Ethics And The Policing Of African Americans And Those Of African Descent In America, Richard Brown, Abhijeet Shirsat Feb 2018

Ethics And The Policing Of African Americans And Those Of African Descent In America, Richard Brown, Abhijeet Shirsat

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

What role does ethics play in policing Black America? The criminal justice system has a race problem (Obama, 2017; Alexander, 2010). Data shows that racial disparities exist within corrections (Robertson, 2014). The numbers of minorities that are entangled within the courts, the number of arrests made by police and the numbers of unarmed blacks who have recently been killed by the police, support the notion that who have been given a pass by county prosecutors and states attorneys (Chaney & Robertson, 2015). Amadou Diallo, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and John Crawford are just a few of the names …

Pop Music As E-Civism: Negotiating Change Through Subaltern Voices In Burkina Faso, Lassane Ouedraogo Feb 2018

Pop Music As E-Civism: Negotiating Change Through Subaltern Voices In Burkina Faso, Lassane Ouedraogo

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

In 2014, a popular revolution led by a group of underground pop musicians ousted a 27-year regime in Burkina Faso. In attempting to find meaning in how these musicians were able to mobilize millions of people across the country under the banner of Le Balai Citoyen (the Citizen Broom), I studied their works before the 2014 revolution. I found that pop music from Burkina Faso represents a subaltern discursive engagement voice whereby lyrics and video frames disseminate a counter-discourse and call for action against government malpractices. By examining the lyrics and video frames as a discursive voice in 40 YouTube …

A Life Elsewhere?: Afropolitanist Reading Of Race Struggle, Identity And Home In Chimamanda Adichie’S Americanah, Hammed Oluwadare Adejare Feb 2018

A Life Elsewhere?: Afropolitanist Reading Of Race Struggle, Identity And Home In Chimamanda Adichie’S Americanah, Hammed Oluwadare Adejare

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Globalization and global movements have had significant impacts on the kinds of literary works that have been produced by writers of African descent in the 21st century. There is currently the pervading popularity of diasporic writing, a kind which has come to be associated with works produced by a community of immigrant writers, either with common ancestral homelands or shared immigration experiences. Many of these works have painted African immigrants as leaving their home countries because of desperate situations. Many have also presented the narratives of double- trouble for Africans who fled their homes only to be confronted with …

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study is part of a larger research project on police crime in the United States. Police crimes are those criminal offenses committed by sworn law enforcement officers who have the general powers of arrest. Profit-motivated police crime involves officers who use their authority of position to engage in crime for personal gain. This study reports the findings on 1,591 cases where a law enforcement officer was arrested for one or more profit-motivated crimes during the seven-year period 2005-2011. The profit-motivated arrest cases involved 1,396 individual officers employed by 782 state, local, special, constable, and tribal law enforcement agencies located …

Justifying A Standard Of Death, Michael Milhim Jan 2018

Justifying A Standard Of Death, Michael Milhim

Honors Projects

There are three major positions in the legal definition of death debate: the cardio-pulmonary standard, the whole-brain standard, and the higher-brain standard. Prominent arguments for each standard appeal to a theory of human persistence. I’ll contend that these arguments fail for two reasons: the metaphysical underpinnings of the arguments are not decisive, and even if they are decisive, they may not be the right policy to enact. The later of these is more practically important than the former.

Investigating Critical Thinking In Experiential Learning, Megan Gillen Jan 2018

Investigating Critical Thinking In Experiential Learning, Megan Gillen

Honors Projects

This action research project reviews the relevant literature on experiential learning to research whether experiential learning promotes critical thinking in a middle school science classroom. Based on constructivism, research shows experiential learning, particularly problem-based learning, increases motivation, promotes professional skills, and multiple strategies used to solve problems. Even though its effects are difficult to measure on standardized tests and most of these research studies are small qualitative studies, this teaching method’s benefits are significant enough to warrant its implementation. The results from this study show no conclusive evidence that experiential learning promotes critical thinking. Suggestions for expanding the action research …

"At This Age, This Is Who I Am": Cece Winans, Exilic Consciousness, And The American Popular Music Star System, Angela Nelson Jan 2018

"At This Age, This Is Who I Am": Cece Winans, Exilic Consciousness, And The American Popular Music Star System, Angela Nelson

School of Cultural & Critical Studies Faculty Publications

My paper addresses the intersections of the American popular music star system, Black female Gospel singers, Gospel Music, and the exilic consciousness of the Sanctified Church with special attention to life and music of Gospelwoman Priscilla Marie “CeCe” Winans Love. I argue that CeCe Winans and the marketing campaign for Winans’ album Let Them Fall in Love, is indicative of the encroachment of American popular music’s star system into self-elected “exiled” Gospel Music and into the lives of “exiled” Gospelwomen. Gospelwomen are 20th and 21st century urban African American Protestant Christian women who are paid for singing Gospel Music and …

The Role Of Data Analysis Software In Graduate Programs In Education And Post-Graduate Research, Michael Harwell Jan 2018

The Role Of Data Analysis Software In Graduate Programs In Education And Post-Graduate Research, Michael Harwell

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The importance of data analysis software in graduate programs in education and post-graduate educational research is self-evident. However the role of this software in facilitating supererogated statistical practice versus "cookbookery" is unclear. The need to rigorously document the role of data analysis software in students' graduate coursework and research, and in post-graduate educational research studies, is emphasized along with recommendations for obtaining this information.

The Relationship Of Implicit Theories To Elementary Teachers’ Patterns Of Engagement In A Mathematics-Focused Professional Development Setting, Angela T. Barlow, Alyson E. Lischka, James C. Willingham, Kristin Hartland, D. Christopher Stephens Jan 2018

The Relationship Of Implicit Theories To Elementary Teachers’ Patterns Of Engagement In A Mathematics-Focused Professional Development Setting, Angela T. Barlow, Alyson E. Lischka, James C. Willingham, Kristin Hartland, D. Christopher Stephens

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

As elementary teachers aim to deepen their mathematical understandings, they engage in a relearning process that involves not only revisiting but also reconstructing their knowledge. To do so, meaningful engagement in immersion and practice-based experiences is required. This exploratory case study investigated the engagement patterns of two elementary teachers with varying implicit beliefs as they participated in a professional development that focused on relearning mathematics. Data were collected on the two participants in the form of video narratives, observation protocols, and interviews. Attention was given to their patterns of engagement in collaborative group settings as the participants moved through different …

Building Institutional Research Knowledge And Skills Through Communities Of Practice Networks, Rebecca S. Sheppard, Monica Reid Kerrigan Jan 2018

Building Institutional Research Knowledge And Skills Through Communities Of Practice Networks, Rebecca S. Sheppard, Monica Reid Kerrigan

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The demands on and expectations of Institutional Research (IR) departments at colleges and universities have continued to expand over the years, yet there have been no studies on cost effective ways to develop and maintain the knowledge and skills needed by professionals in the field. Using a survey and social network analysis, this study explored the impact of participating in an Institutional Research (IR) affinity group on the development of the three tiers of organizational intelligence and the strength and nature of the social network that exists among the participants. The findings suggest that communities of practice, such as the …

Expanding The Scope Of Teacher Education In An Attempt To Prevent Burnout Contagion, Aaron Samuel Zimmerman Jan 2018

Expanding The Scope Of Teacher Education In An Attempt To Prevent Burnout Contagion, Aaron Samuel Zimmerman

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Burnout is a significant problem that continues to plague the teaching profession. In this essay, I argue that the burnout of early-career teachers is not solely a function of personal factors (e.g., their knowledge, their beliefs, their pedagogical skills, their commitment to the teaching profession) but also a function of the organizational climates into which these early-career teachers enter. Specifically, burnout can be contagious, and, therefore, I argue that teacher educators must expand the scope of their efforts to include not only educating individual pre-service teachers but also revitalizing the organizational climates present within local schools.

Volunteer Retention Within Bowling Green State University Athletics, Hisham Abad Jan 2018

Volunteer Retention Within Bowling Green State University Athletics, Hisham Abad

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Partnerships are often made between sport management programs and university athletic departments to provide the athletic departments with student volunteers (Pierce et al., 2014). These sport management student volunteers provide athletic departments with a cheap labor force to properly staff and operate both events and normal business operations, while providing volunteers with altruistic benefits from volunteering (Wicker & Hallmann, 2013). Understanding the factors that motivate sport management students to volunteer is important because it can assist athletic departments in satisfying and ultimately retaining their volunteers (Johnson et al., 2017). Smaller intercollegiate athletic departments, such as Bowling Green State University (BGSU), …

Examining Efl Student Learning And Perceptions In Social Annotation-Based Translation Activities, Na Zhao, Fei Gao, Dazhi Yang

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Limited research has been conducted on how to incorporate computer-supported collaborative learning into translation instruction despite the potential benefits. A study was conducted with a group of college English majors in China to examine the effects of using a social annotation tool to encourage student interaction during translation activities. The results showed that students made greater improvement when they completed the translation assignments with the support of a social annotation tool than when they completed the assignments in the traditional way. In addition, students had a positive attitude toward the use of the social annotation tool.

Preservice Teachers’ Beliefs About Struggling Readers And Themselves, Katherine Brodeur, Lisa Ortmann Jan 2018

Preservice Teachers’ Beliefs About Struggling Readers And Themselves, Katherine Brodeur, Lisa Ortmann

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This descriptive case study examines preservice teachers’ beliefs about themselves as teachers of reading as they develop identities for teaching through experiences in a Foundations of Literacy course and their tutoring relationships with elementary students during an accompanying practicum. As the preservice teachers learned about foundational literacy development and assessment, they came to understand some students as “struggling readers,” although their beliefs were not always grounded in assessment results. Practicum experiences both challenged and reinforced their existing beliefs about struggling readers, as well as their own sense of self-efficacy in responding to struggling readers’ needs. Findings suggest that the types …

A Theory To Practice Approach To Reducing The Effects Of Hegemonic Masculinity On Gay And Bisexual Inclusion In Men’S Ice Hockey, Josie D. Kinneer Jan 2018

A Theory To Practice Approach To Reducing The Effects Of Hegemonic Masculinity On Gay And Bisexual Inclusion In Men’S Ice Hockey, Josie D. Kinneer

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Mainstream press narratives identify homonegative behaviors occurring in men’s ice hockey that may negatively impact gay and bisexual inclusion in the sport climate. The conceptual framework guiding this project draws from Messner’s (2002) model of peer group relationships and principles of inclusive excellence (“AACU”, 2018; Kauer & Krane, 2010). Messner’s (2002) model describes the social dynamics of the male athlete group, explaining how relationships are influenced by the desire for approval and acceptance as well as the fear of isolation. Inclusive excellence (AACU, 2018) is a guiding philosophy designed to increase diversity, inclusion, and equity. Kauer and Krane (2010) apply …

Self-Esteem In Spanish-Speaking Latinos In Northwest Ohio, Mckenna Freeman Dec 2017

Self-Esteem In Spanish-Speaking Latinos In Northwest Ohio, Mckenna Freeman

Honors Projects

Self-esteem is a widely-studied construct across many disciplines of social science. However, previous research regarding self-esteem and language barriers has focused primarily on children and adolescent populations, while much less research has examined this relationship among adults. The current study measures linguistic acculturation and self-esteem in both Latino and control adult samples. Hypothesis 1 states that participants in the Latino sample would report significantly lower self-esteem than the control sample. Hypothesis 2 states that linguistic acculturation levels in Spanish speaking Latinos would be positively correlated with self-esteem. Finally, a research question was addressed measuring the differences in self-esteem between foreign …
