Handling Immediate Medical Care At Aquatic Facilities: Do We Need Different Levels Of Lifeguard Certification?, Leland Yarger
Handling Immediate Medical Care At Aquatic Facilities: Do We Need Different Levels Of Lifeguard Certification?, Leland Yarger
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The first-responder and professional-rescuer training materials and training programs consider lifeguards to be first responders in emergencies (Aehlert, 2005; American Red Cross, 2001). This article asks readers to consider whether our agency lifeguard-training programs reflect a philosophy that truly view and prepare lifeguards as first responders. If not, I challenge readers to consider whether we should alter our hiring, staffing, and in-service training procedures at aquatic facilities based on the scope and need for providing adequate emergency care at those facilities.

Background: The effects of the non-weight bearing method of aquatic exercise as a modality for weight loss have not been established. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a combined aquatic exercise and walking program compared to walking alone on body weight and selected variables in obese females undergoing a 16-week Standard Behavioral Treatment (SBT) program. Methods: Forty-four obese (BMI 34.9 ± 3.8 kg·m2) sedentary women (age=40.3 years ± 6.8 yrs) were randomly assigned to either an aquatic exercise (AE) group or a traditional walking (W) exercise only group. Both groups were also required to complete …

Lactate Testing Revisited: A Reliable Indicator Of Training Progress For All Swimmers., Stasinos Stavrianeas, Al Stephenson
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
We examined the use of lactate testing to monitor training progress in swimming at a small liberal arts college, using an inexpensive handheld lactate analyzer. The tests were carried out by undergraduates as part of their investigative learning curriculum in exercise science. Twelve female athletes participated in a 2-year program of periodic testing using a 5 × 200 swim of increasing intensity. Blood lactate values were measured from a sample obtained 2-4 min after each swim, plotted against swim time, and the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) was identified. MLSS improved significantly throughout the training period (higher by 0.56 mmol/L …

Security And Today's Aquatic Facility: What Do You Really Know About Your Employees?, Leland Yarger
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
What do you really know about your aquatic-employee candidate? With the security and liability issues facing aquatic facilities today, managers must verify and document current and future employees' backgrounds. Do not guess about your aquatic employees' backgrounds and abilities. This article provides some ideas and procedures for preemployment screening to ascertain the veracity of the qualifications, skills, and backgrounds of potential aquatic employees. These systematic steps should be included in your hiring process as part of an overall risk-management system. You must discuss policies and procedures with your legal or risk-management departments. The policies and procedures discussed in the article …
Certified Operators: Does Certification Provide Significant Results In Real-World Pool & Spa Chemistry?, Kevin Johnston, Michael Kinziger
Certified Operators: Does Certification Provide Significant Results In Real-World Pool & Spa Chemistry?, Kevin Johnston, Michael Kinziger
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study statistically compared operators certified as YMCA pool operator on location (POOL)) with noncertified operators managing YMCA aquatic facilities with respect to water chemistry (pH and Langelier Saturation Index [LSI]) and chlorine levels (free-available and combined-chlorine levels). The study used a convenience sample of 572 pools and spas located at approximately 250 YMCAs. Certification was used as the factor, and the responses included pH, compliance with pH, free chlorine, compliance with free chlorine, combined chlorine, compliance with combined chlorine, LSI, and compliance with LSI. The results indicate that the POOL certification program does provide some significant results related to …
A Comparison Of American Red Cross- And Ymca-Preferred Approach Methods Used To Rescue Near-Drowning Victims, Tomas Alejandro Leclerc
A Comparison Of American Red Cross- And Ymca-Preferred Approach Methods Used To Rescue Near-Drowning Victims, Tomas Alejandro Leclerc
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in time that it will take a rescuer to swim different distances to a near-drowning victim with a rescue tube, using preferred YMCA and American Red Cross approach methods. The skills that were timed included YMCA and Red Cross approach skills with a rescue tube using the modified breaststroke and front crawl strokes. Three different events were timed using the two different approach strokes, for a total of 10 trials. It was assumed that the victim in this study was a passive victim facing away from the rescuer. This positioning …
