Aerobic Exercise, Ahmed Mostafa

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Until the 1960s it was commonly-assumed in neuropsychology that the adult human nervous system was hard-wired and had extremely limited capacity to change. Recently research has demonstrated that this earlier assumption was not accurate and that the adult human nervous system indeed is quite plastic and in a state of continuous change. Further, physical exercise has been demonstrated to promote positive effects on the adult human nervous system as a result of increased blood flow and modified neurotransmitters and neutrophins. These effects are hypothesized to improve the synaptic connectivity and promote neurogenesis, both of which are believed to play an …
