Construction And Transformation Of A Thermotoga-E. Coli Shuttle Vector, Zhaohui Xu, Dongmei Han, Stephen M. Norris Jan 2012

Construction And Transformation Of A Thermotoga-E. Coli Shuttle Vector, Zhaohui Xu, Dongmei Han, Stephen M. Norris

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Thermotoga spp. are attractive candidates for producing biohydrogen, green chemicals, and thermostable enzymes. They may also serve as model systems for understanding life sustainability under hyperthermophilic conditions. A lack of genetic tools has hampered the investigation and application of these organisms. This study aims to develop a genetic transfer system for Thermotoga spp. Results: Methods for preparing and handling Thermotoga solid cultures under aerobic conditions were optimized. A plating efficiency of similar to 50% was achieved when the bacterial cells were embedded in 0.3% Gelrite. A Thermotoga-E. coli shuttle vector pDH10 was constructed using pRQ7, a cryptic mini-plasmid found …

Potential Tension Between A "Free Marketplace Of Ideas" And The Fundamental Purpose Of Free Speech, M. Neil Browne, Justin Rex, David L. Herrera Jan 2012

Potential Tension Between A "Free Marketplace Of Ideas" And The Fundamental Purpose Of Free Speech, M. Neil Browne, Justin Rex, David L. Herrera

Economics Faculty Publications

The authors argue that the marketplace of ideas is not competitive in the economic sense. Yet the Court often rules as if it is. What are the implications?

By assuming often that the idea market is competitive, Justices are committing the reification fallacy. They are treating an abstract belief or hypothetical construct as if it represented a concrete event or physical entity. In this instance, the Justices assume that existing markets are structured the same way idealized competitive markets are. In doing so, they treat the marketplace of ideas as inherently good, when in fact one must first determine what …

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production At Titania-Supported Pt Nanoclusters That Are Derived From Surface-Anchored Molecular Precursors, Rony S. Khnayzer, Lucas B. Thompson, Mikhail Zamkov, Shane Ardo, Gerald J. Meyer, Catherine J. Murphy, Felix N. Castellano Jan 2012

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production At Titania-Supported Pt Nanoclusters That Are Derived From Surface-Anchored Molecular Precursors, Rony S. Khnayzer, Lucas B. Thompson, Mikhail Zamkov, Shane Ardo, Gerald J. Meyer, Catherine J. Murphy, Felix N. Castellano

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Degussa P-25 TiO2 bearing surface-anchored Pt(dcbpy)Cl-2 [dcbpy = 4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine] prepared with systematically varied surface coverage produced Pt-0 nanoparticles under bandgap illumination in the presence of methanol hole scavengers. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the presence of elemental platinum in the newly formed nanoparticles during scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) eleriments. According to the statistical analysis of numerous STEM images, the Pt-0 nanoclusters were distributed in a segregated manner throughout the titania surface, ranging in size from 1 to 3 nm in diameter. The final achieved nanoparticle size and net hydrogen production were determined as a function of the Pt(dcbpy)Cl-2 surface …

Two Cheers For Burma’S Rigged Election, Neil A. Englehart Jan 2012

Two Cheers For Burma’S Rigged Election, Neil A. Englehart

Political Science Faculty Publications

Burma’s recent election was clearly not free and fair. However, it can also be seen as improving a uniquely unrepresentative government, creating greater pluralism, and institutionalizing differences within the ruling junta. Even the rigged election may have created opportunities for further opening in the future.

Race-Ethnic Differences In Sexual Health Knowledge, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford Jan 2012

Race-Ethnic Differences In Sexual Health Knowledge, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford

Sociology Faculty Publications

Despite extensive research examining the correlates of unintended fertility, it remains a puzzle as to why racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to experience an unintended birth than non-Hispanic whites. This paper focuses on sexual literacy, a potential precursor of unintended fertility. Analyses use a unique dataset of unmarried young adults aged 18-29, the 2009 Survey of Unmarried Young Adults’ Contraceptive Knowledge and Practices, to examine beliefs regarding pregnancy risks, pregnancy fatalism, and contraceptive side effects. At the bivariate level, foreign-born Hispanics hold more erroneous beliefs about the risk of pregnancy than other groups, and non-Hispanic blacks are more …

Political Efficacy And The Use Of Local And National News Media Among Undecided Voters In A Swing State: A Study Of General Population Voters And First-Time College Student Voters, Louisa Ha, Fang Wang, Ling Fang, Chen Yang, Xiao Hu, Liu Yang, Fang Yang, Ying Xu Jan 2012

Political Efficacy And The Use Of Local And National News Media Among Undecided Voters In A Swing State: A Study Of General Population Voters And First-Time College Student Voters, Louisa Ha, Fang Wang, Ling Fang, Chen Yang, Xiao Hu, Liu Yang, Fang Yang, Ying Xu

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

News media play a crucial role in democracy by serving as the watchdog of government and a distributor of political information and campaign messages to the general public. In the U.S., commercial media dominate the market, and they receive monetary support during the electoral campaign season via political advertising. In the 2012 presidential campaign, U.S. television media received 75% of the $1.1 billion dedicated to campaign advertising (Wilner, 2012). So much money is spent because the votes of undecided citizens in swing states are crucial to winning presidential elections. Most recently, the Democratic Party successfully targeted and won key swing …

Off-Duty & Under Arrest: A Study Of Crimes Perpetuated By Off-Duty Police, Philip M. Stinson, John Liederbach, Tina L. Freiburger Jan 2012

Off-Duty & Under Arrest: A Study Of Crimes Perpetuated By Off-Duty Police, Philip M. Stinson, John Liederbach, Tina L. Freiburger

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The findings of independent commissions and research derived from a data-set of career-ending misconduct among New York Police Department (NYPD) officers suggests that police engage in a wide variety of crimes while they are off-duty including domestic violence, bar fights, drunk driving, burglary, and sex offenses (The Mollen Commission, 1994; Fyfe & Kane, 2006; Kane & White, 2009). The off-duty misbehavior of police is an important concern for police agencies exposed to potential liability costs, and scholars engaged in debates about whether studies on police deviance should include acts committed while an officer is technically off-duty. The problem for scholars …

Properties Of Lewis Lung Carcinoma Cells Surviving Curcumin Toxicity, Michael Eric Geusz, Dejun Yan Jan 2012

Properties Of Lewis Lung Carcinoma Cells Surviving Curcumin Toxicity, Michael Eric Geusz, Dejun Yan

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The anti-inflammatory agent curcumin can selectively eliminate malignant rather than normal cells. The present study examined the effects of curcumin on the Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cell line and characterized a subpopulation surviving curcumin treatments. Cell density was measured after curcumin was applied at concentrations between 10 and 60 μM for 30 hours. Because of the high cell loss at 60 μM, this dose was chosen to select for surviving cells that were then used to establish a new cell line. The resulting line had approximately 20% slower growth than the original LLC cell line and based on ELISA contained …

Plasticity Of Total And Intracellular Phosphorus Quotas In Microcystis Aeruginosa Cultures And Lake Erie Algal Assemblages, Robert Michael Mckay, Matthew A. Saxton, Robert J. Arnold, Richard A. Bourbonniere, Steven W. Wilhelm Jan 2012

Plasticity Of Total And Intracellular Phosphorus Quotas In Microcystis Aeruginosa Cultures And Lake Erie Algal Assemblages, Robert Michael Mckay, Matthew A. Saxton, Robert J. Arnold, Richard A. Bourbonniere, Steven W. Wilhelm

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Blooms of the potentially toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis are common events globally, and as a result significant resources continue to be dedicated to monitoring and controlling these events. Recent studies have shown that a significant proportion of total cell-associated phosphorus (P) in marine phytoplankton can be surface adsorbed; as a result studies completed to date do not accurately report the P demands of these organisms. In this study we measure the total cell-associated and intracellular P as well as growth rates of two toxic strains of Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz grown under a range of P concentrations. The results show that the …

Police Crime & Less-Than-Lethal Coercive Force: A Description Of The Criminal Misuse Of Tasers, Philip M. Stinson, Bradford W. Reyns, John Liederbach

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study explores and describes the nature and character of cases that involve the criminal misuse of TASERs by police officers through a content analysis of newspaper articles. The news-based content analysis identified 24 police officers who were arrested for crimes that involved inappropriate use of TASERs over a 65 month period from January 2005 through May 2010. Data on these cases are presented in terms of: a) the arrested officer, b) victim characteristics, and c) the situational context of these events. The news-based content analyses were used to identify and describe some factors that were common among these events, …
