The Symbolic Meaning Of International Tourism, Arthur G. Neal
The Symbolic Meaning Of International Tourism, Arthur G. Neal
Visions in Leisure and Business
The objective of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework for viewing the social psychology of international tourism. The concern will be with reviewing selective works of sociologists and extending some of the themes growing out of this research. Special emphasis will be placed on the book by Dean MacCannell (8) entitled Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class and Eric Cohen's (2) typology of international tourist. The symbolic meaning of tourism is placed within the context of psychological modernity.
Spiritual Pilgrimages: Traditional And Hyperreal Motivations For Travel And Tourism, Carl Bryan Holmberg
Spiritual Pilgrimages: Traditional And Hyperreal Motivations For Travel And Tourism, Carl Bryan Holmberg
Visions in Leisure and Business
Spiritual motivations for travel and tourism are not merely modern phenomena. They have been acculturated in numerous societies since the prehistoric era. They continue to influence the expectations and habits of travelers to this day. Administrators and entrepreneurs of travel and tourism organizations who understand these motivations and who enthusiastically apply them will position themselves better in the growing global and local tourism markets than those who ignore the longstanding human and spiritual traditions for travel.

A Lion's Share Of Tourism In The 21st Century, Ray B. Browne
Visions in Leisure and Business
Leisure-time activities and tourism are placing overwhelming demands on society and the environment. In order to meet these demands--or prevent the danger they will bring--we might think of three possible solutions: 1) representative tourism; 2) development of local, ethnic sites; 3) use of educational programs, video and movie presentations given to tourists before they enter a country; and formal courses in Popular Culture Studies as Humanities, which will develop thematically the similarities and differences of and between all people, respect for those differences, and a greater respect for humankind and nature.

Segmenting The Visitor Market By The Timing Of Their Activity Decisions, John C. Crotts, Laurel J. Reid
Visions in Leisure and Business
The purpose of this study was to describe visitors to a Florida county and determine if a CVB's promotional campaign strategies conformed with visitors' need for information. The research focused on the timing of visitors' activity decisions to assess whether promotional efforts were being channeled in ways that conformed to the timing of visitors' information needs and decision making. Responses from 546 completed surveys revealed that 71.5% of the respondents decided which recreational activities they would engage in prior to leaving home; 3.7% made that decision en route to the county; and 24. 9% after arriving in the county. Resort And Film Commissions: Developing A Location Filming Program, Emilyn Sheffield
Visions in Leisure and Business
California, New York and Florida are the most active states in feature film production, the most expensive and glamorous component of the industry. In addition to expenditures, tax revenues and jobs, movies provide a unique way to market a resort. The purpose of this research was to identify information needs of film industry decision makers and to analyze the organizational structure and marketing strategies used by film commissions and resorts. This research, which utilized and embedded, multiple-case study design, describes the marketing strategies, including materials, amenities and incentives, used to attract film production and makes explicit numerous issues critical to …

In Conclusion: Praise For American Public Education, David C. Berliner

Data which suggest the failure of America's schools to educate its youth do not survive careful scrutiny. School reforms based on these questionable data are wrongheaded and potentially destructive to quality education. Reforms of the kind proposed by those who have started from an assumption that America's schools have failed will exacerbate the differences between the "have" and the "have-not" school districts.
