Fostering Reading: Supporting Foster Children Through Virtual Learning, Evette Harrell, Leah Washburn-Moses Jan 2023

Fostering Reading: Supporting Foster Children Through Virtual Learning, Evette Harrell, Leah Washburn-Moses

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Professional literature presents evidence that foster care agencies, foster parents, and educators are unprepared to meet the distinctive educational needs of foster youth. Although there is a general lack of evidence on specific interventions developed for foster youth, some studies have addressed the impact of tutoring. This paper studies the impact of a pilot program that paired 15 teacher candidates with 15 foster youth for virtual reading tutoring as part of a college course. Data were collected from youth, parents, and teacher candidates through surveys and focus groups. The results of this study suggested that the tutoring relationship produced several …

Household Food Insecurity And Student Behavior: The Impact Of One School's Second Breakfast Program, Bradley S. Witzel, Elizabeth Wall-Bassett Jan 2023

Household Food Insecurity And Student Behavior: The Impact Of One School's Second Breakfast Program, Bradley S. Witzel, Elizabeth Wall-Bassett

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Household Food Insecurity (HFI) is a frequent challenge for children living in poverty that impacts social, emotional, and behavioral development. Federally assisted meal programs, such as the National School Breakfast Program, address HFI for students living in poverty through free or reduced-price breakfast. However, there are challenges for students to take advantage of this opportunity, and it is underutilized. In this research, all middle school students at a high poverty school were offered a free of charge meal alternative called Second Chance Breakfast. Since this program was started, student participation in school breakfast increased and behavior incidences in school dropped …

Unplanned Costs And Benefits: Gender And Spousal Spillover Effects Of Retirement On Health, Lauren Newmyer, Kendal L. Lowrey, Yuliana Levchenko Jan 2023

Unplanned Costs And Benefits: Gender And Spousal Spillover Effects Of Retirement On Health, Lauren Newmyer, Kendal L. Lowrey, Yuliana Levchenko

Sociology Faculty Publications

Objective: Our study assesses how women and men's health indicators are shaped by their spouse's retirement. Background: The retirement process can reshape the health of a retiree, but these effects can also extend onto the health of spouses. Although past research has largely focused on how men's retirement might negatively shape their wife's health outcomes, it is possible that wives' retirement has detrimental effects on their husband's health as well.

Method: Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), we employ a fuzzy regression discontinuity design to identify the causal effects of spousal retirement on indicators of physical and …

The Tactical Versus Technical Paradigm: Scholarship On Teaching Games With A ‘Catch-22’, Adrian P. Turner Jan 2023

The Tactical Versus Technical Paradigm: Scholarship On Teaching Games With A ‘Catch-22’, Adrian P. Turner

School of Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure Studies Faculty Publications

This chapter examines specific game-based and technique approaches that constituted the foci for experimental research attempting to test hypotheses concerning cause-and-effect relationships. Games teaching approaches, e.g., Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) and technique instruction, were manipulated and measured on criteria that included skill assessments, declarative and procedural knowledge, and game performance components. Research also contrasted off-the-ball offensive and defensive player movements. This method of experimental inquiry necessitated a meticulous approach; it required investigators to restrict threats to the internal validity of the research while simultaneously trying to protect the ecological validity. This scenario represented a “Catch-22” for sport pedagogy scholars …

Improving Workplace Judgments By Reducing Noise: Lessons Learned From A Century Of Selection Research, Scott Highhouse, Margaret E. Brooks Jan 2023

Improving Workplace Judgments By Reducing Noise: Lessons Learned From A Century Of Selection Research, Scott Highhouse, Margaret E. Brooks

Management Faculty Publications

Some assert that noise (i.e., unwanted variance) is the most neglected yet most important source of error in judgment. We suggest that this problem was discovered nearly 100 years ago in the area of personnel selection and that a century of selection research has shown that noise can be demonstrably reduced by structuring the process (i.e., decomposing the component parts, agreeing on standards, and applying those standards consistently) and by aggregating judgments independently. Algorithms can aid significantly in this process but are often confused with methods that, in their current form, can substantially increase noise in judgment (e.g., artificial intelligence …

Dolor Y Angustia: Creative Practice And Arts-Based Advocacy And Activism, María G. López Davila

International ResearchScape Journal

This practice to press article discusses how arts-based advocacy and activism can be used to raise awareness about human rights violations. Inspired by the work of my mother, Dr. Morella Davilla, a physician of obstetrics and gynecology in Venezuela, and the arts-based activist work of London-based artist, Aida Silvestri, my arts-based advocacy and activism work, Dolor y Angustia [Pain and Anguish], illustrates the creative process of a visual representation of Female Genital Mutilation, one of the most oppressive and horrific acts enforced upon women and girls.

A Psychological Skills Handbook For Competitive Anxiety In Gymnasts, Kayla Bates Jan 2023

A Psychological Skills Handbook For Competitive Anxiety In Gymnasts, Kayla Bates

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

The relationship between competitive anxiety and performance has been explained by many authors and researchers. Competitive anxiety can have either a negative or positive effect on performance depending on the athlete’s interpretation of their symptoms. Specifically, the Cusp Catastrophe Model aimed to explain the relationship between physiological arousal and cognitive anxiety, and how these two factors affect performance. Psychological skills training may be used to help train the mind of athletes to decrease competitive anxiety levels and/or reinterpret anxiety symptoms to enhance performance. Gymnastics is a high-skill sport that puts a great amount of stress on the mind and body …

The Unexpected Opponent: A Psychological Skills Workbook For Injured Athletes, Lili Berg Jan 2023

The Unexpected Opponent: A Psychological Skills Workbook For Injured Athletes, Lili Berg

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Injury can bring a mix of some positive, but mostly negative emotions and thoughts. Documented in several athlete rehabilitation studies, it is common for athletes to question their ability to compete at the same level again, experience anxiety of re-injury, feel frustration, have low self-esteem, and doubt their return to sport all together (Clement et al., 2015; Johnston & Carroll, 1998; Kunnen et al., 2020; Von Rosen et al., 2018). The Integrated Model of Response to Sport Injury and Rehabilitation (Wiese-Bjornstal et al., 1998) describes that mental skills help athletes cope with the diverse responses to sport injury. This model …

Tinder Usage On Bgsu Campus: A Collection Of Interviews, Autumn Zeller Dec 2022

Tinder Usage On Bgsu Campus: A Collection Of Interviews, Autumn Zeller

Honors Projects

The purpose of the study is to explore the mental effects Tinder has on Bowling Green State University students. My project explores in-depth interviews of 8 BGSU students, and their usage of the popular dating app Tinder. Dating apps have become very popular since the creation of Tinder in 2012, and research explores the negative self-esteem effects it can cause. My research found that many people use the app simply because they are bored, and stray away from trying for something serious because of the stereotypes attached to the app. I also found that women tend to become more critical …

This case study will evaluate …

Main Factors Contributing To The High Femicide Rate In Mexico, Mikensi Ehlinger Dec 2022

Main Factors Contributing To The High Femicide Rate In Mexico, Mikensi Ehlinger

Honors Projects

Femicide has become an urgent issue in Mexico. Many young women and girls are murdered or disappear every year. There are three main factors contributing to the high rate of femicide in Mexico. These factors are the ramifications of the cultural practice of machismo, a lack of detailed laws, and negligence by figures in authority. Despite domestic and international demands for action, the government has yet to make effective change.

Shakespeare And The Supreme Court: How The Justices Reveal Their Ideologies By Referencing His Works, Rachel Anderson Dec 2022

Shakespeare And The Supreme Court: How The Justices Reveal Their Ideologies By Referencing His Works, Rachel Anderson

Honors Projects

The works of William Shakespeare have been referenced many times throughout history, even by Supreme Court justices. Building off of an observation of a mock trial by James Shapiro, this project puts the utilization of Shakespeare from three Court opinions in relation to its context within the play and the opinion to examine what the reference reveals about the authoring justices' ideology. In doing so, this project concludes that the justices utilize Shakespeare's works in their opinions for various reasons, including to infuse their beliefs into their argument. This implies that Supreme Court justices do not base their opinions on …

The Symbolic Politics Of Same-Sex Marriage Legalization, Kaden Sinning Dec 2022

The Symbolic Politics Of Same-Sex Marriage Legalization, Kaden Sinning

Honors Projects

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, many commentators highlighted increasing resistance to the ruling. Some observed typical public backlash, but others noted targeted LGBTQ rights bills from state legislators. While much of the scholarly literature suggests that public backlash is short-lived and tends to resolve toward Supreme Court doctrine, less clear is the impact of state legislative efforts following judicial decisions. To help clarify this discrepancy, this research examines the effect of Obergefell on state bill proposals. I argue that Obergefell acts as a trigger for state legislators to …

Deaf Accessibility In The Christian Church, Madison Finley Dec 2022

Deaf Accessibility In The Christian Church, Madison Finley

Honors Projects

Around the globe, only two percent of Deaf people have had the opportunity to be introduced to the Gospel. Religious accessibility is limited for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. This paper begins to investigate:

  • How can Christian churches increase accessibility to religion, worship, and other programs for Deaf individuals?

My Honors Project activity is preparing research and materials for a physical guide booklet for Christian churches that do not currently offer any Deaf ministries or American Sign Language interpretation or that may be seeking to increase accessibility for Deaf individuals. The primary purpose of this project is to create …
