Creating A New Bizx2200 Curriculum For Students, Madison Y. Huff Apr 2013

Creating A New Bizx2200 Curriculum For Students, Madison Y. Huff

Honors Projects

The inspiration for this project arose from my personal experience as a College of Business student at Bowling Green State University. As part of a new program implemented within the college, each academic year students are required to participate in an applied business experience lab, known to students as BizX1100, BizX2200, BizX3300, or BizX4400. The program is the first of its kind in the nation, and allows teams of students to evaluate products and companies through hands-on research and propose innovations to improve an aspect of the product or company. Specifically, the BizX2200 course requires students to investigate a B2B …

Broadway Cares: Continuing To Raise Awareness, Cassandra Utt Apr 2013

Broadway Cares: Continuing To Raise Awareness, Cassandra Utt

Honors Projects

With over 300 student organizations on campus at Bowling Green State University, one would think that nearly everything has been covered. Last year, however, I was handed a project that had only been done sporadically in previous years on campus and in the community and could use some additional attention. The project was to hold a benefit performance to raise money in the support of the fight against HIV/AIDS. The initial plan was to just carry out the project as had previously been done, simply scheduling a benefit performance with a few friends. However, after thinking through the project and …

The Cost Of Ignorance: Shell-Shock In Britain During World War I, Bradley W. Corfman Apr 2013

The Cost Of Ignorance: Shell-Shock In Britain During World War I, Bradley W. Corfman

Honors Projects

Because shell-shock is a term specific to World War I but describes a condition which remains today, this paper sets the context for studying the British experience of shell-shock by carefully explaining what modern psychology says regarding PTSD and examining a few select texts by Wilfred Owen to demonstrate the psychological concepts in historic pieces. A historical comparison is made between the modern understanding of PTSD and the historic understanding of shell-shock as set forth in the Freudian paradigm between 1914 and 1920. The final pages examine the effects of this paradigm on the conclusions drawn by the War Office …

Crafting Personality Through Web Usability: Western Avenue Ministries Website Initiative, Kaitlyn Kutz

Honors Projects

In the digital age in which we live, the Internet has become a primary place where people from across the globe can connect around common interests. Consequently, the web has become a primary way for non-profit organizations to foster engagement around their cause. The purpose of my honors project was to discover how to stimulate such engagement, specifically through a non-profit organization’s website. Upon completing preliminary research, I found web usability to be a key to creating successful web experiences. Furthermore, I discovered that web usability in conjunction with a unified content and visual design strategy gives the website a …

History Of Negotiations And Politics Of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (Salt), Brian E. Kempfer Apr 2013

History Of Negotiations And Politics Of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (Salt), Brian E. Kempfer

Honors Projects

This paper examines the United States' negotiation strategy in the First Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. It uses a framework that combines Graham and Allison's bureaucratic politics model; negotiation theory articulated by Thompson; and a modified version of two level games as articulated by Knopf. This paper argues that these three frameworks reveal that the SALT negotiations required President Nixon to satisfy five different negotiating partners: the American bureaucracy, Congress, the American public, America's NATO Allies, and the Soviet Union. One must consider all of these five groups to avoid viewing American negotiating positions like the decision to offer to reduce …

Career Services Usage: An Analysis Of Efficacy And Contextual Barriers' Influence, China Billotte Apr 2013

Career Services Usage: An Analysis Of Efficacy And Contextual Barriers' Influence, China Billotte

Honors Projects

Higher education institutions nationwide have begun providing their students with career services centers to assist them with professional development workshops, career consultations, and useful resources. Despite this, many college graduates leave without ever having utilized them. Previous research regarding career services has identified that social stigmas and lack of awareness negatively impact students’ usage of career service centers (Fouad et al., 2006). However, there is no existing research that examines the effects of contextual barriers or efficacy (e.g. self-efficacy, career search efficacy) in conjunction with subjective norms and awareness of services on the usage of career services. This study examined …

Consumption And Dependency Of Social Network Sites As A News Medium: A Comparison Between College Students And General Population, Louisa Ha, Kisung Yoon, Xiaoqun Zhang

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

This exploratory study investigates social network sites (SNS) users’ time allocation behavior among various traditional and new media. Specifically, it examines the difference in degree of dependency on SNS between the young generation and the general population as a new form of news medium based on the media system dependency (MSD) and the microeconomic consumption (MEC) theories. The research results reveal that SNS, along with other online media, such as online audio/video news, are the preferred news sources for young people and they are more likely to be interested in soft news than hard news. SNS has become online users’ …

Global Patterns In Overweight Among Children And Mothers In Less Developed Countries, Jennifer Van Hook, Claire E. Altman, Kelly Stamper Balistreri Apr 2013

Global Patterns In Overweight Among Children And Mothers In Less Developed Countries, Jennifer Van Hook, Claire E. Altman, Kelly Stamper Balistreri

Sociology Faculty Publications

Objective: Past research has identified increases in national income and urbanization as key drivers of the global obesity epidemic. That work further identified educational attainment and urban residence as important moderators of the effects of national income. However, such work has tended to assume that children and adults respond in the same way to these factors. In the present paper, we evaluate how the socio-economic and country-level factors associated with obesity differ between children and their mothers. Design: We modelled the associations between maternal education, country-level income and urban residence with mother's and children's weight status. Setting We analysed ninety-five …

Case Study Of Using A Social Annotation Tool To Support Collaboratively Learning, Fei Gao

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

The purpose of the study was to understand student interaction and learning supported by a collaboratively social annotation tool — Diigo. The researcher examined through a case study how students participated and interacted when learning an online text with the social annotation tool — Diigo, and how they perceived their experience. The findings suggested that students participated actively in the collaborative learning activity and were engaged in a variety of behaviors including self-reflection, elaboration, internalization, and showing support. Although students generally had a moderately positive attitude toward using the social annotation tool for collaborative learning, a few problems were identified. …
