Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Students Coming Out At The Intersection Of Spirituality And Sexual Identity, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart, Shaunna Payne Gold
Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Students Coming Out At The Intersection Of Spirituality And Sexual Identity, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart, Shaunna Payne Gold
Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications
In this study, the researchers examined how lesbian, gay, and bisexual undergraduate students negotiated and defined their spiritual identities during the coming-out process. Although there were varied responses, the findings suggest that students describe spirituality as acceptance, personal relationships with a powerful essence, and connections to nature. When navigating multiple identities, students experienced various levels of intersectionality including irreconciliation, progressive development, arrested development, completed development, and reconciliation.

Religion, Forced Migration And Schooling: Varying Influences Of Religious Capital Among Iraqi Christian Refugee Students In Jordan And The Usa, Bruce A. Collet
School of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications
This study is based on focus groups conducted with Christian Iraqi refugee secondary school students in the metropolitan Detroit area, and interviews with staff from volunteer aide agencies, non-governmental organizations, churches, and independent researchers in both Amman, Jordan as well as the Detroit metropolitan area. The article examines varying influences of religious capital among Iraqi Christian students. Examination of the operation of this capital within the context of the two countries’ economic and foreign policy interests including their refugee policies exposes macro-level forces that render religious capital to function in countervailing manners. Iraqi Christian students in both Amman and Detroit …

Fertility Following An Unintended First Birth, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford
Fertility Following An Unintended First Birth, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford
Sociology Faculty Publications
Research on unintended fertility tends to focus on births as isolated events. This article expands previous research by examining the relationship between early unintended childbearing and subsequent fertility dynamics in the United States. Data from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth show that 27.5% of mothers report an unintended first birth. We use event history methods to show that these women are significantly more likely than women with an intended first birth to have an unintended second birth than to either have no second birth or an intended second birth, net of sociodemographic characteristics. An unintended first birth also …

This paper concerns the development of water-compatible fluorescent imaging probes with tunable photonic properties that can be excited at a single wavelength. Bichromophoric cassettes 1a-1c consisting of a BODIPY donor and a cyanine acceptor were prepared using a simple synthetic route, and their photophysical properties were investigated. Upon excitation of the BODIPY moiety at 488 nm the excitation energy is transferred through an acetylene bridge to the cyanine dye acceptor, which emits light at approximately 600, 700, and 800 nm, i.e., with remarkable dispersions. This effect is facilitated by efficient energy transfer that gives a "quasi-Stokes" shift between 86 and …
Evolution Of Small Putative Group I Introns In The Ssu Rrna Gene Locus Of Phialophora Species, Scott O. Rogers
Evolution Of Small Putative Group I Introns In The Ssu Rrna Gene Locus Of Phialophora Species, Scott O. Rogers
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Group I introns (specifically subgroup IC1) are common in the nuclear ribosomal RNA genes of fungi. While most range in length from more than 200 to nearly 1800 nucleotides (nt) in length, several small putative (or degenerate) group I introns have been described that are between 56 and 81 nt. Although small, previously we demonstrated that the PaSSU intron in the rRNA small subunit gene of Phialophora americana isolate Wang 1046 is capable of in vitro splicing using a standard group I intron pathway, thus qualifying it as a functional ribozyme. Findings. Here, we describe eight short putative group …
