Will They Sink Or Swim? New Zealand Youth Water Safety Knowledge And Skills, Kevin Moran May 2008

Will They Sink Or Swim? New Zealand Youth Water Safety Knowledge And Skills, Kevin Moran

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This paper examines the practical and theoretical knowledge of New Zealand youth, identifies gaps in the understanding of water safety by these same youth, and suggests ways of addressing the shortcomings. A questionnaire was completed by 2,202 youth in a nationwide survey, New Zealand Youth Water Safety Survey 2003. Self-reported swimming, rescue, and resuscitation skills and understanding of small-boat safety and surf safety were the competencies chosen to evaluate youth skills and knowledge. Many estimated that they could not swim more than 100 m (n = 1192; 54%) or that they could not perform CPR (n = 939; 43%). When …

Comparison Of The Health Aspects Of Swimming With Other Types Of Physical Activity And Sedentary Lifestyle Habits, Nancy L. Chase, Xuemei Sui, Steven N. Blair

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Swimming, water jogging, and aqua aerobics may provide health benefits to the general population as well as patients with chronic diseases. Research on the health benefits of aquatic exercise in comparison with activities such as running and walking is scarce, however. The goal of this study was to evaluate characteristics of participants in the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study and to compare health habits and physiological characteristics among swimmers, runners, walkers, and sedentary women and men in order to evaluate the health benefits of swimming compared to other types of physical activity. Participants were 10,518 women and 35,185 men ages 20-88 …

Rock-Based Fishers’ Perceptions And Practice Of Water Safety, Kevin Moran May 2008

Rock-Based Fishers’ Perceptions And Practice Of Water Safety, Kevin Moran

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Fishing from rocky shorelines is one of New Zealand’s most dangerous pastimes with 63 fatalities from 1980-1995. Little is known about the characteristics of these fishers, their perceptions, and their water-safety practices. We selected four high-risk rock-based fishing locations on Auckland’s west coast were selected as sites to conduct a survey and safety campaign during the summer months of 2005-06. One third (n = 81; 32%) of fishers estimated that they could swim 25 m or less non-stop. Almost one half (n = 120; 48%) had gone to the water’s edge to retrieve a snagged line or engaged in other …

Injuries In Public Swimming Pools In Victoria: A Pilot Study, Bernadette L. Matthews, Alistair Thom, Richard C. Franklin May 2008

Injuries In Public Swimming Pools In Victoria: A Pilot Study, Bernadette L. Matthews, Alistair Thom, Richard C. Franklin

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Swimming is an integral part of the Australian lifestyle. Studies have examined drowning fatalities in public and residential swimming pools and the potential factors involved, but there is little evidence detailing the extent of injuries that occur in public pools. This paper describes the types of injuries that occur at public pools, the locations within pools where injuries occur, the type of medical treatment required and the rate of injury. Incident reports were collected from 18 public pools across metropolitan and regional Victoria, Australia. Over 6 months, 1,715 injuries were recorded, representing an injury rate of 142.2 per 100,000 pool …

Reliability Of Peak Cardiorespiratory Responses During Aquatic Treadmill Exercise, William M. Silvers, Dennis G. Dolny May 2008

Reliability Of Peak Cardiorespiratory Responses During Aquatic Treadmill Exercise, William M. Silvers, Dennis G. Dolny

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Twenty-four college-age participants took part in 2 protocols on an aquatic treadmill (ATM) submerged to the xiphoid process. ATM speed was increased to 212.2 + 19.2 m/min, and water-jet resistance was increased 10% every minute thereafter. Rest between sessions was at least 6 days. Oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR), minute ventilation (VE), tidal volume (VT), breathing frequency (f), and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) were measured continuously. Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) was recorded immediately after each test, and blood lactate (LA) was measured 3 min after. There were no significant differences for Trial 1 vs. Trial 2 for any …

Putting Expert Testimony In Its Epistemological Place: What Predictions Of Dangerousness In Court Can Teach Us, M. Neil Browne, Ronda R. Harrison-Spoerl May 2008

Putting Expert Testimony In Its Epistemological Place: What Predictions Of Dangerousness In Court Can Teach Us, M. Neil Browne, Ronda R. Harrison-Spoerl

Economics Faculty Publications

Judges and juries must make momentous and intricate decisions. The temptation is overwhelming for the court to request assistance from those who claim to know facts, interpretations, and explanatory models that promise to make those decisions more accurate.1 As long as some of us know more than others about specific probative matters, courts will certainly seek to know what those experts know or, to anticipate, what they claim to know. But how can courts optimize their consumption of this expertise?
