New Zealand Beachgoers' Swimming Behaviours, Swimming Abilities, And Perception Of Drowning Risk, Judith P. Mccool, Kevin Moran, Shanthi Ameratunga, Elizabeth Robinson
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Little is known about the water safety beliefs, swimming skills, and behaviors that might be associated with beachgoers' perception of drowning risk. New Zealand adult beachgoers (N = 3,371) were surveyed to assess beach swimming frequency, swimming skill, swimming behaviors and perception of the risk of drowning in five pre-validated scenarios. Thirty-two percent of beachgoers estimated that they could currently swim less than 25 m; 55% reported that they had swum outside lifeguard-patrolled areas, and 26% had swum after consuming alcohol. Young adults and men were more likely to self-report strong swimming skill, more frequent at-risk swimming behavior, and low …
The Issue Of In-Water Rescue Breathing: A Review Of The Literature, Tomas Leclerc, Juan Canabal, Heather Leclerc
The Issue Of In-Water Rescue Breathing: A Review Of The Literature, Tomas Leclerc, Juan Canabal, Heather Leclerc
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this review of literature was, first, to examine whether the existing scientific evidence supports a recommendation for delivering rescue breaths during a swim rescue in the water and second, to examine which lifeguarding agencies are actually training their lifeguards in rescue-breathing procedures to use while performing a swim rescue. Among the North American aquatic-agency programs examined for this review were the American Red Cross, the Young Men’s Christian Association, the United States Lifesaving Association, the Canadian Lifesaving Society, Starfish Aquatics Institute, and Ellis & Associates. The authors conclude that it is evident that strong support exists in …

Prevalence Of Pools And Adequate Pool Fencing In The United States, 2001-2003, Julie Gilchrist, Karin Mack
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The objective of this study was to estimate the proportion of U.S. households with access to a residential swimming pool and the prevalence of adequate pool fencing. Data were collected using national cross-sectional telephone surveys in 1994 and 2001-03. Nearly 15% of households (16.3 million) reported access to a swimming pool at their residence (14.9%; 95% CI 14.1-15.7); only 74% were reported to be adequately fenced. Adequate pool fencing is associated with lower income, renting the residence, and residing in a building with multiple units or an attached house. An estimated 488,633 households with pool access, where the family owns …

International Perspective Of Aquatic Instructors’ Attitudes Toward Teaching Swimming To Children With Disabilities, Phillip Conatser
International Perspective Of Aquatic Instructors’ Attitudes Toward Teaching Swimming To Children With Disabilities, Phillip Conatser
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes of aquatic instructors (N = 23) toward teaching swimming to children with mild and severe disabilities in an inclusive setting. Aquatic instructors from 23 cities in 7 countries participated in the study. Data were collected by mail survey using the Aquatic Instructors Attitudes Toward Teaching Swimming to Individuals With Disabilities questionnaire (Conatser, Block, & Lapore, 2000). A correlated t test showed that aquatic instructors were significantly more favorable toward teaching aquatics to children with mild disabilities than children with severe disabilities. Instructors agreed they should include children with mild disabilities and …

Motivations And Reasons For Exercising In Water: Gender And Age Differences In A Sample Of Spanish Exercisers, Juan Antonio Moreno Murcia, Celestina Martínez Galindo, Pablo Marcos Pardo
Motivations And Reasons For Exercising In Water: Gender And Age Differences In A Sample Of Spanish Exercisers, Juan Antonio Moreno Murcia, Celestina Martínez Galindo, Pablo Marcos Pardo
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purposes of this study were, on the one hand, to relate the reasons for exercising with self-determination and, on the other, to check gender and age differences with a sample of 311 exercisers in water. The data were collected using the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire–2 and Motives for Physical Activities Measure–Revised. A positive and significant correlation was seen between self-determination and the reasons for exercise, with self-determination predicting 22% by enjoyment and 8% by fitness/health reasons. Similarly, the multivariate analysis showed that the women had more self-determination than the men and that they also rated fitness/health, social, enjoyment, …
