Who Drowns? Encoding The Second Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn
Who Drowns? Encoding The Second Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The aim of the current study was to identify the casualty characteristics that contribute to drowning according to the 4W model (Avramidis, Butterly & Llewellyn, 2007, 2009). Qualitative content analysis was utilized to analyze drowning incident videos (n = 41), and semistructured interviews of those involved in drowning incidents (n = 34). Results confirm that human activity in, on, and around an aquatic environment can lead to drowning, regardless of the casualty’s type, gender, age, ethnicity, and area of residence. Males far outnumber females as drowning victims. Younger persons were more likely to drown than were adults. Due to socioeconomic …
Are University Swimming Pools Safe? A Model To Predict The Number Of Injuries In Pennsylvania University Swimming Pools, Richard Hsiao, Robert Kostelnik
Are University Swimming Pools Safe? A Model To Predict The Number Of Injuries In Pennsylvania University Swimming Pools, Richard Hsiao, Robert Kostelnik
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Aquatic facilities can end up paying a large amount of compensation as a result of a charge of negligence. There are two main purposes of this study. The first was to use survey methodology to identify the number of injuries that occur in the swimming pools at Pennsylvania state universities and, as a result, to develop a model to predict the number of injuries that may occur in a university swimming pool. Second, the researchers wanted to gain insight from a sample of aquatic directors into the concerns they have managing their aquatic facilities. Multiple linear regression and ANOVA statistics, …

Home Swimming Pool Design To Improve Diving Safety, Jennifer D. Blitvich, G. Keith Mcelroy, Brian A. Blanksby
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study sought to establish home swimming pool design guidelines to minimize risk of diving injury. Using a qualitative design, interviews with representatives of home pool companies were analyzed and common themes were determined. Pool company display centers and advertising materials were also examined. The typical in-ground fiberglass home pool was described by manufacturers as 8m in length, with a constant gradient of 0.9m to 1.8–2.0m deep. Comparisons between this profile and the underwater pathways of young adults in previous studies by the authors showed that, if the dives had been performed in this typical pool, impact would have occurred …

Long-Term Effects Of Parents' Education On Children's Educational And Occupational Success Mediation By Family Interactions, Child Aggression, And Teenage Aspirations, Eric F. Dubow, Paul Boxer, L. Rowell Husemann
Psychology Faculty Publications
We examine the prediction of individuals' educational and occupational success at age 48 from contextual and personal variables assessed during their middle childhood and late adolescence. We focus particularly on the predictive role of the parents' educational level during middle childhood, controlling for other indices of socioeconomic status and children's IQ, and the mediating roles of negative family interactions, childhood behavior, and late adolescent aspirations. Data come from the Columbia County Longitudinal Study, which began in 1960 when all 856 third graders in a semirural county in New York State were interviewed along with their parents; participants were reinterviewed at …

Parents, Pals, Or Pedagogues? How Youth Learn About Water Safety, Kevin Moran
Parents, Pals, Or Pedagogues? How Youth Learn About Water Safety, Kevin Moran
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
While investment in water safety education appears sound, little is known about how youth construct their understanding of water safety principles and what formative influences impact on their beliefs and practices. Year 11 students (n = 2,202) from 41 high schools took part in a nationwide survey on youth water safety knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The self-completion written questionnaire was undertaken in school time in the second term of 2003. Data were analyzed using a range of sociodemographic variables, including gender, socioeconomic status and ethnicity. The formative influence of peers, family, and schooling on the water safety of youth who …

Comparison Of Energy Expenditure Between Continuous And Interval Water Aerobic Routines, Luiz Fernando Martins Kruel, Moara Simões Posser, Cristine Lima Alberton, Stéphanie Santana Pinto, Alessandra Da Silva Oliveira
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The aim of present study was to analyze the oxygen uptake, the heart rate, and the energetic expenditure of women in two water aerobics routines: continuous and interval. The sample comprised ten voluntary active women who performed two water aerobics routines with a minimal interval of 48 hours and randomized order. Each routine was performed with the same exercises and duration, along 32 minutes. The intensity was controlled through Borg’s rate of perceived exertion (RPE), adopting RPE 13 for continuous routine and RPE 17 and RPE 9 for interval routines. It was utilized the paired t test, with the level …
