Faces Of Bg: Diverse Backgrounds, Many Stories, One Community, Holly Shively
Honors Projects
If you ask people who have been around Bowling Green State University for at least a decade, they’ll tell you the university seems more diverse, but some people find that, based on statistics, the university isn’t diverse enough. Despite BGSU having roughly 77 percent of students being between the ages of 18 and 21 years old and 78 percent being white, smaller communities flourish within the larger BGSU community. FacesofBG.com is a website that explores diversity at Bowling Green State University through the motto “Diverse backgrounds. Many stories. One community.” Through educational components like diversity in the local news and …
Life Course Outcomes For Juveniles: Contact With The Criminal Justice System As A Turning Point, Dominique Tauffner
Life Course Outcomes For Juveniles: Contact With The Criminal Justice System As A Turning Point, Dominique Tauffner
Honors Projects
This research investigated the life course outcomes of respondents who have been arrested during adolescence. Although the creation of the juvenile justice system is relatively recent, only existing for 119 years, there is a need for data on the impact this system has on society. The pre-existing knowledge and literature on juvenile delinquency and the criminal justice system often fails to capture longitudinal data. Most scholars on this issue will discuss the immediate effects of things like incarceration and placement or what influences delinquency, ignoring the long-term consequences or life outcomes of those that have been arrested prior to 18. …
Effects Of Copper Sulfate On Mortality Rates Of Daphnia Magna, Grace Vilem
Effects Of Copper Sulfate On Mortality Rates Of Daphnia Magna, Grace Vilem
Honors Projects
Many reservoirs used for drinking water end up growing algae that needs to be removed. Copper sulfate (CuSO4) can be used to reduce the growth of algae, however this chemical has been shown to have negative effects on invertebrates living in aquatic environment. This experiment exposed Daphnia magna, an aquatic zooplankton, to various concentrations of CuSO4 for 48 hours to determine an LC50 value. Six sets of data were collected and averaged, finding an LC50 value of 36 ug/L. Further testing is needed to determine effects of CuSO4 on fecundity between generations of Daphnia, as …

Obstacles Non-Native English Speakers Experience In Aviation, Joseph Sturgis
Honors Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine if there are challenges associated with the comprehension of aviation content in the English language for international students in flight training. The researcher conducted a study by interviewing four international students enrolled in flight training at the Bowling Green State University Aviation Studies program utilizing a qualitative and quantitative survey questionnaire. Results revealed that there is a correlation between an international student’s Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) score and the challenges encountered with effective communication. The discussion and subsequent findings revealed connections between ILR scores and perceived student challenges. Additional connections between the …

Technology And The Marginalization Of Older Adults: How Politeness Theory And Stereotype Embodiment Interact In Older Adults' Technology Use, Keefe Watson
Honors Projects
Marginalization of older adults is a long-time and pervasive fact of society. Technology use can make older adults feel less marginalized by connecting them socially, such as with communication technologies. However, older adults on average are less technology literate than younger adults; this can add to feelings of marginalization. In this study, I analyzed structured open-ended interviews and found unexpected instances of marginalization towards older adults related to technology; for example, older adults are most likely to withstand marginalized comments from their own adult children and family members. I applied politeness theory and the stereotype embodiment model to the coded …
Digitally Curating Undergraduate Editors’ Voices With The Fuse Box, Alexandra Butler
Digitally Curating Undergraduate Editors’ Voices With The Fuse Box, Alexandra Butler
Honors Projects
The Forum for Undergraduate Student Editors (FUSE) is a national organization focused on creating a community of undergraduate editors. Every year, FUSE hosts an annual conference at a member institution as well as a caucus at the American Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) Conference. Through the rest of the year, FUSE has used their website and Facebook to keep in touch with the members. However, FUSE was not using this digital platform to their advantage, nor were they building a deliberate brand with their online efforts. Because of this, membership gain was only through the AWP Caucus or through word-of-mouth; …
Religious Leadership And Political Affiliation On A Secular Midwestern Campus, Kristy Atanasov
Religious Leadership And Political Affiliation On A Secular Midwestern Campus, Kristy Atanasov
Honors Projects
This qualitative study explores the connection between religion and political affiliation in campus organizations from the perspective of the leaders of religious organizations on a secular Midwestern university. Interviews with ten leaders of Christian, Jewish, or Muslim organizations were utilized in gathering data. The current literature on campus religion is rarely qualitative, and fails to address specific campus religious organizations and their leaders. The results of the study found that religious affiliation is not a highly contributing factor in political affiliation, as previous quantitative studies have indicated. Ethnic, religious, and racial marginalization emerged as more significant indicators of political affiliation …

Music & Media: A Senior Recital & Honors Project, Kayla Luteran
Music & Media: A Senior Recital & Honors Project, Kayla Luteran
Honors Projects
Music & Media: A Senior Recital & Honors Project is a cross-media marketing strategy. The main purpose of this project was to develop visually appealing, informative graphic elements and branding to effectively promote a musical performance. This is interdisciplinary in nature and includes written and oral communication.
While many music students post about their senior recital on social media or place flyers, they do not develop a thorough methodology for generating buzz about their event. Although musical preparation is of utmost importance for a performance, I believe that time should be spent on all aspects of planning the recital. With …

Women In Film: A Personal Account, Carlie Merlo
Honors Projects
My Honors Project addresses the inequalities that exist within the film industry by sitting down with several senior members of the BGSU Film Department to discuss this issue. Research done by Dr. Martha Lauzen through the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film highlights the rampant sexism that currently exists in the entertainment industry. This subject is of particular concern for myself and for my female classmates who are preparing to make careers in the film field. After four years at BGSU, I have realized that the industry-wide sexism constantly discussed in the media does not exist …

Contemporary Paranormal Romance: Theories And Development Of The Genre’S Feminism (Or Lack Thereof), Kathleen Kollman
Contemporary Paranormal Romance: Theories And Development Of The Genre’S Feminism (Or Lack Thereof), Kathleen Kollman
Researching the Romance Conference (2018-2020)
Paranormal romance is a contentious subgenre that some critics have castigated as being anti-feminist. Linda J. Lee writes that this subgenre features “male protagonists [who often] come from a cultural background in which men are dominant over women” (61), and Sandra Booth argues that paranormal romances featuring a monstrous hero and angelic heroine hearken back to highly patriarchal forms of gender roles, including consensual sex that reads like violent rape (96-99). However, as the genre proliferated beyond its initial surge in popularity in the 1990s, it—like romance novels generally—matured beyond its beginnings and manifested more complex ideologies. As Lee Tobin-McClain …

Romancelandia On Twitter: Designing A Digital Humanities Research Assignment For First-Year Writing Students, Heather M. Schell, Ann K. G. Brown
Researching the Romance Conference (2018-2020)
On Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr, on blogs and Pinterest and Twitter, romance writers have embraced social media as a way to engage with their readers; they also use these platforms to foster community among romance authors, encouraging and promoting each other. This public presence provides a unique opportunity for scholars to witness the dynamics of the romance writing community in action. In Heather’s first-year writing class, Love and American Culture, in the primary goal is to introduce students to academic writing and research. Part of this entails helping students experience the excitement of writing a research paper when the topic …

Assay Of The Reverse Osmosis Purified Water In The Life Science Building At Bowling Green State University, Ohio, Nicholas Mendenhall, Scott O. Rogers, Neocles B. Leontis
Honors Projects
Contaminated water sources can cause problems for scientific research and result in costly delays and failures of experiments. At Bowling Green State University, the reverse osmosis supply circulating in the Life Sciences Building has been measurably contaminated for nearly three years, corresponding to a change in servicing of the system. While servicing has been accelerated, the contamination in the system remains. The focus of this research was to identify the species of bacteria and fungi growing inside of the water system so that it might alert those servicing the system, and to begin to eliminate the contamination. Reverse osmosis water …

Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Film Screening and Q/A with co-directors:
During the Iraq War, veterans from the United States crossed the border to Canada seeking refuge from serving in what they viewed as an unjust and immoral war. Peace Has No Borders follows three resisters and their supporters through a ten-year effort to remain in Canada.
Peace Has No Borders takes place within the backdrop of a previous migration to Canada. Between 1965-1973, over 50,000 Americans crossed the border seeking refuge from what is now widely recognized as a misguided war. Forty years later, Canada faces the same political dilemma – whether to give …

Counseling The Media: Bridging Pop Cultural Borders With The Mental Health Profession, Stephanie J. Durham, Michael A. Desposito
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Professional counseling is often defined as a professional relationship meant to empower diverse people towards their mental health and wellness goals (Kaplan, Tarvydas, & Gladding, 2014). While counselors continue to provide professional services in many settings, counseling is not always portrayed in a positive light within television and film. Shows such as 13 Reasons Why and How I Met Your Mother both portray an inaccurate perception of counseling characters who disregard their ethical duties despite the American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics (2014) mandates for safe-guarding the wellbeing of those seeking counseling, honoring multicultural diversity, and advocating for social justice. …
