Health- Or Environment-Focused Text Messages As A Potential Strategy To Increase Plant-Based Eating Among Young Adults: An Exploratory Study, Tze Joo Lim, Richard Nii Okine, Jonathan Kershaw

Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications

Previous plant-based diet (PBD) adoption strategies have primarily focused on health rather than environmental rationale and meat reduction rather than plant-based protein promotion. In this study, we explored the effect of a theory-informed text-message intervention on dietary intentions and behaviors in young adult omnivores and the potential explanatory role of PBD beliefs, subjective norm, self-efficacy, moral norm, and health and environmental values. Participants completed baseline questionnaires and reported dietary intake before being randomly assigned to receive 2√¢‚Ǩ‚Äú3 health- or environment-focused text messages per week for eight weeks and then repeated baseline assessments. Although we did not see significant changes in …

Is The Earth Crying Wolf? Exploring Knowledge Source And Certainty In High School Students' Analysis Of Global Warming News, Florian C. Feucht, Kate Michaelson, Susan L. Hany, Lauren N. Maziarz, Nathan E. Ziegler

Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications

The marked contrast between the scientific consensus on global warming and public beliefs indicates a need to research how high schoolers, as future citizens, engage with and make meaning from news articles on such topics. In the case of socioscientific issues (SSIs) such as global warming, students√¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ acquisition of knowledge from the news is mediated by their epistemic understandings of the nature of science (NOS) and use of informal reasoning in evaluating claims, evidence, and sources. This exploratory qualitative study examined twelve U.S. high school students√¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ understandings, opinions, and epistemic beliefs concerning global warming knowledge. Researchers examined microgenetic changes as …

Fairness, Voice, Dialogue: Measuring Collective Social Justice In Schools, Craig Howley, Aimee Howley, Marged Dudek, Courtney Gilday Jan 2021

Fairness, Voice, Dialogue: Measuring Collective Social Justice In Schools, Craig Howley, Aimee Howley, Marged Dudek, Courtney Gilday

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The United States is an inequitable society growing more inequitable in recent decades, and schooling is both part mechanism of oppression and part pathway toward social justice. Improving the extent to which schooling actually contributes to equity, however, depends on efforts to cultivate educator practices that advance social justice. Defining these practices and measuring their use among school faculties are necessary parts of the improvement process. Unfortunately, adequate measures of collective social justice practice in schools have not been developed for use with teachers. Based on a conception of social just as a three-part structure, we report progress on developing …

Voice For Change: Model Of Investment Theory In Professional Development For School Administrators, Iwona Lech, James Cohen

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper is a result of an intensive four-day summer academy designed for administrators and auxiliary staff to be introduced to the world of the English Learner (EL). Although over 95 participants participated in this study, we selected one participant as the focal person for this paper. It presents how one school principal changed and developed as a result of participating in the Summer Academy. In particular, using Investment Theory (Darvin & Norton, 2015) as the theoretical lens we discuss three areas where the Summer Academy played a role in how William viewed and approached working with others: 1) the …

The Future And Development Of E-Sports, Zuoyi Chen Jan 2021

The Future And Development Of E-Sports, Zuoyi Chen

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

E-sports have been growing exponentially since the launch of StartCraft in 1998. Their growth was first observed in South Korea, where the national government incorporated it into the cultural mainstream. South Korea established several e-sports competitions, which encouraged the youth’s widespread acceptance of e-sports. The culture quickly spread to other nations, such as neighboring China. With the proliferation of smartphones, consumption of esports increased in countries such as India and Africa – this technology led to the introduction of e-sports in new regions. The Chinese government was also researching 5G to increase the consumption of e-sports in the country, where …

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Background: There is little research done in the environment that the athletic trainer works professionally. It is expected that the findings of this study will contribute toward the dialogue around the importance of inclusion and acceptance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender athlete in a traditional hostile space. Purpose: The purpose is to explore the climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender athletes in the collegiate setting's athletic training facility. Methods: 96 certified athletic trainers were surveyed via email using the Campus Climate survey modified for the sports setting. The survey had 62 items across three sections: demographics, the …

Student-Athletes’ First-Year College Transitions At A Mid-American Conference University: Investigating Stressors In Different Identities And Covid-19, Kristen Kenfield

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), roughly 180,000 studentathletes are making the transition from high school to college in order to have the opportunity to compete in collegiate athletics ("NCAA recruiting fact," 2020). First-year student-athletes face the same transitions that non-student-athletes go through regarding social and academic identity, however, student-athletes have the additional stressor of having an athletic identity (Freeman, 2015; McFarlane, 2014; New, 2015; Skinner, 2004; Smith & Hardin, 2020). An additional transition came in the spring of 2020 with COVID-19 (Bullard, 2020; Roetert et. al., 2020). The purpose of this study was to investigate how the …

Determinants Of Profit For Division I Men’S Ice Hockey, Ryan Watson Jan 2021

Determinants Of Profit For Division I Men’S Ice Hockey, Ryan Watson

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

College athletics and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have been around since the late 1800s and early 1900s, and have been a large part of the culture at universities across the United States (Osborne, Jensen, Weight, 2020). The oldest college athletic event dates back to 1852 when Harvard and Yale competed against each other in a regatta (Osborne, Jensen, Weight, 2020). Since then, the popularity of schools competing against each other has continued to grow and has formed some great rivalries between colleges and universities. Students were one of the main reasons why intercollegiate athletic programs continued to grow …

The phylum is composed of a single class (), 4 orders (), 5 families (), and 13 genera. They have been isolated from extremely hot environments whose characteristics are reflected in the metabolic and phenotypic properties of the species. The metabolic versatility of members leads to a pool of high value-added products with application potentials in many industry fields. The low risk of contamination associated with their extreme culture conditions has made most species of the phylum attractive candidates in biotechnological processes. Almost all members of the phylum, especially those in the order , can produce bio-hydrogen from a variety …

Creating A Culture Of Readers Through Collection Development And Outreach, Joseph Prince, Colleen Boff

University Libraries Faculty Publications

Children’s literature collections in academic libraries present a unique opportunity for librarians to develop engaging out- reach programs for students, faculty, and community mem- bers. The Curriculum Resource Center at Bowling Green State University’s Wm. T. Jerome Library has developed several popular events that both promote the collection and the cen- tral mission of creating a culture of reading. In this case study, three of the most successful endeavors – Mock Caldecott, April Madness, and Sneak Peek - are highlighted to provide insight into how we integrate our carefully developed collec- tion into programs that inspire excitement and build commu- …

The Relationship Between Criminal Records And Job Performance: An Examination Of Customer Service Representatives, Jakari N. Griffith, Todd C. Harris Dec 2020

The Relationship Between Criminal Records And Job Performance: An Examination Of Customer Service Representatives, Jakari N. Griffith, Todd C. Harris

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Between 70 million and 100 million Americans—or as many as one in three—have some type of criminal record (Vallas & Dietrich, 2014). Having even a minor criminal record often functions as a significant impediment to gainful employment and resultant economic security. This is especially problematic given that: (a) many companies now incorporate background checks within their hiring process and (b) little empirical research exists about the relationship between criminal records and job performance. Thus, this study examined the relationship between criminal records and objective performance of customer service representatives (N = 627) in a large telecommunications firm. Our regression analyses …

Thermally Stable Fluorogenic Zn(Ii) Sensor Based On A Bis(Benzimidazole)Pyridine-Linked Phenyl-Silsesquioxane Polymer, Chamika U. Lenora, Nai-Hsuan Hu, Joseph C. Furgal

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A 2,6-bis(2-benzimidazolyl) pyridine-linked silsesquioxane-based semi-branched polymer was synthesized, and its photophysical and metal-sensing properties have been investigated. The polymer is thermally stable up to 285 °C and emits blue in both solid and solution state. The emission of the polymer is sensitive to pH and is gradually decreased and quenched upon protonation of the linkers. The initial emission color is recoverable upon deprotonation with triethylamine. The polymer also shows unique spectroscopic properties in both absorption and emission upon long-term UV irradiation, with red-shifted absorption and emission not present in a simple blended system of phenylsilsesquioxane and linker, suggesting that a …

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

This portfolio demonstrates exploration of technical communication through the research lenses of the automotive industry and the beauty industry, as well as through direct experience with both technical editing and technical writing. It exemplifies how technical communication contributes to the everyday lives of people worldwide, and how it can constantly be improved moving forward in everyday situations. With two research essays and two practical projects, this portfolio demonstrates the current climate of technical communication: a balance between academics and practitioners. In a time when technical communication is still new, there is much exploration to be done, and this collection of …
