"No One Wants To Be A Loser:" High School Students' Perceptions Of Academic Competition, Monica Kowalski, Andrea L. Christensen
"No One Wants To Be A Loser:" High School Students' Perceptions Of Academic Competition, Monica Kowalski, Andrea L. Christensen
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This study sought to explore the often controversial role of competition in academic settings by interviewing 11 high school students, about half of whom were in an AP English course. The interviews asked the students to describe how they feel competition plays a role in their classrooms and personal learning experiences, and also how competition has influenced their motivation and achievement-related outcomes. Results indicated that all students had engaged in competition academically and it was viewed both positively and negatively, despite the fact that students’ description of specific experiences with competition were largely negative. Four dominant patterns emerged that depended …
Differences In Perceived Issues In Teacher Preparation Between First-Year Teachers And Their Principals, Ximena Uribe-Zarain, Jia "Grace" Liang, James Sottile, George R. Watson
Differences In Perceived Issues In Teacher Preparation Between First-Year Teachers And Their Principals, Ximena Uribe-Zarain, Jia "Grace" Liang, James Sottile, George R. Watson
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The perspectives of both teachers and principals are valuable in understanding to what extent recent graduates from formal educator preparation programs are ready to take on teaching roles and tasks as a teacher. The understanding gained may contribute to bettering initiatives targeted on teacher retention, particularly in those critical beginning years of practice. This study examined the perceived effectiveness of first-year teachers’ preparation from the perspectives of the teachers and the principals, utilizing three-year survey data of 644 first-year teachers who graduated from a higher education institution and 497 hosting principals in a Midwest state. The findings note that the …
Revising "Field Experience" In The Pandemic Period And Beyond, Amy Bacevich
Revising "Field Experience" In The Pandemic Period And Beyond, Amy Bacevich
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Teacher educators worry about how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted what and how teacher candidates are able to learn in P-12 field experiences; yet it is possible to view this period as one of opportunity rather than limitation. This commentary argues for a conception of field experience as practice rather than context. When applied across programs, this conception could help situate “field experience” across the teacher education curriculum, regardless of the physical spaces in which novices are working and studying. The author advocates a focus on essential instructional routines, especially those that engage P-12 students with rigor and can be …
Exploring The Effectiveness Of Promotions Used By Bgsu Athletics, Christopher R. Novak
Exploring The Effectiveness Of Promotions Used By Bgsu Athletics, Christopher R. Novak
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Promotions are commonly used to bring people to athletic events from anywhere to youth levels all the way up to professional levels. Elements of the promotional mix include advertising, sales promotions, personal selling, and public relations. Understanding what elements of the promotional mix the greatest influence on increasing attendance at athletic events along with what motivates fans to attend is critical to developing a strong marketing plan. This is especially true for universities that have issues with attendance at athletic events. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate what forms of promotions BGSU Athletics currently execute and to …
Perceived Ice Quality In Nhl Arenas And The Effect On Player Offensive Performance, Joe Martin
Perceived Ice Quality In Nhl Arenas And The Effect On Player Offensive Performance, Joe Martin
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
The playing surface in hockey is unlike any other in sports and because it is so integral to the game, players and coaches believe that ice quality can impact their offensive performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ice quality of NHL arenas on player performance by comparing statistics from games played at the best and worst rated arenas and to their season average. One forward and one defenseman from each of the twenty-one teams who do not play their home games in either the top five or bottom five ranked arenas were selected for …
Potential Applications Of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Fmri) To Organizational Research: A Primer And Sample Study, Allen I. Huffcutt, Wen-Ching Liu, Lori A. Russell-Chapin
Potential Applications Of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Fmri) To Organizational Research: A Primer And Sample Study, Allen I. Huffcutt, Wen-Ching Liu, Lori A. Russell-Chapin
Personnel Assessment and Decisions
The first purpose of this manuscript is to provide a primer for organizational researchers on both fMRI and brain physiology because few are likely to have encountered an in-depth treatment of either previously. The second purpose is to present the results of an actual fMRI study on an organizational topic (structured employment interviews) as a sample to help illustrate the potential of this type of research. Results of the sample study enhanced understanding of the brain processes behind responding to situational (SI) and behavior description (BDI) interviews, and offered several promising directions for follow-up research. To illustrate the latter, there …
A Meta-Analysis Of Hiring Discrimination Against Muslims And Arabs, Timothy Bartkoski, Ellen Lynch, Chelsea Witt, Cort Rudolph
A Meta-Analysis Of Hiring Discrimination Against Muslims And Arabs, Timothy Bartkoski, Ellen Lynch, Chelsea Witt, Cort Rudolph
Personnel Assessment and Decisions
Muslim and Arab individuals are discriminated against in almost all domains. Recently, there has been a focus on examining the treatment of these groups in the work setting. Despite the great number of primary studies examining this issue, there has not yet been a quantitative review of the research literature. To fill this gap, this meta-analysis examined the presence and magnitude of hiring discrimination against Muslim and Arab individuals. Using 46 independent effect sizes from 26 sources, we found evidence of discrimination against Muslim and Arab people in employment judgments, behaviors, and decisions across multiple countries. Moderator analyses revealed that …

Drowning Prevention: Define And Then Gather Evidence Or Gather Evidence To Define?, Nina J. Nyitrai, Suzi Edwards, Nicholas O'Dwyer
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
According to the World Health Organization, drowning fatalities are a neglected public health issue ranked as the third most frequent cause of unintentional death by injury. Data used to record drowning incidents are acknowledged as inaccurate. Recommendations on drowning prevention based on these data are currently not informed by accurate, detailed and reliable evidence. Two modifications to current practice are proposed: 1) an Aquatic Incident Report needs to be developed as an extension of the current workplace incident report to prompt for information commonly not included in current drowning reports; and 2) National Water Safety Plans should be modified to …

Help! An Insight Into Long Distance Romantic Relationship Advice Sought Online, Brendan John Murphy
Help! An Insight Into Long Distance Romantic Relationship Advice Sought Online, Brendan John Murphy
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the long-distance romantic relationship (LDRR) advice sought online and see how it relates to previous literature. Reddit posts from the r/LongDistance subreddit were narrowed using an advanced search to find the most popular (upvoted) advice from users. Qualitative, contextual analysis research was used to search for reoccurring themes throughout the advice sought. Results revealed that feelings of uncertainty and anxiety were very common within LDRR, and advice was sought about how to maintain relationships whilst living apart.
