Fp-24-17 Older Adults Living With An Adult Roommate Or Sibling, 2022, Jaden Loo, Krista K. Westrick-Payne Jan 2024

Fp-24-17 Older Adults Living With An Adult Roommate Or Sibling, 2022, Jaden Loo, Krista K. Westrick-Payne

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

Since the mid-1960s, the living arrangements of older adults (those aged 50 and above) have shifted significantly. Today, most older adults either live alone, with a spouse, or with a partner (Ausubel, 2020; Vespa, 2017). Although the proportion of older adults living with a spouse remains stable (Vespa, 2017), a declining share of older adults lives alone (Stepler, 2020) and an increasing share are in multigenerational households (Washington, Gryn, Anderson, & Kreider, 2023). However, less is known about other living arrangements, such as living with roommates (home sharing) or siblings. Previous research by the NCFMR revealed an increase in the …

Fp-24-20 Grandparents’ Characteristics By Age, 2022, Krista K. Westrick-Payne

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

The average age of grandparents in the U.S. in 2022 was 68 years. Grandparenthood is more common among older adults (aged 65 and older) than those in midlife (aged 40-64). In 2022, the percentage of older adults who were grandparents (67%) was more than 2.5 times greater than the percentage among those in midlife (24%). Data from the 2023 panel of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) are used to update Wu, 2018 & Westrick-Payne, 2023 comparing midlife grandparents to those at older ages across demographic characteristics in 2022. The SIPP is a nationally representative household-based survey that …

Fp-24-12 Marriage Duration At Time Of Gray Divorce, Krista K. Westrick-Payne, Susan L. Brown

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

Divorce increasingly occurs among adults aged 50 and older, an event termed gray divorce (Brown & Lin, 2012). From 1990 to 2010, the rate of gray divorce doubled, a trend that belied a modest decline in the overall divorce rate during this same period. More recently, the gray divorce rate has largely stagnated, and even declined slightly for adults aged 50-64, signaling that gray divorce is largely a Baby Boomer phenomenon (Brown, Lin, & Julian, 2024). The rapid acceleration in gray divorce coupled with the aging of the married population means that a growing share of divorces in the U.S. …

Fp-24-18 Grandchildren Living In Grandparent-Headed Households, 2022, Jaden Loo Jan 2024

Fp-24-18 Grandchildren Living In Grandparent-Headed Households, 2022, Jaden Loo

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

In recent decades, a growing share of children reside in grandparent-headed households (Wu, 2018). This Family Profile uses data from the child’s perspective in the American Community Survey to chart grandchildren living in grandparent- headed households since 2008. Here, we focus on differentiating between multigenerational grandparent-headed households (parent present) and skipped-generation grandparent-headed households (no parent present). We then describe variation in these grandparent-headed households by minor children’s age, household economic disadvantage, and race/ethnicity. This profile is an update of FP-18-01 & FP-21-07 and the first in our updated series on grandparenthood.

Fp-24-19 Grandparenthood In The U.S.: Residence Status Of Grandchildren, Krista K. Westrick-Payne

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

In 2022, there were more than 64 million grandparents aged 40 and older in the United States, according to the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP, 2023). This figure represents 40% of adults aged 40 and older. The SIPP is a nationally representative household-based survey and is designed to provide comprehensive family and social information on individuals and families. Because the SIPP gathers information on all individuals who lived in a surveyed household, and directly asks respondents if they are a grandparent, it is one of the few surveys that identifies both non-resident and resident grandparents. Using data from …

Fp-24-09 Age Variation In The Remarriage Rate, 1990 & 2022, Jaden Loo Jan 2024

Fp-24-09 Age Variation In The Remarriage Rate, 1990 & 2022, Jaden Loo

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

Nearly one-quarter (23%) of all adults who married in 2022 entered a remarriage. In recent decades, the remarriage rate has plummeted, falling from 50 per 1,000 previously married adults (individuals divorced or widowed) in 1990 to 24.1 per 1,000 by 2022. However, there is substantial variation in the remarriage rate by age group. In this Family Profile, we examine age-related change in the remarriage rate from 1990 to 2022 using 1990 U.S. Vital Statistics and the 2022 American Community Survey data. This profile is an update to FP-13-17, FP-17-21, & FP-20-13.

Fp-24-10 Marriage: More Than A Century Of Change, 1900-2022, Jaden Loo

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

Despite the substantial decline in the U.S. marriage rate in recent decades, there is significant variation in the pace and magnitude of this decline across demographic groups. This Family Profile charts the marriage patterns of women aged 15 and older since 1900 using data from the National Vital Statistics, Decennial Censuses, and the American Community Survey. It also explores marital status variation by race/ethnicity and educational attainment. This profile is an update of FP-20-21, FP-18-17, and FP-13-13.

Fp-24-16 Young Adults Living Alone, With Siblings, Or With Roommates, 2022, Krista K. Westrick-Payne

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

In the United States, moving out of the parental home to establish an independent household is a key milestone in the transition to adulthood. However, today's young adults are less likely to be married or have children compared to those in the early 1990s (Minkin, Parker, Horowitz, & Aragão, 2024). Consequently, the past decade has seen a continued rise in the number of young adults living with their parents (Loo, 2024) alongside an increase in those who are cohabiting (Manning & Loo, 2024). There has been comparatively less focus on single young adults who live independently, whether alone, with siblings, …

Fp-24-14 Cohabitation In Middle And Later Life, 2022, Jaden Loo Jan 2024

Fp-24-14 Cohabitation In Middle And Later Life, 2022, Jaden Loo

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

The popularity of cohabitation for US adults of all ages has continued to grow in recent years. For older men and women (aged 50+) in 2000, the number of cohabitors was about 1.2 million, or 1.6% of adults in that group (Brown, Bulanda, & Lee 2005). As of 2022, this number has almost quadrupled to 4,205,505. We find that among older adults more men (2,216,977) are cohabiting than women (1,988,528). This sex difference is especially pronounced when comparing cohabitation rates (number of cohabitors per 1,000 unmarried and separated). The cohabitation rate is higher among older men at 118.2 than women …

Who Receives Support During Pregnancy? Variation By Intendedness, Lauren Newmyer

Sociology Faculty Publications

Social support makes a vital contribution to health and life outcomes, particularly during the transition to motherhood in young adulthood, an often-challenging experience. Women should have the right not only to bear children but also to raise them in a secure environment, which is often aided by support. This study gives attention to how pregnancy intendedness contributes to pregnant women’s receipt of support. Using novel data from a weekly survey of 18- to 22-year-old women over two and a half years, I investigate how intendedness is associated with the receipt of support and how support types vary throughout pregnancy. This …

Visualizing Multiple Sexual Identity Responses Using A Network Approach, Christopher A. Julian, Lauren Newmyer, Wendy D. Manning, Claire M. Kamp Dush

Sociology Faculty Publications

Measurement strategies for gauging sexual identity within the United States's population-based data infrastructure are evolving. Despite notable advancements, most measurement techniques still do not accurately reflect the nuanced ways in which sexually diverse adults conceptualize their identities. One measurement limitation involves asking participants to choose a single "best" identity. In this visualization, drawing on data from the National Couples' Health and Time Study, the authors illustrate the complexity of sexual identity responses by constructing a network that aggregates the patterns of multiple identities chosen by respondents. The findings underscore that relying on a single-item response risks undercounting the range of …

Fp-24-21 Prevalence Of Grandparenthood In The U.S., 2022, Krista K. Westrick-Payne

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

In 2022, approximately 60.5 million adults aged 50 and older were grandparents, according to the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP, 2023). The SIPP is a nationally representative household-based survey and is designed to provide comprehensive family and social information on individuals and families. The SIPP gathers information on all individuals who live in a surveyed household and directly asks respondents if they are a grandparent. For these reasons, SIPP is one of the few surveys that identifies non-resident grandparents. In this profile, we identify the prevalence of grandparenthood among adults aged 50 and older and examine their demographic …

Fp-24-11 Divorce: More Than A Century Of Change, 1900-2022, Jaden Loo

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

Although the divorce rate in the United States increased throughout much of the twentieth century, it has declined in recent decades. Here we explore the variation in women’s rate of divorce and the proportion of ever-married women separated/divorced from 1900 to 2022 using National Vital Statistics, Decennial Census, and American Community Survey data. We then examine the proportion of currently separated/divorced among ever-married women from 1940 to 2022, disaggregating trends by race/ethnicity and educational attainment. This profile is an update to FP-20-22 and a companion profile to FP-24-10, which details variation in marriage trends over the last century.

Personality And Perceptions About Sport Participation In Collegiate Club Hockey Athletes, Rachel Dembek

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Club sports provide opportunities for college students who may not want to or cannot participate in varsity athletics (Rundio & Buning, 2022). Club sports provide college students with physical and social engagements. These engagements can vary from orchestrating meetings, practices, and dates of competition (Lee, Liu, & Bentley, 2024), in addition to a variety of health benefits. College students get to incorporate their physical talents and interests within a recreational environment without the constraints of the pressures from varsity athletics. Rundio & Buning (2022) states that “in one school year, approximately two million students participated in club sports in the …

The primary influence of RVing and Camping is a desire or reconnection to nature and a simpler life. These desires are caused by a stressful society and the ability to find the means and the platform to achieve and understand oneself through a meaningful lifestyle.
