Refinement Of The Solution Structure Of A Branched Dna Three-Way Junction, Neocles B. Leontis, Igor V. Ouporov
Refinement Of The Solution Structure Of A Branched Dna Three-Way Junction, Neocles B. Leontis, Igor V. Ouporov
Chemistry Faculty Publications
We have refined the structure of the DNA Three-Way Junction complex, TWJ- TC, described in the companion paper by quantitative analysis of two 2D NOESY spectra (mixing times 60 and 200 ms) obtained in D2O solution. NOESY crosspeak intensities extracted from these spectra were used in two kinds of refinement procedure: 1) distance-restrained energy minimization (EM) and molecular dynamics (MD) and 2) full relaxation matrix back calculation refinement. The global geometry of the refined model is very similar to that of a published, preliminary model (Leontis, 1993). Two of the helical arms of the junction are stacked. These are Helix …

From Matron To Maven: A New Role And New Professional Identity For Deans Of Women, 1892 To 1916, Jana Nidiffer
From Matron To Maven: A New Role And New Professional Identity For Deans Of Women, 1892 To 1916, Jana Nidiffer
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Presidents of mid-nineteenth century coeducational colleges hired dormitory matrons as chaperones or disciplinarians. This arrangement was replaced by a new type of woman administrator-dean of women. The deans were highly trained, ambitious women not content with such a limited role. The careers and strategies of four women who were instrumental in transforming the position of dean of women into a profession are examined. This small cadre of women, working in midwestern institutions, developed an expansive vision for their position: Marion Talbot, University of Chicago, 1892 to 1925; Mary Bidwell Breed, Indiana University, 1901 to 1906; Ada Louise Comstock, University of …
The Children Of The Dream: Postwar Planning For The First Camp Of The Children's International Summer Villages Organization, James L. Green
The Children Of The Dream: Postwar Planning For The First Camp Of The Children's International Summer Villages Organization, James L. Green
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Established in the Midwest in the late 1940's by Dr. Doris Allen of the University of Cincinnati, Children's International Summer Villages (CISV) is a worldwide youth organization dedicated to peace and better global understanding. This article focuses on its creation and the ideas behind CISV, plus it documents the organizational work undertaken to open the first international children's summer camp in suburban Cincinnati, Ohio in 1951. Although multiculturalism is a contemporary expression, it can be seen historically that CISV represents a precursor to our current efforts in multicultural education.
Philosophical Bases Of An Employee Services Theory, David L. Groves, Derrick Manns
Philosophical Bases Of An Employee Services Theory, David L. Groves, Derrick Manns
Visions in Leisure and Business
Management theory was examined to isolate the how and where employee services is positioned on a management continuum. The most relevant theory for this study was Mouton and Blake. Management in this context is based upon a continuum of organizational and individual components. The important elements on the organization end of the continuum the important components are: control, pressure and process. On the individual end of the continuum are the: incentives, buying in and caring. The employee service theory is one of cooperation and the exchange of money, power, and risk.

Resolving Travel And Tourism Disputes Through The Use Of Alternative Dispute Resolution Processes, Ann R. Shulman
Resolving Travel And Tourism Disputes Through The Use Of Alternative Dispute Resolution Processes, Ann R. Shulman
Visions in Leisure and Business
Although travel and tourism is one of the world's leading industries, it lags behind many other industries in both its understanding and use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods. Within the travel and tourism industry, inefficient management of internal and external disputes costs millions of dollars and working hours each year. The efficient functioning of this vast network is jeopardized by disputes that rupture vital relationships within the travel and tourism industry and damage the industry's all-important public image.
The aim of this article is to illustrate how the use of ADR processes can save time, reduce costs and strengthen …

Visions in Leisure and Business
An employee service program benefits not only the employee but also the employer. The organization can offer employees wellness programs, child care or special prices to events and trips. In turn, employees feel a part of the company and know that they and their families matter to the company. By providing these services employees work harder and possibly longer because they feel that they belong. Without the basic support of the company, workers tend to fall back on their jobs. At American Greetings, the employees and are made the families their number one priority.

Strategic Planning For Recreation Administrators In Private Sector Recreation Organizations, George Karlis
Strategic Planning For Recreation Administrators In Private Sector Recreation Organizations, George Karlis
Visions in Leisure and Business
The purpose of this study is to describe strategic planning and its implications for administration in private sector recreation organizations. This study consists of three parts. The first part presents the ideology of strategic planning. The second part describes the strategic planning process. Whereas, the third part discusses the strategic planning process for application by recreation administrators in private sector recreation organizations. Factors In The Formation And Development Of Professional Sports Leagues, Jack O. Gaylord Jr.
Visions in Leisure and Business
The purpose of the study was to develop a framework to isolate the important factors in the formation and development of a professional sports league. The method of data collection for this qualitative study was a modified Delphi technique, which included a panel of eighteen individuals who possess expertise in the area of sport. There are three major sections of findings in this study: 1) the focus of the individual and organization; 2) the formation of subcategories; and 3) the defining operational aspects of a league in the isolation of a framework for the formation and development process, as well …

Relationships Between Crime And Tourism, Kevin Moore, Tracy Berno
Visions in Leisure and Business
This paper presents a general overview of the relationships between crime and tourism. Literature on crime and tourism is reviewed and elaborated to indicate the unexplored complexity of the relationships that exist to identify areas of potential research. Difficulties in defining crime are noted and the importance of appreciating the context of tourism in any understanding of tourist area crime is emphasized. Topics discussed include tourists as victims of crime, reducing crime against tourists and crime as an attraction. The great potential and need for future research in the area is highlighted. The paper concludes by introducing the remaining articles …

Hedonists, Ladies And Larrikins: Crime, Prostitution And The 1987 America's Cup, Colin Michael Hall, John Selwood, Elaine Mckewon
Visions in Leisure and Business
This article examines crime and prostitution within the context of the hosting of a hallmark tourist event--the 1987 America's Cup Defence in Fremantle, Western Australia. Although there are substantial difficulties in undertaking research on prostitution, the authors observe there was a substantial increase in prostitution in the Perth metropolitan area during the Cup defence. Similarly, official police statistics indicate that criminal activity was also affected by the hosting of the Cup. However, evidence also suggests that the Cup may have contributed to a more permanent impact on social mores and the expression of anti-social behaviour in Perth and Fremantle.
Federal Aid, Black Separatism, And The Public Schools, Joseph Watras
Federal Aid, Black Separatism, And The Public Schools, Joseph Watras
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
In 1967, President Johnson announced the creation of the Model Cities program to give special grants to cities that developed comprehensive plans enlisting federal, state, local, and private resources to transform blighted areas into useful ones. Dayton, Ohio was among the first cities to have such a program, and it was directed by African American residents from the section known as the inner west. While these community activists instituted important reforms within the schools and the neighborhoods where low income African American families lived, they frustrated efforts to racially desegregate the public schools. Consequently, the story of Dayton s Model …
