Pesach N. Rubenstein Cheats The Hangman: A Case Study Of Punishment And The Death Penalty At Brooklyn’S Raymond Street Jail, Philip M. Stinson
Pesach N. Rubenstein Cheats The Hangman: A Case Study Of Punishment And The Death Penalty At Brooklyn’S Raymond Street Jail, Philip M. Stinson
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This paper tells the story of Pesach Rubenstein and how he cheated the hangman in 1876. Rubenstein was charged, tried, and convicted in Kings County, New York, for the 1875 murder of his 19 year-old cousin, Sarah Alexander. The Rubenstein case is noteworthy in that it received unprecedented media attention in the 1870s, involved the use of rudimentary forensic evidence at the trial, and divided the community on issues of religion, ethnicity, immigration (the victim and defendant were recent Jewish immigrants from Poland), and imposition of the death penalty. Using a case study approach to analyze the trial transcript, newspaper …

Urban University Access And Affordability: The Implications Of The Relationship Between Gas Prices And Suburban Transit Ridership, Jessie Baginski
Urban University Access And Affordability: The Implications Of The Relationship Between Gas Prices And Suburban Transit Ridership, Jessie Baginski
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Many college campuses across the country have implemented U-Pass transit programs to mitigate transportation costs for students. However, urban university U-pass programs fall short for suburban students who cannot get to the urban metro area without connecting public transportation. As urban universities rely on suburbs as feeder communities, this study looked at the relationship between suburban commuter ridership and the price of gas as an indicator of college affordability and accessibility. The findings revealed that ridership on suburban transit into an urban university area was significantly sensitive to the price of gas, thereby substantiating the need for partnerships to be …

Oxygen And Hydrogen Diffusion In Minerals, John Richard Farver
Oxygen And Hydrogen Diffusion In Minerals, John Richard Farver
School of Earth, Environment and Society Faculty Publications
This chapter provides a summary and review of experimentally determined oxygen and hydrogen volume diffusion in minerals. A very extensive and detailed review of stable isotope exchange processes including oxygen and hydrogen volume diffusion can be found in Cole and Chakraborty (2001) and a detailed review of hydrogen diffusion in minerals, especially nominally anhydrous minerals, can be found in Ingrin and Blanchard (2006). In addition, a detailed review of oxygen and hydrogen diffusion in silicate melts is provided by Zhang and Ni (2010), and oxygen and hydrogen diffusion rates can also be found in the chapters, in this volume, on …

Exit Strategy: An Exploration Of Late-Stage Police Crime, Philip M. Stinson, John Liederbach, Tina L. Freiburger
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
There are no exhaustive statistics available on the crimes committed by law enforcement officers, and only a small number of studies provide specific data on police crimes. The purpose of the current study is to examine the character of police arrests known to the media. Cases were identified through a content analysis of news coverage using the internet-based GoogleTM News search engine and its Google News Alerts search tool. The study focuses on the crimes committed by experienced officers who are approaching retirement. The occurrence of these late-stage crimes presents a challenge to existing assumptions regarding the relationship between …
Overcoming The Digital Divide: The Story Of An Urban Middle School, Savilla Banister, John Fischer
Overcoming The Digital Divide: The Story Of An Urban Middle School, Savilla Banister, John Fischer
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Access to appropriate technological resources in schools has become an issue, commonly labeled the “digital divide.” While the debate ensues in regards to an explicit definition for this phenomenon, research overwhelmingly demonstrates that students of marginalized populations remain on the lower end of access to and innovative use of current digital technologies. Accordingly, advocates of social justice point to the disparities of resources and quality learning opportunities experienced by students in poverty, including their exposure to dynamic technology integration in teaching and learning. This study narrates a five-year struggle to impact the digital divide on an urban middle school campus.
Cheating Perceptions And Prevalence Across Academic Settings, Kelly Honz, Kenneth A. Kiewra, Ya-Shu Yang
Cheating Perceptions And Prevalence Across Academic Settings, Kelly Honz, Kenneth A. Kiewra, Ya-Shu Yang
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This study investigated high school students’ perceptions of cheating and its prevalence. Students were administered the Academic Honesty Survey to determine their perceptions and prevalence of cheating across three academic settings: tests, homework, and report writing. Overall, students had traditional perceptions of what constitutes cheating. Despite these perceptions, most students cheated. In addition, cheating perceptions and prevalence varied across academic settings. Perceptions and prevalence declined going from test to homework to report writing settings. Three other interesting patterns emerged. First, cheating was tied to effort. Cheating actions that still required students to exert effort were viewed as less dishonest than …

Teaching Political Analysis: A Framework, Carla Edlefson
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
A framework using concepts from systems theory, theories of power, and the garbage can model of decision-making was developed for the purpose of teaching aspiring school administrators to analyze situations using a political lens. The framework is demonstrated in an analysis of the process that led to Ohio’s establishing a school facilities funding program. The framework is then used to illustrate an example of a graduate class assignment requiring analysis of a situation a new principal might face.

The temperature effects on the spectral properties and photophysics of a new d(8)-d(8) dinuclear Pt-II chromophore, [Pt(ppy)(mu-Ph(2)pz)](2) (ppy is 2-phenylpyridine and Ph(2)pz is 3,5-diphenylpyrazolate), have been investigated. The thermochromic shifts are tentatively ascribed to intramolecular sigma interactions between the two pseudocofacial d(Z2) orbitals. Substantial emission profile changes occur in the solid state, solution, and doped polymer films.
