Measuring Teacher Dispositions: Identifying Workplace Personality Traits Most Relevant To Teaching Professionals, Yuankun Yao, Alexander Pagnani, Matt Thomas, Luisa Abellan-Pagnani, Terrell Brown, Dawna Lisa Buchanan
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
What personality traits represent dispositions most relevant to teaching professionals? Could an instrument reflecting work personality traits for a wide variety of professions provide a valid assessment of dispositions for teacher candidates? This study analyzed the internal structure of a state mandated dispositions assessment that was adapted from the Workplace Personality Inventory II. The analyses found that the hypothesized factor structure lacked support from the data. The second stage of the study explored and identified a measurement model consisting of select personality traits most relevant to teaching professionals. The results of the study have implications for educational agencies and teacher …

The Global Epidemiology Of Tourist Fatalities, Caley Reid
The Global Epidemiology Of Tourist Fatalities, Caley Reid
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
With the yearly increase of travelers around the world, tourist fatalities continue to rise. As seen before with infectious diseases, the proper evaluation of the diseases causing tourist mortality and the creation of effective preventive plans has helped to decrease tourist mortality from these ailments. The objective of this study is to identify the types of pre-death activities leading to trauma-based tourist fatalities, contributing factors in fatal incidents, and the demographic trends of the tourist fatalities. The findings reinforce industry trends from previous studies, implying that the creation of a tourist fatality database would have large levels of effectiveness in …

Frank “Buck” Weeber Gymnasium has been a pillar of the suburban Detroit city River Rouge, Michigan since the 1940’s when the emphasis of athletics became established within the community. The gym is the home of 14 state championship basketball teams (13 boys, 1 girls) and many great athletes. However, in 2000 the gym along with the conjoined high school were closed down due to asbestos and poor piping in favor of a new high school across the street (Price, 2016-1017). The new gym inside the high school lacks the same prestige and luster of the “The Buck.” The purpose of …
Academic Clustering: Mid-Major Issues Within Women’S Intercollegiate Athletics, Alexander Severns
Academic Clustering: Mid-Major Issues Within Women’S Intercollegiate Athletics, Alexander Severns
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Academic clustering has become an epidemic across all intercollegiate levels. Academic clustering is present when at least twenty-five percent of an athletic team, or department, is specialized in one academic area (Case, Greer, & Brown, 1987). This concept has been often examined among collegiate athletes; however, most research has been centralized on top-tier football programs and other revenue generation sports. This ignores the collective intercollegiate landscape as a whole. The purpose of this study is to further investigate the idea of academic clustering, but with a more under representative demographic. Women’s Basketball and Softball student athletes’ academic interests within the …

Making Meaning Of Student Activism: Student Activist And Administrator Perspectives, Laura M. Harrison, Peter C. Mather
Making Meaning Of Student Activism: Student Activist And Administrator Perspectives, Laura M. Harrison, Peter C. Mather
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
College campuses have experienced a recent resurgence of student activism, particularly in response to some of President Donald Trump’s executive orders as well as controversial speakers like Ann Coulter and Milo Yiannopoulous. Student activism presents both challenges and opportunities for higher education leaders seeking to engage productively in these often complex and highly charged issues. We conducted a phenomenological study of ten student activists and eight administrators at three universities to examine the meaning and goals they identify in their experience of campus activism. Findings indicated students identify their activist involvement as highly meaningful, especially with regard to what they …
Digitized And Decoupled? Teacher Sensemaking Around Educational Technology In A Model 1:1 Program, Stacy Gherardi
Digitized And Decoupled? Teacher Sensemaking Around Educational Technology In A Model 1:1 Program, Stacy Gherardi
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This mixed-methods study utilized surveys and interviews to analyze teacher sensemaking in a widely acclaimed 1:1 laptop program in a predominantly low-income, predominantly Latino school district. Quantitative and qualitative measures found that teachers across the district used technology in similar ways and that technology strongly increased differentiated instruction, changed how students accessed knowledge, and had a positive impact on assessment practices; a negative relationship between technology and parent engagement was found. Teacher perceptions of the 1:1 program varied widely and were dependent on both personal and organizational factors. Findings suggested a sensemaking process in which teacher beliefs were often decoupled …
Sniffing Out The Secret Poison: Selection Bias In Educational Research, Daniel A. Showalter, Luke B. Mullet
Sniffing Out The Secret Poison: Selection Bias In Educational Research, Daniel A. Showalter, Luke B. Mullet
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Selection bias is a persistent, and often hidden, problem in educational research. It is the primary obstacle standing in between increasingly available large education datasets and the ability to make valid causal inferences to inform policymaking, research, and practice (Stuart, 2010). This article provides an accessible discussion on the importance of understanding selection bias in educational research. Although a general explanation on how to remove selection bias is beyond the scope of this article, the reader is guided through an example of this removal process. Specifically, a propensity score analysis is used on a nationally representative dataset to examine whether …

Corporatizing Public Education—Problems, Pitfalls, And Questions To Consider, Horace R. Hall
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The idea of privatization of the traditional U.S. public school system is a relatively recent historical phenomenon. The growing trend towards allowing private enterprises to become active players in the development and delivery of classroom learning is assumed to be a "public good." The following commentary provides a cursory look at the impact market encroachment, largely in the form of charters, is having on traditional schools, as well as various social, political and educational issues to consider as market-driven initiatives become increasingly part of the public school domain.

How Do Softball Athletes Construct The Media?, Brittany Lastrapes-Thackery
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
The media serves as an extremely important source for many Americans to get information. Mediated sports are extremely popular in today’s society, and commercial sports even have more influence over the press than daily news. The relationship between sports and the media can be seen as a type of partnership (Stead, 2002). When it comes to sporting events, viewers become extremely invested in the games and the athletes that they are watching. Many athletes are forced to give interviews right before games or after heartbreaking loses whether they want to or not. Despite how often sporting events and athlete interviews …

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
The Olympic Games are a mega-event that is held every four years and draws millions of viewers around the world; at the Rio Olympic Games for instance, 7.5 million tickets were sold, and local fans had to enter a drawing to be qualified for tickets (Xinhua, 2015). Besides, the 2012 London Olympic Games attracted over 900,000 additional tickets over previous Games in popular sports (Flint, 2012). The interests in bidding and holding the Olympics are growing among the most populated and prominent cities (Dansero & Puttilli, 2010). This article mainly analyzes what the future of Chinese winter sports will be, …

Building Better Water In Lake Erie, Morgan Potts
Building Better Water In Lake Erie, Morgan Potts
Honors Projects
This paper addresses two of the common forms of pollution in Lake Erie: excess nutrients leading to blooms of toxin-producing cyanobacteria and pollution from heavy metals. The paper provides a brief history on the state of pollution in the lake, as well as historical methods to solve these problems. It addresses the causes of both harmful algal blooms (HABs) and heavy metal pollution in the lake, which are both related to the structure of modern agricultural, urban, and industrial environments. The major focus of this paper is on practices that are currently being used to address this pollution and how …
Free To Play/Pay To Win: Consuming Competition Through Online Gaming In The Neoliberal Age, Brandon Jones
Free To Play/Pay To Win: Consuming Competition Through Online Gaming In The Neoliberal Age, Brandon Jones
Honors Projects
This project examines online gaming in the context of decades of deregulation and privatization. In the piece, I examine American culture’s infatuation with the value of competition through a historical and hegemonic scope. Throughout the piece, I make connections between online gaming and the illusion that the populace must compete for unnecessarily scarce resources. The goal of this project is to illustrate how micro-transactions in online gaming is not beneficial for the consumer, but rather coercive reinforcements of the spontaneous philosophy of competition prevalent in the Neoliberal age.

A Three-Position Air Rifle Range Officer E-Learning Module, Katherine Harrington
Master of Education in Instructional Design and Technology Plan II Graduate Projects
This project focused on the rationale and development procedures for a computer-based training module for the purpose of instructing officials on the safe and fair conduct of three-position air rifle competitions. While hundreds of competitions are conducted around the country each year, no training existed for the officials in this specific shooting discipline. This project aimed to establish consistent training so that all competitions are conducted by at least one trained official. The learning module was developed using the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (ADDIE) model of instructional systems design. After the course was developed, data was collected to …

This project utilized instructional design techniques to develop an online training program to teach gun safety and introduce people to the sport of military rifle shooting, using the AR-15 rifle. The online training course supports the mission of the Civilian Marksmanship Program; to promote marksmanship training and safety to United States citizens. Concerns regarding the efficacy of teaching marksmanship in an online format were identified and addressed. The ADDIE model of instructional design was used to create the three learning modules; Introduction to Service Rifle, the Fundamentals of Marksmanship, and Service Rifle Positions. Participants in the training included U. S. …

The Unfortunate Role Of Farm Subsidies As A Stimulus For Inequality And Obesity, Neil M. Browne, Facundo Bouzat, Justin Rex, Joseph Seipel
Economics Faculty Publications
Governmental expenditures are directed at a particular objective, but their effects have consequences far beyond the named target of the expenditures. Specific farm subsidies, for example, encourage consumption of particular foods by reducing the costs of producing these foods. To what extent do these subsidies affect the American obesity epidemic? How do the subsidies create disparate negative effects on those in poverty? Exploring these questions stimulates us to take greater care when designing legislation to take a broader look at the stakeholders affected by any particular governmental expenditure.
