Advertising To Children And The Commercial Speech Doctrine: Political And Constitutional Limitations, M. Neil Browne, Lauren Frances Biksacky, Alex Frondorf Jan 2009

Advertising To Children And The Commercial Speech Doctrine: Political And Constitutional Limitations, M. Neil Browne, Lauren Frances Biksacky, Alex Frondorf

Economics Faculty Publications

For the past forty years, efforts to limit or prohibit advertising to children have faced a powerful combination of political and constitutional limitations. The political will and pressure have not been exerted to enact and enforce meaningful regulations that curtail, in all media, the proliferation of advertising directed at children. Such advertising exploits the very market failures that governments around the world, including our own, seek to minimize. Yet even when restrictions on advertising are enacted, they are inevitably met with constitutional challenges. These two limitations - political and constitutional - rest, however, on faulty assumptions about human behavior in …

Water Availability Directly Determines Per Capita Consumption At Two Trophic Levels, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo Jan 2009

Water Availability Directly Determines Per Capita Consumption At Two Trophic Levels, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Community ecology has long focused on energy and nutrients as currencies of species interactions. Evidence from physiological ecology and recent studies suggest that in terrestrial systems, water may influence animal behavior and global patterns of species richness. Despite these observations, water has received little attention as a currency directly influencing animal species interactions. Here, we show that the per capita interaction strength between predatory wolf spiders and their primary prey, field crickets, is strong (0.266) when predators and prey are maintained in ambient dry conditions, but is near zero (0.001) when water is provided ad libitum. Moreover, crickets consume 31-fold …

The Impact Of Target Weight And Gender On Perceptions Of Likeability, Personality Attributes, And Functional Impairment, Dara Musher-Eizenman, Robert Albert Carels Jan 2009

The Impact Of Target Weight And Gender On Perceptions Of Likeability, Personality Attributes, And Functional Impairment, Dara Musher-Eizenman, Robert Albert Carels

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: Bias against individuals who are overweight is well documented. However, little is known about biased perceptions of men and women at varying specified degrees of overweight. Methods: Men and women (N = 308) rated male and female figures (low normal weight, overweight, obese, extremely obese) on measures of dislike, personality characteristics, and functional limitations. Results: Little or no bias was observed against overweight figures (BMI approximately 25 kg/m 2); however, strong bias was observed against obese and extremely obese figures. Men's ratings of extremely obese females were more negative than those of comparable males. However, for other weight categories, …

Applied Use Of A Health Communications Model To Generate Interest In Learning, Jennifer Rebecca Banas Jan 2009

Applied Use Of A Health Communications Model To Generate Interest In Learning, Jennifer Rebecca Banas

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Educators are regularly challenged to design instruction that motivates learners. If interest is lacking, the challenge can be even greater. Tailoring is a message design technique that could help to stimulate interest and consequently, motivation to learn. Effective tailoring requires the formal assessment of learner characteristics and the integration of those characteristics into a given message. Knowing which elements to tailor, however, should not be left to guesswork. This article describes how a health communications framework guided the design and development of three tailored lesson introductions. A step-by-step description of the framework, how it was used, and the resulting product …
