Background: Obesity is a growing epidemic among university students, and the high levels of stress reported by this population could contribute to this issue. Singular relationships between perceived stress; engagement in restrained, uncontrolled, and emotional eating; sleep; dietary risk; and body mass index (BMI) have been reported in the current body of literature; however, these constructs interact with each other, and the complex relationships among them are infrequently examined. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explore the complex relationships between these constructs using mediation and moderation analyses stratified by gender. Methods: A cross-sectional study, enrolling university students …

The Social Philosophy Of Gerald Gaus: Moral Relations Amid Control, Contestation, And Complexity, Kevin Vallier Jan 2022

The Social Philosophy Of Gerald Gaus: Moral Relations Amid Control, Contestation, And Complexity, Kevin Vallier

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Gerald Gaus was one of the leading liberal theorists of the early twenty-first century. He defended liberal order based on its unique capacity to handle deep disagreement and pressed liberals toward a principled openness to pluralism and diversity. Yet, almost everything written about Gaus's work is evaluative: determining whether his arguments succeed or fail. This essay breaks from the pack by outlining underlying themes in his work. I argue that Gaus explored how to sustain moral relations between persons in light of the institutional threats of social control, evaluative pluralism, and institutional complexity, and the psychological threat of acting solely …

Isolating Bacteriophage For Potential Treatment Of Chronic Multi-Drug Resistant Escherichia Coli Infections, Leila Oswalt Jan 2022

Isolating Bacteriophage For Potential Treatment Of Chronic Multi-Drug Resistant Escherichia Coli Infections, Leila Oswalt

Honors Projects

The misuse and overuse of antibiotics has led to the intense rise in antibiotic resistance. As society transitions into the post antibiotic era, there will be a great need for new therapeutic strategies to address multiple drug resistant bacterial infections. One such method, called bacteriophage therapy, allows for specific targeting of certain pathogenic bacteria through the use of viruses that attack bacteria; termed “bacteriophage” or simply “phage”. Urinary tract infections are among the most common pathological human infections that rely heavily on the use of antibiotics, the major cause of which is the bacterium Escherichia coli. During the Spring 2021-Spring …

Communicating Privilege And Faculty Allyship, Lisa Hanasono, Hyun Kyoung Ro, Deborah A. O'Neil, Ellen M. Broido, Margaret M. Yacobucci, Susana Peña, Karen V. Root

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

As individuals who use their privilege to reduce prejudice, educate others about social justice, and actively stop discrimination, faculty allies can play a vital role in transforming universities to be more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. However, discrepancies persist in how faculty define privilege and communicate allyship. Drawing from standpoint theory, we examined discursive divergences in how 105 full-time faculty defined and experienced privilege and how they enacted allyship in the workplace. Participants tended to conceptualize privilege as a set of advantages and lack of structural barriers for people based on their group membership(s). Discursive differences emerged regarding the degree to …

The Mental Health Impacts Of Covid-19 On Pk-12 Students: A Systematic Review Of Emerging Literature, David Naff, Shenita Williams, Jenna Furman-Darby, Melissa Yeung

School of Physical and Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

The mental health impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on PK-12 youth is likely an urgent and enduring concern, yet research on this topic is still emerging. To synthesize current knowledge, the researchers conducted a systematic review of empirical studies exploring the mental health impacts of COVID-19. Five themes emerged across 104 included studies: (a) the pandemic proved widely disruptive to PK-12 youth; (b) there was a clear connection between the mental health of caregivers (e.g., parents) and children; (c) the pandemic broadly increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in PK-12 youth; (d) students were particularly affected …

Conversations About Academic Success: Developing Supportive Context For High-Achieving Black Students, Infini Jemison-Ewing, Marlon I. Cummings Jan 2022

Conversations About Academic Success: Developing Supportive Context For High-Achieving Black Students, Infini Jemison-Ewing, Marlon I. Cummings

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The racial academic achievement gap in America’s public schools persists and there is solid research explaining the elements that have led to and support it. Much of this research is deficit-based and highlights the vulnerabilities of those who fall at the bottom of that gap. Not enough research is invested in celebrating, highlighting, or exploring the experiences of the Black students who perform well academically. This article represents research designed to provide a strengths-based, anti-racist view of a marginalized portion of America’s public-school students. The goal of this study was to uncover the common factors that contribute to academic success …

Career and technical education courses, funded by a 2018 re-authorization known as the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, provide an ideal opportunity for the advancement of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers in the United States. The article takes a close look at the conditions and implications of the re-authorized "Perkins V" for the advancement and promotion of career and technical education courses among tribal communities.

The Longitudinal Impact Of Covid-19 On Teacher Well-Being, Diana Janet Zaleski Jan 2022

The Longitudinal Impact Of Covid-19 On Teacher Well-Being, Diana Janet Zaleski

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of this study was to examine the longitudinal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on public-school teachers’ mental well-being. The present study surveyed a total of 4,926 public school teachers from across Illinois in the fall of 2019, 2020, and 2021. The survey measured teachers’ mental well-being using the Warwick-Edinburg Mental Well-Being Scale. The results found that on average, the mental well-being of public-school teachers significantly declined between the fall of 2019 and the fall of 2021. The present study discusses the implications of these findings on school-based mental and behavioral health interventions for teachers.

Effects Of State-Level Funding Systems On Rates Of Students Identified As Other Health Impaired, Brad M. Uhing, Michelle Powers Jan 2022

Effects Of State-Level Funding Systems On Rates Of Students Identified As Other Health Impaired, Brad M. Uhing, Michelle Powers

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Since 1978, the Education for All Handicapped Children’s Act (now IDEA) committed Congress to provide 40 percent of the average per pupil spending to educate children with disabilities. While states have used a variety of special education funding formulas to attempt to meet the needs of children with disabilities, the funding has never approached the 40 percent benchmark, forcing states to creatively supplement federal dollars. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between school funding formulas and identification of students with other health impairment (OHI). The relationship between special education funding formulas and per pupil spending (PPS) …

Components Affecting Volunteer Satisfaction Within The Ladies Professional Golf Association, Jacob Hollman Jan 2022

Components Affecting Volunteer Satisfaction Within The Ladies Professional Golf Association, Jacob Hollman

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Sport events are increasingly reliant on volunteers for the successful delivery of an event (Pauline, 2011). As the sport industry continues to grow so has the demands for volunteer operations. One must understand the points of satisfaction for volunteers as well as factors influencing their future intentions to volunteer. There has been substantial research on spectator satisfaction and motivation, but antecedents of volunteer satisfaction as well as intent to remain has been limited. Spectator satisfaction is described as, “expectations and perceptions about a service experience” (McDonald et al., 2018, p. 156). Spectator or fan satisfaction has been associated with numerous …
